You hated Crean and now he is gone. You should be happy.

Now you are already questioning Buzz, and he hasn't even coached a game.

I'm starting to think that you didn't hate Crean, you just like having something to bitch about.

Crean won a lot, so you attacked his character.

Buzz hasn't coached a game, so you attack his resume.

I didn't attack his resume, I just posted it. But thanks.

I attacked Crean's character because he was a horse's ass, as nearly everybody who ever encountered him has since admitted.

Hold on, I don't want to get in an argument about Crean. I want to be clear about that.

I'm simply pointing out that he did win a lot of games... so it was hard to call for him to be fired for his performance.

However, calling him a terrible person allowed you to bitch forever about him. (maybe you were right, but that's not the point).

NOW Buzz hasn't even coached a game, so you can't criticize his performance.

But, you can criticize his resume.

AND, for the record, posting a person's resume with the line: "Seriously, what the hell is going on here?" is attacking him.

Crean
- Won games
- PRN attacks character

Buzz
- Hasn't even coached a game
- PRN attacks his resume

Come on man. How bitter are you?

Amen, brother!  Let's allow the guy to do something and evaluate that before we criticize him for........... being hired.

More power to him for being hired. It's the hiring parties I question.

This is like Peter Sellers in "Being There."

2002alum - I thought the Crean-bashing was annoying.  Everyone knew he was a douche but as long as we were winning in the BEast I didn't care.

PRN has a legitimate gripe on this one though.

Okay, the resume is weak...so i have a question (and think about this a minute):

Should the expectations for success be particularly high (somebody saw something in him and thus we should all feel Buzz will deliver above expectations) or particularly low (given the resume lacks more than most people would expect a head coach of a top 25 team to have)?
Title: Re: Natural progression
Post by: Ready2Fly on April 08, 2008, 12:53:14 PM
Particularly low.  You can't reasonably expect anyone with that track record to come set the world on fire in the Big East.  It's almost as if everyone forgets how tough it was to go 11-7 in conference this year.  THERE IS NO ROOM FOR ERROR IN THIS CONFERENCE.  The line between relevance and Rutgers is razor thin.

Ah ha.

I understand what you are getting at.

I'm just perplexed.

Rip the former coach because you don't like him. (Can't rip his performance because he wins games)

Rip the future coach because you don't like his background. (Can't rip his performance because he hasn't coached a game yet).

I mean, no matter who coaches MU, certain people are gonna blast him.

THERE IS NO PLEASING SOME FANS... AND I'M STARTING TO REALIZE THAT SOME FANS REALLY LOVE TO HATE THEIR OWN TEAM/PROGRAM.

I agree with you.  I really didn't understand why people ripped Crean all the time when he was CONSISTENTLY WINNING IN THE BEST CONFERENCE IN D1.  That being said, I thought we were a better program than what this hire conveys, and I'm still very underwhelmed.  I hope I'm proven wrong over the next few years.

I don't think Crean was consistently ripped much at all.  A lot of people didn't like him personally or didn't like some coaching decision or other, but I don't remember anyone (or maybe a very, very few) saying anything like he should be gone.

As for the original post, the next entry on that job progression should be Assistant Coach Indiana or Kentucky, or Head Coach, Southern Methodist or Arkansas State, not Head Coach, Marquette University.

But he is our coach now.  I stop complaining from the moment the press conference ends until a) we lose both top 100 recruits or b) the season starts.  For now, go get 'em, Buzz!

Critiquing every coaching decision and his personality are what I would call getting ripped.

Again, I don't think Tom Crean was a saint... but he did a lot of things right and I get frustrated when people find things to rip on him about (although some of the recent heat appears to be deserved).

The same is now happening to Buzz.

We don't know if he can win games... so somebody finds his resume and then rips him for it because we can't rip him for losing (yet).

It's just stupid, guys.

Sports are supposed to be entertaining, fun and somebody to bring people together and take pride in.

If you can't enjoy it (even a little), then I feel bad for ya.

PRN - go find a new team to hate...

Anyone who reads this board knows i'm not quick to defend PRN.  But I think it's important to point out that we have a right to attack a hiring decision wihtout being accused of attacking Buzz.  He was a terrible hire in terms that there were better cannidates avaible.  That said, he may and i'm sure PRN and I both hope, that he turns out to be amazing.  But either way it's a stupid hire when looking at bodies of work, which prn is.

To say he's attacking Buzz is to say that people who dissagree with the war are attacking the troops (those kids at berkly excluded).

BTW, PRN i've heard you complaining about the choice a lot.  Does this mean you have a negative outlook on the program's future?  I don't see this making us worse if he can keep our current recruits.  If he's a better recruiter than creen than how much worse of a game coach chould he be?  I think this is a lateral coaching move at worst with a punchers chance at having a lot of upside.

I know what you are saying... but when he continually blasts the previous coach, and then STILL complains about the new hire... it makes it an attack.

Having 50 different posts complaining about Buzz and even claiming that Crean had something to do with it makes it seem like he's setting up for an "I told you so" attack of Buzz when he loses a game.

Again, disagreeing with MU is certainly ok, and I appreciate the variety of opinions... but just bashing the former coach, the new hire and everything else under the sun gets tiring.

Rawdawg - I sincerely hope this guy is the Second Coming, but I really think this is going to turn out badly. We hired a guy without any real qualifications based on what? Because he got 2 questionable recruits into MU? That he coached here for 9 months? That we had discussions with him for 5 days? That he has connections in Texas (we're in Milwaukee and play in the Big East)? That he says "yes sir and no sir?" Why? I'd like to hear why we hired this guy.

I will place a gentleman's bet with the entire board that he won't last more than 4 years here. Unfortunately, that means we have to prepare for a ton of lean years.

I think DiUlio himself couldn't have messed this up any worse

That should tell you what my outlook is.

I bet that PRN used to call into T-Dub overnight on the score and complained too, just cause there are too many hours in a night to go without bitching.
