mosarsour posted this on another thread. thought it might get buried, so i posted it here. good listen if you're up for it. Patrick doesn;t beat around the bush too much...
This is a really good interview
"I want it to be when we see each other [the team], that we pick up right from where we left off. And I think time will heal that. I don't think that they're very happy with me right now, and I understand that. But, I want to be able to pick that up and build on the the bonds that we've built. And that's all you can ask for. And its the same thing with the administration, and it's the same thing with your close friends, and it's the same thing with fans........that stuff is so important to me."
We are not very happy, Tom, and I don't think we will be "picking up where we left off" when we see you again.
I was a sucker, and felt for the con man. I woke up today, and discovered how ugly that a-hole is.
He is also confusing leaving Michigan State as an assistant and abandoning guys like McNeal, Matthews and James with a single year of eligibility.
Those guys might forgive and forget, but I don't think it'll be easy.
I like how Dan downplayed Marquette by pretty much implying it was not a major program!
I think tan tommmy is underestimating how pissed off everyone is. So by TC's logic we start of where were before then that would 'really really pissed of'!
Now that TC is at a 'major program' then he can do the dan patrick show more . . thank goodnes.
Has anyone noticed that Crean uses the pronoun "our" when talking about Marquette? "Our players," "our administration," "our fans." He hasn't shifted that yet to Indiana. He used "our" in the press conference yesterday and in subsequent interviews.
I think he does feel bad about the way he left. At least O'Neill went on Steve "The Homer" True's show after he left for Tennessee to kind of sign off on Marquette and Milwaukee. Crean may want to consider doing the same, or at least granting an interview to the Milwaukee media.
In the rush and excitement of taking the Indiana job, I don't know yet if he realizes the bridges he has burned to the Marquette community. Its a shame, because he did good work at Marquette and the majority of fans embraced him and his family. I wonder how his wife and kids feel.

I studied poli sci undergrad which was essentially the study of narcisism.
I wonder if Crean is even capable of understanding those bridges he burnt down.
After all, what could Marquette (which city is it in, DP?) have against a guy making a "heart choice" like this?

I'm sure they're very worried about where they are going to put all the money that Tom obviously loves so much. They feel fine. His kids are too young to really be leaving anything and his wife was probably very involved in the decision process.
Wow - did he NOT have an answer about the contract question - he tried to pin one on Dan and Dan said "I lived up to my contract" - Crean is not looking good. "Because it's Indiana" - got I am tired of that line already. He grew up in Michigan for gods sake. Yeah - next it's because it's Michigan State. Take the Indiana job to build it over the long haul - so "people know I'm going to be here" what a joke. Ugh.
"I'd been there longer than anyone since Al McGuire had been there" "My emotional level right now is a wreck." And.....
I think we're finished. We are not picking up where we left off. He is really making himself look very insincere.

I think this part is important. I'm not sure if it will wear off on both sides whereas into the summer Crean realizes just how hurtful his departure was or where the fans step back once we have a new coach and some guys haven't left and realize that Crean fucked up the departure but he still did good things.
Tenuous times for MU fans. Well, except for PRN and 4ever. ;)
Does Crean want to pick up before or after his Marquette players saw the ticker on ESPN go by?
Relatedly, how do you pick up from somewhere if you've reduced "somewhere" to nil through your last-minute behavior?
The best part is when he's trying to convince Dan Patrick to come to midnight madness and he asks someone in the background, "We have midnight madness here right?"
Here's the bad news, he confirms he had a buyout which is also what was confirmed to me today.
That means no big money coming to MU other then the buyout, which I had heard this morning is 6 figures only.

TJ,
The reason I asked how Crean's wife and kids feel is that Joanie seemed to enjoy their life in Milwaukee and from every report on here she was very nice to talk to and got involved in the community. She's used to it as a coach's daughter, but my guess is she is sad to leave her friends behind. Plus, his oldest daughter is 12 - a tough age to have to move. His son is friends with all the MU players.
Like I said, at some point he is going to realize his exit was pretty bad. Unfortunately, there may be no mending unless he does something to reach out, and it already probably too late for that.

Did you notice how pock marked his face is on HD....What was Joani thinking?
You know .. I'm surprised .. How many times did Crean buy full page ads in the Milwaukee JS? Almost every year, there was some ad ..
I'm surprised Crean doesn't make IU pay for an ad like that, trying to mend fences in Milwaukee. "Thanks, I loved my time at MU, I'm sorry the news leaked out like it did, and if I could do it over again, I would. Thank you to the fans, the coaches, the players, yadda yadda, you will always be in my heart, yadda yadda."
Fine, don't do it in the MJS .. what's a full pager in the MU Tribune? No, wait. That's like bringing a half-dozen roses home to the missus after a fight. He needs the 2 dozen rose bouquet. Gotta be in the MJS.

way too late for fence mending. And the DP zingers, "Hey I didn't even know what city MU was in", and "now that you are coaching a major program" well, up yours too, Dan.
Patrick was kidding. He used to be on the radio in Milwaukee when before ESPN forced him to quit.
Patrick was definitely kidding with the "because I don't even know where Marquette is" line -- the way I heard it, the line was a shot he took at Crean for minimizing MU.

exactly. he pretty much defecated on crean during that interview, and i thank Dan Patrick for it.
on a totally unrelated note...OMG SAL'S PEPPERONI STUFFED PIZZA IS DELICIOUS!
I don't find alluding to not knowing what city Marquette is in on a national show all that amusing. Then again, I don't like us getting dissed by anyone.

As was the line about "now you're coaching at a major program" in my eyes.
I am tired.
Tired of Crean, tired of the banter. Thanks for the service, Tom. But you have moved on and so have we. Let's take a page out of our players books and focus on the future. Here's hoping our next coach can take us even higher.
Go Warriors.

Wow - I didn't know that his kids were that old. 12 sucks for moving. I'm sure they'll be fine, but I really thought that they were all under 10. His son will be friends with all the IU players soon enough, so I think he'll be fine.
Who gives a rat's ass? He's been talking out of both sides of his mouth for years. A leopard doesn't change his spots. Forget about that overpaid, egotististical, used car salesman. And, I'm sorry if I've offended any used car salesmen out there.
On a lighter note...if Tom Crean will show up in a Tae Kwon Do uniform on an ATV, I don't see it beyond him to wear a checkered flannel.
what a jackass. i really wish DP would have called him on his bullsh*t. Crean there is nothing here to pick up from other than hatred for you. I think Crean just likes to hear himself talk.
I like what he was saying at the beginning about the length of his contract, how he wants people to know that he will be there. I only wish DP would have mentioned the contract extension, didnt that make people think that you were going to be here?
he cares for our players?!?! my ass.

So is this the new revisionist history on the theory of the TC evolution? He was at MU longer than Hank Raymonds? Rick Majerus? Wow. Throw in Teri Mitchell too while you are at it, TC.

Amen! The people looking the most foolish out of this are those that didn't see this sooner. If you worshiped him and thought he alone was responsible for all things good about Marq then, you look more pathetic now condemning the man. He took a better job for more money and prior to that was a PR master with better than average coaching skills. He is a tireless worker, but somehow, I just don't think coaching is his calling. Considering this, he got an incredible deal from IU.
Marq stepped up to the plate the minute he took over in '99 and quite frankly, I don't think he took advantage of all it had to offer when recruiting for someone considered so charming. His floor coaching including his offensive and defensive philosophies have always been easy to question. His crunch time decision making, too, which I think has something to do with the fact he never played at even the HS level. All along, I will never understand while people weren't more objective when he was the coach?? Many of you also acted like getting good recruits to come her was like recruiting in Siberia. He was great in many of your eyes and when he wasn't there was always an excuse or reminder of the Final 4 and DWade.
I also never expected the venom being directed at him now. Maybe it is just the msg board fanaticism that is a large part of our society? In any event, hopefully it is just the intense love for your team that makes you so blind. Some of us prefer to have a little objectivity.
coward...third option coward at that, but he got paid, and it's Indiana!
was it to ask about the IU job, or was it to see how long Izzo would be staying at Crean's dream job

No, the people that were behind him enjoyed winning and having MU relevant again for the first time in 3 decades. I think most people knew he was a prick, but he wasn't cheating and he was winning so people will put up with a lot easier. If we was cheating and winning, his prickness would have killed him a long time ago.
Thanks for reposting for me. Crean came off as I expected and arrogant d-bag. Did we really expect anything less? Aside from 4ever, PRN, and a few others, we were all duped by this SOB. We were all suckers for believing the hype when in reality all he REALLY gave us was 1 magical year and a move to a bigger conference. That's it....Oh yeah, and that million or whatever to the soccer team.

Wow....well here's what he brought to me as a fan 2000 miles away that I didn't see at all in the 15 years prior
Three straight NCAA appearances for the first time since 1980
A Final Four
3 NBA players in 4 years
31 Big East wins in 3 years (we couldn't get 31 MCC wins in 4 years back in the day)
8 post season bids in 9 years
0 NCAA violations
3 25 win seasons (only McGuire had more...no other MU coach had even one)
A TON of wins over coaches named Ryan, Pitino, Huggins, Calhoun, Dixon, Howland, Gillespie, Wright, Brey, Bartow, Prosser, etc.
A TON of wins over schools named Duke, UCONN, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Wake Forest, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Indiana, Gonzaga, Oklahoma State, Pitt, Louisville, DePaul, Memphis, Dayton, Tennessee
89% graduation rate
Travis Diener, Steve Novak, Dwyane Wade, Trey Schwab, DJ, McNeal, etc
Now he is an ass for what he did this last week, but some of you are really throwing the baby out with the bath water. To suggest all he did was tow things....that is not accurate and just looks like whining.
He's gone but there was a lot to cheer about in the last 9 years, a heckuva a lot more then there was the previous 9 years or the previous 9 to that some might argue.

Yeah, I agree. But I do understand people reacting emotionally and not seeing the bigger picture at the moment.
Whining? What do you call what you've been doing for the past 2 days? You are clearly practically grief stricken over the departure of a guy you called impossible to work for, among other things

Grief stricken abuot Crean....give me a break PRN. The guy is gone....I'm fine with it. I've called him a douche, a dick, a dink and a jerk...how is that grief stricken about Crean? Sigh. What I'm grief stricken about and you can't get through your thick head still...STILL....is that MU has been kicking ass the last 5 or 6 years on a national stage....thats' what I"M GRIEF STRICKEN ABOUT. Hire a coach that will CONTINUE THAT, and I'll be pleased as punch. Hire one that DOESN'T CONTINUE THAT...and yeah, that would make me grief stricken. I know you disagree and think the last 5 years anybody with a whistle and a CYO background could do, but I'm not quite as convinced as you...of course I didn't allow any feelings of good or ill will toward the man cloud the facts of wins, losses, etc like you did. Should be easy to get a replacement according to you, tons of guys waiting in the wings.
But you now what, this process sure is exciting and fun...I can feel it. ::)
Hiring of this nature is never easy...and IU may come to regret their hire.
I respect and appreciate what TC did for our program. But I don't for a minute think that we cannot replace him with someone at least as good. There are no givens, however, and a bad mistake could set us back a bit. And that mistake could be hiring someone that most people currently agree would be a "great choice." We just won't know for awhile.
