A friend interested in IU just inquired about crean's judgement in hiring assistants. He was referring to the Univeristy of Toledo HC who was just fired, I think after 10 years and one NIT appearance, and then hired by crean. The IU observer was very unimpressed and surprised. No surprise to me. I never thought crean tolerated guy's who would disagree with him.
On Joplin firing:
"O'Brien said an unresolved point-shaving investigation started last spring by the FBI was not a factor in the dismissal."
What! What! What!????
The F.B.-freaking- I.???
Preterition is no way to clear one's name.
Is this a true hire or just speculation?
My kneejerk reaction: Yikes!
Yeah, you'd think with all the controversey swirling around the IU program they wouldn't want anyone with even a hint of dirt to their name.
Then, why hire a HC (TC) who is a close personal friend of Sampson's and then bring in a long-time Sampson assistant (Seltzer)...??
That I totally agree with.
As disappointed as I was to see Crean go, I was understanding that he went to a school like IU. BUT....I'm shocked that IU wanted him considering his close friendship and ties to Sampson.
I agree with Niv about Sampson and Crean's relationship and I thought we were safe because of that. The problem is that Crean and MU had a such a great graduation rate and no problems. The resume was more important than his relationship with Sampson.
