Question:
If Buzz had never been HC at UNO (i.e., he stayed with Gillespie until he went to UK, then came to Marquette as Crean's top recruiter) would you feel better about this hire?
Option 1: Yes

Option 2: No

I'm just curious about this. Many people seem to agree that we would have liked (and expected) an emerging HC (Bennett, Miller) or a top assistant (Groce). What if Buzz's most recent pre-Marquette experience had been as a top assistant at a Big 12 school that had just completed a very dramatic turn around? Would that make him look a little better? Does the stop-over at UNO (and the sub-.500 record there) tarnish him?
For helping Gillespite achieve what?
He would never have been considered.
Hey - you stole my question! :)

I guess I have to answer it "no" because I've basically been throwing out the UNO job from his resume anyway - and just looking at him as an up-and-coming assistant coach.

Why are you so down on Gillespie? One of my best friends hired him to be the head coach at UTEP...the guy can coach. A&M is a dog basketball program for decades but he managed to get them going where few thought it was possible. Anyone that can recruit to A&M is doing ok and I'd say Gillespie did quite a bit in his two Texas stops (UTEP and A&M).
That said, I don't think Buzz would have been considered more due to geography then anything else.
I would have felt better without UNO, but honestly, I don't think too many coaches could have turned that program into a .500+ squad.
I'm not down on Gillespie. I'm not down on Williams.
I'm down on the fact that we hired a guy with NO BUSINESS BEING A HIGH MAJOR BASKETBALL COACH!!!
Learning on the job? What the hell is going on? People on this board like to make fun of Jerry Wainwright. He looks like John Wooden compared to the guy we got.

Sigh ...
Texas A&M pre-Gillispie: 7-21, 0-16 in the Big 12
Gillispie's first year: 21-10, NIT quarters
Second year: 22-9, NCAA second round
Third year: 27-7, Sweet Sixteen
Move along. Nothing to see here.
