Title: My question to Katz
Post by: Dish on April 03, 2008, 04:15:04 PM
The Dish (Elgin, IL): The next Marquette coach is....(Miller, Bennett, Groce, Brownell?)

Andy Katz: (5:11 PM ET ) Should have been Darrin Horn.
We'll see if they go with a John Groce and go the way of an assistant. I know they hired an assistant before in Tom Crean but you could argue that Crean elevated the job to where it is now a head coach's job. I don't see Miller going from Xavier to Marquette. Tony B told me he didn't want to pursue Marquette. Brad Brownell was next at IU so maybe he could be on the hopper at MQ. The Eagles have a new AD and someone who hasn't made this kind of hire before.

Nice rip there. Now we are a "head coach's job". Easy on the praise Katz. National media does not think much of our program.

Well maybe if the scum bag didn't hide his status with IU from the administration, we could have landed Horn.  We missed him by about 12 hours!

I would not have been happy with Darrin Horn.

Don't know if this is someone from this board or not, but this was in Katz's chat too:

Dave (Milwaukee): Hey Andy, just wanted to congratulate you on FINALLY getting that story to break of "Tom Crean to ___________." Seems like you've been trying to break it for about 5 years and it finally happened. Good job!

Andy Katz: (5:27 PM ET ) Is that sarcasm? Hey, all I know is that Crean had interest in Indiana a few years ago but decided not to pursue it and the domino of him to Illinois and/or Kentucky wasn't obscure. I felt good about the sources that he was potentially in the mix. I never wrote or said that HE WAS DEFINITELY going.

I understand why Darin Horn would have been the obvious choice, but I'm not losing any sleep over not getting him.  He did a good job at Western Kentucky, but where is his recruiting base?  The other candidates on that list seem to have more inroads in a variety of cities that can help us.  Personally give me someone with a pedigree stronger than our own (e.g. Ford w/slick Rick or Anthony Grant and Donovan) or of course Sean Miller.

Pat (Bloomington): Hearing anything about Crean's assistants, Andy?

Andy Katz: (5:29 PM ET ) Not yet. But I was anticipating that he would take his staff.

Something tells me, if there were Internet message boards back in 1963, you wouldn't have been happy with Al McGuire, either.

EDIT: I'm not comparing Darrin Horn to Al McGuire. Just saying PRN will find fault with anything.

Undoubtedly many would not. And also remember that there were plenty of people who thought --at the time -- that Bob Dukiet was a good hire.

Selection is an imperfect science, though it can be done well or poorly. I realize that there's no way for me to have all the information necessary to judge the quality of hire before I see results.

(I do of course have my own opinions, and I would feel a little better if Cords were around to handle this.)

That would be the "kick in the face" after crumpling from the kick in the groin.

Not really, IMHO. I expect that many/most of the staff will leave and that a new coach would want the opportunity to build his own staff. That doesn't preclude keeping anyone, and of course of we were to hand the job to Buzz Williams things would look different.
