... to be able to say with even the slimmest of confidence that he would be an outstanding or a horrible choice to become the next basketball coach at Marquette?
I am reading all of these impassioned opinions here about whether Williams should be the guy. These opinions are based on what? Who knows a lick about the man?
These fervent opinions of Williams are even more puzzling than the zealous feelings that Indiana University's administration, students and other fans are displaying toward Tom Crean. In most cases, the exuberance toward Crean is based almost entirely on what people in Indiana have read or been told about Crean. Few of them have ever actually seen Crean coaching a basketball team.
Crean seems to give it his all, yes. But despite the perceptions and optimism now consuming the state of Indiana and its flagship state university, Crean is not a coaching genius who ranks among the nation's elite basketball minds and tacticians. He is far from it.
I think there will be a time down the road when Indiana fans feel they were misled about Crean and what he would do for Indiana basketball.
Many people here seem to have equally strong feelings about Williams and whether he has the experience, knowledge and skills to take over at Marquette.
How would anyone know? Who is he?
strongly agree
I agree as well.
And, I'll go one step further. They want a coach with a pedigree and resume so satisfy the ego. Those that are anti-Buzz think we are "settling" and therefore we must not be an elite university. These are exactly the same feelings IU fans had. Imagine how they felt when Bennett said no.
Why didn't Miller, Bennett or Grant jump at the MU job? Maybe they did not want it. Maybe it timing wasn't right. Look at what TC just did. From a Sunday call to Tuesday morning, he decided to completely turn his family upside down by telling them they were moving. Not everyone coach on someone's short list is going to bed thinking he might do the same to his wife/family tomorrow.
Too bad IU did go after Crean before Bennett. Crean would have taken the job 10 days earlier we could have gone after Horn.
