DAYTON — Brian Gregory says he is staying put.
Although he's been linked to the Marquette opening by ESPN and others, the fifth-year University of Dayton coach says he is happy with the job he has and intends to stick around for the long haul.
"I'm at Dayton, I'm committed to Dayton, I'm not going anywhere," he said.
Gregory is attending the Final Four in San Antonio, and said Friday night, April 4, that he hasn't been contacted by Marquette or anyone else.
"I'm committed to Dayton, and they're committed to me and what we're doing," he said. "That (commitment) is the most important thing to me. That's all I've ever wanted because that's the foundation of building a successful program."
Gregory has a 98-60 record at UD with two postseason appearances. He's also scoring some triumphs on the recruiting front, keeping top local talent at home.
Dayton Athletic Director Ted Kissell, who arrived at the Final Four on Friday, always keeps a list of potential coaching candidates, knowing how quickly things can change, but he doesn't believe Gregory is eyeing other jobs.
"Do I think he's committed to the University of Dayton and the task at hand? I absolutely do," Kissell said.
Marquette has been looking for a coach since Tom Crean accepted the Indiana job Tuesday. Wright State coach Brad Brownell also has been mentioned in some circles as a potential candidate, but he's refusing comment on the matter, and WSU Athletic Director Mike Cusack said he hasn't had any contact with Marquette about Brownell.
Xavier coach Sean Miller and Washington State coach Tony Bennett are thought to be at the top of Marquette's wish list, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Crean's top assistant, Buzz Williams, also has interviewed for the job, the newspaper reported.
Another name popping up is former UD player Anthony Grant, the coach at Virginia Commonwealth. Grant is considered a candidate for the LSU opening, too.
"He's just very, very good," said Don Donoher, his former coach at UD. "I think he'd be terrific wherever he went."

Who do you think will get the Marquette job?
r A-10 coach turns down MU and the BIG EAST. From Dayton Daily News ...
In other news, Mitt Romney is staying put and will not accept the Republican nomination for president. It's easy to stay put when nobody else wants you.
I don't know if you should assume that he said no. It appears that the Gregory to Marquette idea was based upon the fact that he wasn't wearing any Dayton gear down in San Antonio. From the reactions of Dayton fans, I would hope that he wasn't offered a position.
Oh, darn. ::)
Can someone turn down a job offer that was never made? Gregory himself says MU never even contacted him. Yet you're complaining that he turned down Marquette and the Big East. Hmmm.

Exactly!
Next Cardinal Strict's coach will turn down the job so he can brag about how he dumped MU. We will never know if he was a serious candidate or making these statements to inflate his own stock.
No great loss.
....and MU fans everywhere breathe a sigh of relief.
Denying interest in a job that wasn't offered? Where have we heard that before?
Izzo must really teach these guys well.
Now on to Izzo bashing? Wow! If Izzo is a problem, then who in the world would be good enough?
Dude -- That was Crean bashing. I actually like Izzo
Oh no!!!!!!!!!!
We might as well fold the program at this point. An A-10 coach who wasn't offered the job tells a paper he said no. We are so screwed. Will the Chicago Catholic League take us in at this point?
I was too lazy to turn the teal sarcasm font on.
