This is the Big East people, the BEST damn conference in America. Money is not an object for MU. They will pay whatever it takes. I just think all these names we see from people, fosters a "mid major" attitude. MU is the top job available in College Basketball. All these factors should allow MU to lure away a fairly big name. Who that is, I don't know, but calls HAVE to be made to guys like Rick Barnes, Larry Brown(he has an MU connection and combined with Buzz named Associate HC) this would be a grand salami of a hire, so what if they say no??
You have to aim high. This hire HAS to be a home run. the guy HAS to be able to sustain the level of recruiting (Or higher) that TC had here. Yes, I know he missed on some guys but what Coach doesn't?? I don't know about any of you, but NIT appearances or no tournament at all doesn't appease me. I do NOT want to see a drop off or it's likely this program could fall back into obscurity. Does anyone want that??
Where exactly do we sit in the current college basketball landscape? It's hard to tell, exactly... but whomever we do end up getting, will be a big indication of where we are at...
i think everyone on the board agrees we should try for the best available. I hope the AD and Adminstration have the same goal and can recognize the best available. Also, we are likely to get turned down by some our targets for any number or reasons.
i just hope they cast the net wide enough and knock on some doors that are great choices but wouldn't be obvious ones.

My thoughts exactly. Often times we drink the Kool aid regarding MU. This is a true, national litmus test for the MU program. If we are as good a program as we think we are, there should be some solid interest. If not..................

Larry Brown(he has an MU connection and combined with Buzz named Associate HC)
I don't think we will get Larry Brown nor do I want him but what is his Marquette connection?
Ok and when Howland left Pitt they hired jamie Dixon and when heathcote left MSU they hired Izzo. MU should hire Buzz. He has more experience than either those two had. he has more experience than Crean had. He helped recruit the players taht took a doormat like Texas A&M to an Elite 8. he has coached under Crean and gillespie, two guys that know how to run a program. He helped sign the second best class Crean has signed since his first year. the guy is a tireless worker and winning in college is 90% recruiting. Buzz will get it done. He has proven he can recruit at the high D1 level none of these low major candidates have proven that.

Ok, maybe connection is not the right word, but he is good friends with TC. In fact before MU started play in the BE in their inaugural season, TC called LB to ask how he should build things in the Big East and LB told him he needed to start with 3 "dynamic" Guards...Wahlah......You have DJ, JM and WM.
Just last year TC wanted LB to join his staff as an assistant, LB declined.

What the heck is everybody talking about with this class that's coming in? Not a one of them has played a minute and a couple of them are suspect as all get out!
Dameon Mason was one of Crean's highest rated players...how did that work out?

Agreed. This is the worst case tha PRN and all the Crean bashers haven't been able to answer for years. We have no coach and apperantly we have no interest in our vacancy. My fears were put on hold after the press conference MU had the other day, but the rumor mill does not sound positive.
In fact it reminds me of 89 when Tony Barone was the leading candidate for the MU job.
Nobody we want aspires to a upper middle class BEast job, recruiting against the B10 and the HOF coaches in the BEast. So, we either promote Buzz or take a coach from a lower league who is likely to get his doors blown off in both recruiting and X's and O's. Crean raised the program's profile. The program did not raise Crean's profile. As evidenced by who is not remotely interested in the job.
Who is the current coach at Belmont Abbey?
Go get him!

Oh Larry Brown would cause a splash but unfortunately it would probably be a 40 foot jump into 2 feet of water splash as he is way too unstable. He is a NBA vagabond who would flirt with a new job every year and probably leave halfway through his first or second year.
Sounds like all you want is a name coach. Its quite obvious that we are not a top tiered program as coaches from programs who I viewed as lesser than ours have spurned us so a name coach is not in the cards no matter how much you want to believe it is. Fact of the matter is at this point in time we are more like a very low level BCS program. We need to hit one out of the park for sure but it looks like it will have to be an assistant type coach similar to TC, i.e. Buzz, Groce or a mid-major coach (Lowery, McKillop). Sorry I have to wisk you back to reality. It pains us all.
I'd love to search high and low for the next MU coach, but the facts are:
- Crean left abruptly
- MU was not prepared to do a coaching search
- the market isn't rich with highly qualified candidates or sexy names
- incoming recruits need immediate attention
- MU has a green AD
Even with Cords helping with the search, there aren't a ton of people out there that are highly qualified. Even with an inexperienced AD, we still have Cords assisting in the search so hopefully we can find a quality person that isn't high on a lot of people's radars but may turn out to be a quality hire.
