I can't see how he isn't??? I know it's not that simple, but in a way it is. I wish Al was around to share his thoughts on this one.
I've stuck up for TC as a coach many times, mostly because I thought he cared deeply about his players and the program; however, I felt he cared too much about the program to leave for any other position but MSU. This seems like about the worst time he could leave as well (with the big three seniors probably coming back). If he wasn't convincing he was going to be here for Wes, McNeal and James till they were through, or in the NBA, I can't believe they would have signed.
It will be interesting to see how he fares against MU, MSU and WI...his track record against those coaches isn't the greatest and IU deserves some serious sanctions for hiring a coach with a history of infractions only to see those infractions occur on their watch.
I re-read a Joe Posanski article today on Roy Williams leaving KU in 2003. Seems to fit here.
I have my issues with the guy but calling him a "D-Bag"? Come on...he was here for 9 years. That's an enternity. He got us to 5 NCAAs and a Final Four. And most importantly he got MU to the point where investment in the program was tops in the country.
I know we can succeed without him but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate what he gave us.

Nobody can lie with a smile on his face quite like this douchebag can
Idiot, have you ever done anything for nine years in your life? Seriously have you ever spent 70 hours a week working towards one goal for 9 years? I've had the same job for 5 and it's starting to drive me crazy. Have you ever done anything for 9 years? He made a decision based on what he thought was best for him and his family, any of you who have a problem with that are selfish a-holes.
If you're asking if I've turned down better jobs to stay with kids I felt trusted me the answer is yes.
If Crean was going to Mich. St. it would be similar to Roy Williams going from Kansas to UNC.
If you get paid millions to do your job you shouldn't complain.
If you tell someone you're staying and MU and leave you are a ____________???? (That would be by deffinition, of course)
I've had the same job for 20 years and I'm happy. I also could name a few coaches who have had the same job for 10+ years and seem happy. If Crean thought job pressure was high at MU wait till he lands in IU without any roots to the school. He can't even hang his hat on being their first choice....
Hi Tom Crean.
So what if Crean had three losing seasons and MU fired him? Would that make MU liars?
If there is any language in his contract that addresses him leaving, i.e. buyout, then he is not a liar. This is the way it works. Otherwise, coaches would never leave. I guess MU can only hire an assistant or an out of work coach. We wouldn't wan't to look like hypocrites by bashing Crean then stealing someone else's head coach.
LOL
You guys are kind of funny. Yeah, it sucks bad that he's leaving before Wes, etc can graduate, but then again how many times does an IU, KU, KY job come along? Not that often.
Coaches are hired to be fired 99% of the time....the good news is that this one actually stuck around for 9 years. The previous 5 didn't come close.
Put yourself in Crean's shoes. He can go to one of the great programs of all time when they are at their absolute LOWEST point. Nothing but upside for him. He's been at MU for 9 years and accomplished things that hadn't been done in 30 years and people still piss and moan.
Trust me, they'll piss and moan at IU too, I've seen it first hand, but at the same time with his recruiting abilities he'll have them contending for a the Big Ten title regularly and certainly in the top 3, he's in a stable conference in a state where he is king, football sucks and he's going to get paid a ton of money because IU will do anything to save that program right now.
Be thankful we're in the Big East (largely due to him) that we can even entertain getting a decent coach to replace him.
But liar...well almost all coaches are liars at this level. That's reality.
If the coach states leaving is a possibility when asked then he's honest. If we promised him 17 years of coaching and fired him, MU would be liars. If they promised him 17 years of salary and fired him, I have no issue. If he told Wes Mathews he could play at MU for Crean for 4 years and leaves... That's something I have no proof of, but it makes me wonder. It was a question not a comment. I have a feeling most of us will make up our minds in a few days when everything is out in the open.
