Just a thought...if Cottingham is still in Milwaukee to meet with the BOT, could Bill Cords possibly be in San Antonio on behalf of Marquette? Not sure what he would be able to do, however, in terms of being the "third party" initiating contact with potential candidates, etc...but just a thought.
I hope that is not the case because if it is that just proves the lack of trust the university has in the new AD. Like it or not this is Cottingham's job now and he deserves the right to do it. I love the idea that Cords is helping, but he should be no more than an assistant to the search.
Cottingham may be perfectly capable -- I'm sure he is -- but he's been an AD how long? Who is he going to know in San Antonio?
Gotta say I agree with PRN here...I'm thinking it's very likely Cords could already be laying potential groundwork with contacts of potential candidates in order to help expedite this for Cottingham. Cords is a very well-known figure in these circles, Cottingham is not at this point, so the more help we can get Steve, the better. Ultimately it will end up being Steve's decision IMO (well, maybe after running it past Fr. Wild).
Hell, IU had Eddie Fogler "contact" Crean.

Hell, IU told Crean to "contact" Eddie Fogler.
Whoops, fixed that for you...
I think Cords will play a leading role in this process and I think it bodes well for us that he will. Why not use his experience and contacts at this crucial moment?
