Right move: Before Ohio State hired Thad Matta as its basketball coach, it was interested in Tom Crean. But Crean remained at Marquette for two reasons -- he wanted a Big Ten program where basketball was king, and he thought his chances of succeeding his former boss, Tom Izzo, at Michigan State were pretty good if Izzo opted for either the NBA or the ESPN studio in the near future.
It's good that Crean landed at Indiana, a basketball-dominant environment, because the suspicion is that Izzo has long favored Dayton coach Brian Gregory to succeed him.
Wow - Izzo must think a lot of the Dayton coach - we were all thinking no way. Interesting if it's true - that he thought Crean should not ne the hier apparent to him.
Who in the heck cares about our old coach at this point. The man is dead to me.
Maybe that's why Izzo was so in favor of Crean going to IU. So he didn't have to deal with the awkwardness of picking Gregory in 5 years. Although, at this rate it will be hard to turn over the MSU job to a coach that can't compete year-in-year-out in the A-10.
