What always stuck in my craw was that as a wrestling coach in Yorkville he made very little but as a Representative he accumulated enough to be able to write a $3M check to a former student. How did he acquire that much to be able to come up with that

He made a lot of savvy land investments, including for a piece of exurban farmland that later was sold to developers for a $2+ million profit. Why were the developers so interested? The land was near property for a proposed "Prairie Park Corridor" interstate around the western edge of the Chicago region. And just months earlier, Hastert had inserted $207 million toward that project (which never came to fruition) in the Federal Highway Bill.
All a coincidence, for sure.
