Title: Decision Criteria for a new Coach
Post by: Henry Sugar on April 09, 2008, 09:19:13 AM
Looking to conduct some (very rough) research if people are interested.  Given the following six criteria, how would you weight your decision?

Please assign a percentage for each category, and the total should add up to 100%.  I'd like to see where opinions end up.

  • Recruiting ability - 35%
  • Marquette Organizational Fit - 15%
  • Potential Impact on Roster - 10%
  • Integrity / Leadership / Charisma - 10%
  • Player Development - 10%

I'll go first

Potential Impact on Roster - 10%
Integrity / Leadership / Charisma - 20%
Player Development - 10%

I graded Integrity / Leadership / Charisma as marketer too.  Have to admit without Crean "selling" the MU program we'd not only ACT like a mid-major (thanks Cottingham!), we would LOOK, SMELL, TALK, WALK, and APPEAR like a mid-major.

Ability to Coach 25%
Recruiting ability 50%
Marquette Organizational Fit 10%
Potential Impact on Roster 0%
Integrity / Leadership / Charisma *
Player Development 15%

* I think integrity/leadership/charisma are inextricably tied to Recruiting ability and to some extent the ability to coach and motivate players.  so i would assign 75% to coaching, recruiting, leadership.

I guess that if I had to, this is how I would rate these things.  In my mind, there are a couple of things that make this a little tricky.  For the purposes of your question, I'm viewing the Head Coach in a vacuum -- without considering what his staff brings to the table.  In a perfect world, I'd re-rate these things a little bit.  I think recruiting should always be the strongest.  But, with a good staff, I would probably lower the player development and ability a little bit and increase the Integrity/Leadership/Charisma a bit.  Ultimately, I think one of HC's biggest jobs is to build the visibility and reputation of the program.  Love him or hate him, I think this was Crean's biggest strength.

Perhaps not a popular opinion right now, but I honestly think Crean was a very good coach under the way I would typically rate these criteria.  I'd have liked a little boost in Xs and Os and a little boost in development, but I think overall he was great.  I'm really pissed about the way he left, but damn, he was good for the program and I'm afraid most of us (I'm excluding you PRN and 4ever, so no need to respond) are really going to be missing him in 18-24 months.

    * Ability to Coach -- 25%

    * Recruiting ability -- 25%

    * Marquette Organizational Fit -- 10% (it's a private, Jesuit school. The coach has to embrace some of the philosophies in order to make it work... he doesn't need to be a priest... but he needs to understand what a Jesuit school stands for)

    * Potential Impact on Roster -- 5% (I'm inclined to rate this even higher because a 3 year lull followed by success again would be great, but realistically MU needs to keep the momentum going. Winning NOW is important)

    * Integrity / Leadership / Charisma -- 20% (I would say these factors heavily influence recruiting ability)

    * Player Development -- 15%

Ability to GAME Coach - 20%
Recruiting ability - 55%
Marquette Organizational Fit - 0%
Potential Impact on Roster -5%
Integrity / Leadership / Charisma - 5%
Player Development - 15%

I think recruiting and intergrity/leadership/charisma are too intertwined to separate.
