And Now . . . My only question is this. Can Buzz Williams really out recruit the aforementioned group?
God Help Us.
Let's go Buzz.
Let's go Warriors.
Buzz Williams -
He can't out recruit them in traditional Big East states. However, if he is able to leverage contacts in areas where these schools haven't traditionally scored players (e.g. Texas) he might have a puncher's chance.
Just trying to be "half full" right now.
I'm sure we can expect a steady stream of Texas-based recruits to fly into Mitchell over the next few weeks and months.
Warrior07 - you didn't use the sarcasim color, so I'm not sure if you were being serious or not. My point is simply that if we are trying to pull players out of states like PA, NY, & CT we could be in big trouble, but that if Buzz is able to try and bring people to the Big East from traditionally non-Big East places our disadvantage is minimized.
Its really hard to know what to think. I am not necessarily happy about the decision, nor am I necessarily unhappy about it. I guess I am a bit surprised. I'll listen to what they have to say, and then simply watch over time. This could turn out fine. It could be a disaster.
I like the continuity angle, by all accounts he can recruit, and he obviously got glowing recommendations from guys like Gillespie and Crean. Beyond that, MU obviously had an up close and personal view of him for the past year or so, and likely have a good idea what he is all about. Much the way Bill Cords still talks about how they got to look at Crean when MSU was here for the NCAA tournament. That's good for Buzz, but I hope the familiarity/recency effect didn't inaccuratley make him look better than other potential candidates.
I don't necessarily see a resume that suggests he is qualified for this job, but what really isn't sitting well is the fact that he is 35 and from Texas with no ties to this area, and has spent most of his professional career in Texas. Marquette constitutes his first time in the Midwest. Not that that has to mean anything, but what happens of he does well the next couple years and Rick Barnes or Mark Turgeon or Jeff Capel decide to make a move? Are we right back here again having provided the on the job training for his next job? At his age, is there any reason to believe that if he is succesful we will not go through the same thing we went through with Crean year after year, only this time having to potentially fight the lure of going home as well?
