I think our number one priority should be Sean Miller. Make a serious run at him and make him an offer he cannot refuse. He is probably the hottest young coaching talent around right now, and he has the pedigree of a successful run at Xavier, including this year's run as the 3 seed, to make him a prime-time candidate. There may be better coaches out there than Miller, but none whose decision to join MU would mark MU as a destination rather than a stepping stone. If we, as a school, can lure away the hottest young college coach around, we can sell our program as top flight.
Right now, this is all about PR. Can we keep up the impression that MU is a nationally recognized elite program? If we land a guy like Miller, we go along way to satisfying that PR need.
If Miller declines, you have to put out feelers for other big names (think people like Tubby Smith or even Lon Kruger). These big names, like Miller and Smith are not sure bets. In fact, they may even be considered long shots. Nevertheless, we ABSOLUTELY have to go after them hard, including a sizable financial package, to show the country, including incoming recruits and potential future recruits, that we are a legitimate program capable of attracting legitimate names.
If we can't get the marquee name, then we better do our homework, because it is going to be tough to land another Crean type figure. My second tier would include Buzz Williams and Anthony Grant. Both potentially great coaches. However, both simply don't have the pedigree at this time to be the "big name" signing that might entice our incoming class to stick to their LOI's.
... and get on it FAST.
if Williams is already asking out, then who is next??
