Title: Christmas List time
Post by: MarquetteBallin on December 12, 2006, 09:54:23 AM
Alright what's everyone want for Christmas? Marquette basketball speaking that is...

That MU is playing a meaningful game on March 22nd or 23rd.  In other words a Sweet 16 trip is what I want.  Anything more would be the icing on the cake.

And DJ to stay another year because with the additions of Scott, Trevor and Damian, this team would start and finish the year top 10.

I want a 2-1 start, at least, for Big East play.  MU's initial schedule is rather tough with several road games at the beginning.  We need to get off on the right foot so that we aren't a bubble team come March.  At least 9 wins in conference would be great.  6-8 wins at home and 2-4 wins on the road is realistic, imo.  Oh, and some better outside shooting would be nice.

I want DJ to get his head screwed on straight, stop the foolish NBA thoughts, and come ready to play from the opening tip.

And I would like Crean to actually coach an offense other than the dreaded "weave" and forget that nonsense about DJ playing point from the side, whatever the heck that means.  That was a bizzare radio show.

I would like MU fans to stop thinking that they know what DJ is thinking

The kid is an excellent student, a great teammate, and it's an honor to have him in an MU uniform......

2 out of 3 to start the Big East schedule sounds good to me as well

I'd like a nickname and logo that is not so despised and embarrassing that placing it on merchandise ensures that it will not sell.

I'd like McNeal to stop shooting 3's.  And for Fitz and Cubillan to shoot more of them.

QuoteI'd like a nickname and logo that is not so despised and embarrassing that placing it on merchandise ensures that it will not sell.

I find this hilarious.  Why are so many people still so hung up on the damn nickname.  Life is too damn short.  I root for Marquette.  It does not matter what the nickname is.  I guess I'd prefer to be the Warriors, but in the end, what does it really matter?  Does it make MU a better academic institution?  Does it get us another final four?

Maybe it sells more t-shirts.  That's a big maybe.  Really, people would just buy a Warrior t-shirt instead of a Marquette t-shirt, so there is probably not much of a net gain.

How many more donations would it lead to?  If you listen to some of the tough talkers, it will garner quite a big increase.  I tend to be a bit more skeptical of those who say they are withholding money over a name.  Hard to really prove if they would actually donate more.

But hey, it's your Christmas wish.

You don't have to take my word for it. Go to the Union and see how many items are for sale with our team name or logo on it. Or check out the online store.

Next Game Wish:
a 20 point win against UMBC!!!

Big East Wish:
Win the Big East conference tourny

NCAA tourny wish:
Get farther in the tournament than Wisconsin, and do it by killing Big Ten teams (because we all know the Big Ten is really weak this year)

I'd like some of Lazar's threes to start falling.  When in rythm, he has a pretty nice 'stroke', and I think some more of his are going to start falling.  I'm not asking for hand-in-the-face, running off a screen and immediately jack one up type shots, either. Just 45% on penetration-and-kick threes is all I ask for.

Oh, and I want Wes to start taking some control on offense, too, although I'd first like to see James back running the point.

You mean there are MU items that are  in stock in an MU store?  How appaling......you're right the store would look much better if everything was sold out.  This may be the weakest arguement yet....even if Golden Eagle stuff isn't selling, there is no way you'd know that by simply walking into the store, you do know most store restock supply weekly, sometimes daily, right?

Damn I just checked the online store after reading your comment about a lot of items on sale but I didn't see any.  Would love to pick up some items on sale online.  Do you have a link to the sale items?

So what?  So people are forced to buy a t-shirt that says Marquette rather than one that says GE or Warriors.  What does it matter.  I bet most items at most schools carry the university name rather than the mascot or nickname.  Of course there are exceptions like UW with their love of Bucky, but for the most part when I see someone with a Depaul shirt, it says Depaul, not Blue Demons, UConn rather than Huskies, etc.  Do you think people would buy more merchandise if the name Warriors was on it than they do now with Marquette on it?  It's probably a zero sum game.

Don't forget we have Maurice Acker eligible next season. He averaged 9.2 points a game and 4.6 assists per game running the point for Ball State last year. On top of that he was the MAC ROY. With the incoming freshman, the continued development of Lazar, Trend and David as well as the development of the Big Three, next year could be a special year. But as for Christmas this year... I'd just like to see us focus on getting that first round bye in the Big East Tournament and then go on to focus on the NCAA tournament. Anything else is just a bonus

Well, I don't know what this proves, but I was called by a student from MU a few weeks ago asking for some money (she mentioned the Al and the library in her sales pitch).  I declined and stated I haven't donated since the nickname change and was very unhappy with the initial decision, the Gold fiasco, and the "survey" that excluded Warriors as a choice when the issue came up again, and there was no way I would contribute again unless the name went back to Warriors.  She was very polite and said "well, you aren't the first."  Now, I could have been the second person, or maybe a lot more people do hold back on contributions due to the loss of the Warrior name.

And each game I wear the same Warriors hooded sweatshirt (which I think was made by an MU student a few years ago...it was purchased on ebay and I got it for a Christmas gift), and I get compliments each and every game from people walking through the BC, or people sitting near me, wondering where I got it and if they were still available.

Quotewell, you aren't the first."

You aren't the first to use it as an excuse to not donate.  My point is, there is no way of proving whether you would have donated...other than your word, I guess.  Considering the anonymity provided by message boards, there's no way of knowing if you are honest or full of it. Your evidence is anecdotal and probably true, but there's no really way to be sure.

Also, is it at all possible that MU receives donations from some organizations or groups of people that otherwise would not donate because of our nickname?  Is it possible that we get some $ from Native Americans that we would not otherwise.

As I stated above, I prefer Warriors, but I prefer to move on because in the grand scheme of things, for me at least, it's just not a big deal.

The thing that really bothers me is how fractured the MU community seems at times.  I'm not sure if it's the same for other fan bases, but we have a fracture between pro-Warriors, anti-Warriors, and don't care either way people.  Hell, we've even got a fracture in message board usage between this site and its predecessor vs. Scout.  To dust off an old favorite, "can't we all just get along"

Post by: shaquilvaine on December 12, 2006, 09:36:48 PM
this nickname talk is nauseating

1) I'd like the team's assist to turnover ratio to be positive
2) I'd like McNeal to cut his turnovers per game from 4 to 2.5 by the end of the year
3) I'd like Fitzgerald to start chucking it up there like he has no conscience.
4) I'd like our team free throw percentage to approach 70%
5) I'd like everybody to stay healthy.
6) I'd like Lazar to play over 25 minutes a game

My Marquette Christmas wish (we all want MU to win, so let's not even bother mentioning that):

1. Novak, Diener and Wade and one more year of eligibility for each (I can dream, can't I?)
2. NBA playing time for Novak and Diener
3. A win over Wisconsin in the NCAA tourney
4. ESPN radio to finally strengthen the signal
5. A hot Dance Team  :o

In and of itself, maybe not, but to me it's an example of MU becoming just the latest in a long line of Politically Correct nuthouses.

My Christmas list would be...

1.  Change the name back to Warriors
2.  Beat UW in Madison in 2007 (an early wish for next year)
