I was curious if any Scoopers saw the Notre Dame game in the early 70's live? I think it was '71. Austin Carr had insane college stats, and lit up Marquette as well as pretty much the entire country. He's the first guy that came to my mind. I heard someone interviewing him on the radio and was incredibly impressed. Very humble man. Did he have injuries as a pro? He has 3 of the top 5 scoring games in the history of the NCAA tournament. And that's before the trifecta.

I was thinking best player and forgot about David Thompson.
I remember watching the Duke game vs Kyrie. He didn't do much but you could see the talent. I also remember being infuriated we couldn't guard Plumlee.
Why would you be infuriated that MU could guard someone?
Hughes and Thompson were the first two that came to mind. Then Julius Peppers...
Ja Morant destroyed MU
Agreed on Irving when in KC that year. Lots of good opponents in the Classic in the 80s, Fat Lever, Ron Harper, but Dumars stood out the most.
Tim Locum

Larry Hughes killed us.
Quote from: Scoop Snoop on July 23, 2026, 08:26:53 AMRick Mount, the dirty bastard!
Yes, I was at that game. What hurt more were the missed free throws.
Issac Haas. I feel like he had 42 dunks against us in a game.
In terms of performance, Ben Bentil was incredible in that double overtime game in 2016. Probably the best live opponent performance I've seen.
For who I saw in person, the answers are easy:
Larry Hughes dropping 44 on MU in 1998. He was absolutely unstoppable that day.
Kenyon Martin in 2000 at MU was ridiculous. I remember him swatting a shot a few rows into the student section. That Cincy team is one of the great "what if" questions in tourney history if Martin hadn't gotten injured.
Can't remember every game I've followed since 08/09 but these four are engrained in my head but probably because the tournament losses stay with you.
Zeller (UNC) in 2011
Thornwell (USC) in 2017
Morant (Murray St) in 2019
Manek (UNC) in 2022
Joey Hauser dominated us in the tournament.
As for best performances that I saw in person, I would say Larry Hughes and Mark Aguirre.

I'll defer to the experts but I think Aguirre might have been a better college player but Anthony was a better pro.
In the game I'm referencing, MU was at home and had Robert Byrd on Aguirre. Byrd was MU's best defender at the time. Every time Byrd got close, it seemed Aguire took a step further away and hit it. By the end of the game, he was basically standing on the sideline and hitting them. That entire DePaul team was great but Aguirre was unconscious.

We played them in the Sweet 16 my freshman year (March 1979). Had an 8-point lead when Worthen just barely overthrew an open Toone on what would have been a breakaway dunk for a double-digit lead. Marquette probably would have then gone into its version of a stall, which was quite effective back in those pre-shot-clock days. But DePaul came right back and scored, eventually took the lead, and held on to win by 6. Aguirre didn't even score 20, IIRC.

Al would have choked either way.
I don't doubt that David Thompson was the best college player many folks here saw play vs. MU, and that is the question asked in the OP.
But he had 21 points in that game. Very nice, yes, but nowhere near the production vs. MU of some of the other names mentioned, such as Croshere or Hughes. Of course, many of those who chose the higher scorers either weren't alive when MU played in the 1974 NC game or were too young to remember.
Fun topic. Good job, Muggs.
The best tandem of players I saw in person was Minnesota in Dec 1976, Marquette's championship season. Michael Thompson (a future 1st pick in the draft) along with Kevin McHale (a future 3rd pick in the draft). They also had a good guard in Ray Williams.
I admit I was wrong on McHale, I thought he was good because of Thompson. I remember Marquette trailed 36 to 19 at the half and I remarked to a friend, "if we hold them scoreless in the second half and put up another 19 points we win.
In college at UWEC talking smack to anybody who would listen that MU was the biggest sleeper in the tourney. Then friggin Croshere had what felt like 50+. Oops.

Yep, was at that game and that was quite a pair. MU did play well the second half and lost by 7 or 8 but couldn't get over the hurdle.
Austin Carr vs Dean the dream when they both were on there respected freshman team, the freshman team game was almost packed to watch them
