Question:
Using the Scoop Hiroshima Transfer Scale, how would you rate Sheek's transfer news?
Option 1: Odartey Blanskon: Good player, but we'll win big without him
votes: 16
Option 2: Sam Hauser: This will ultimately lead to Shaka getting fired
votes: 7
Option 3: Joey Hauser: Never have a big man reclassify and redshirt, duh!
votes: 14
Option 4: Trevor Mbakwe: Good player, but bummed we never got to see him play for Marquette
votes: 84
Option 5: Arby's: Looked promising, but should have known we'd be betrayed
votes: 20
Feel free to vent in the comments. No one reads them anyway.
It's not like Joey could have played when he first enrolled. He came to MU to rehab the ankle injury that prevented him from playing during his final year of high school.
For me the impact will depend on where Sheek ends up. The Hausers and Mbakwe all ended up in the Big Ten. If we lose Sheek to SLU then that's an additional punch in the gut.

I don't recall Sam ending up in the Big Ten.
As for SLU vs Big Ten, today it actually makes MORE sense and isn't a gut punch — the Big Ten has no room for direct payments. SLU does. Therefore, SLU or another MM makes more sense for Sheek at this point than a "P4" school does.

If Sheek ends up at SL or similar, the whole episode will be more of a gut slap than a punch. It will also be an indication that he felt log jammed by Hamilton and Clark.

With the high turnover of positions in DC, I think there are a lot of scoopers who would be hired simply because of their ability to create facts out of thin air.
Apologies for contaminating this thread with DC crap, but I think the analogy really fits, especially with a number of the posts regarding Sheek. Just state something as fact and it is the truth.
Gonna have to thread the needle finding a guy who is going to be a backup while also telling him not to worry about the other two centers entering their third and fourth years in the program in a seller's market.
There seems to be a lot of confidence around here that Sheek would have been a contributor next year. For all we know he won't be any better than Clark or Hamilton. If he had been significantly better than Clark or Hamilton he probably wouldn't have redshirted.
Also, until one of Shaka's redshirts is actually good my assumption is they will all be failed development projects. All his successful development guys have shown flashes as true freshman.

Fine, we lost Sam to the ACC to the defending national champs, but whatever. We lost those three to Power 4 schools.
The Big Ten does have plenty of room for direct payments. Most of those programs are dedicating at least 15% of the $21.3 million for next year's cap to basketball. They also have greater outside NIL resources to increase those payments. Michigan State, for example, has two guys alone making $2 million plus - Fears and Carr. Michigan had a $10+ million roster last year.
The optics of losing a highly rated recruit to a mid-major in a lesser conference are not good.

I'll be equally unhappy if we lose him to Duke, St. Louis or Chicago State. Doesn't matter. Just bummed we lost him.
Sheek's departure dampens my expectations for next season a little but not much. After whatever recalibration happened over Christmas Break last season, we played like a top 60 team. This was despite Caedin and Josh being our only backup centers. Given that we traded Fru for Gold (massive upgrade), Minessale for Ross (slight upgrade IMHO), will get a year of development from the 7 returners, and are bringing in four freshmen who should at least bring more value than Tre and Sean brought, I still expect a pretty big jump and a single digit seed in the NCAAT. Sheek's departure impacts next year's ceiling because I think he was one of the biggest wild cards on the roster. At bare minimum he'd improve the backup center position, and there was potential for him to be a major contributor, pushing us even higher.
Where Sheek's departure really hurts is the following season. He was supposed to be the center of the future. I don't believe we've been connected to any centers in the 2027 class (correct me if I'm wrong). While I don't have quite the level of disdain for Caedin and Josh that some do, I don't want to be in a situation where they are our only centers after Fru leaves. I was hopeful that in two years, Sheek could be a legit starting center and we would not need to go hunting for a starting center in the portal next season, theoretically freeing up resources to bring in top talent at other positions.
If we go back to the portal this year to replace Sheek, I imagine it will be a guy with potential who may need a year to develop as a back up before being a starter. Problem is, that's a small pond with a lot of fishermen. Will be interesting to see how we pivot.

Dude. 15% of $21.3M is $3.2M. And these teams have mostly full rosters. There's no meaningful direct payment money left for a Sheek - only the hopes of third-party deals, which have been very small this past year.
Meanwhile, a MM with room for direct payments can offer guaranteed money that will come through if they want to spend it. Apples and oranges. That's why you should expect Sheek to head to a MM or school with no or fake football.

Almost too reasonable for Scoop. But I would say that, as it mirrors my feelings exactly.
I thought Sheek could be to the 2026-27 team what Oso was to the 2021-22 team - a solid, young backup center who got progressively better as the season went on and then developed into a good starter the following season. So I'm bummed that we won't get the chance to see if that could have happened.
Lots of programs - including lots of really good programs - are starting to go the New Center Every Year route. I guess Marquette will have to join them.

Current state of College basketball is awesome.
If you lack at a current position, just rent someone.
There was 10 or 12 average centers in the portal this year, if they were above average they would be going to the NBA, MU got one of them. They will get one the next year, that's college hoops now. If you have enough money somebody will come.

It is small pond (can't teach height) but Shaka has a track record of sending guys like that to the NBA. I'm sure that's part of what got Sheek here in the first place. When recruiting, he can point to those successes.
So, while the pond is small, we at least have an experienced fisherman with a pretty good looking lure attempting to catch whatever fish remain.

Shaka's favorite musical? Hamilton.
A lot of people are obsessed by Hamilton, some for Wicked, some For Good. Jesus Christ, he isn't a Superstar. But the sun will come out tomorrow as we ease on down the road. The world did not turn upside down. Maybe another player can come from away. We'll just have to wait for it.

I mean I'm sure you'll correct me but it seemed like Royce was playing more of a stretch 4 in the first half the year (poorly) which means that Hamilton vs Royce wasn't really a thought. We didn't have a traditional 5 to battle Caedin for it since Ben also isn't one either. Once Royce stopped being a stretch I thought he started playing over Caedin.

Anybody who's worth having on your roster is not going to be scared of a guy who went from starting to playing under 9 mpg as the season went on. Great flick. Why is Shaka keeping the worst C in the league? Or maybe the second worst. How about you answer the question if Hamilton being on the roster is for the best?
Quote from: Small Orange Soda on April 22, 2026, 09:59:21 PMPlease don't lump me in with JB on the Caedin stuff. Feel free to quote where I said that Sheek left because of him. I haven't said so. But you and several others, who claimed it's fine to have Caedin on the roster because he'll be end of the bench, are now realizing you whiffed. "It's fine Shaka has misevaluated him, he won't play!"
I argued keeping bad players on the roster was a bad idea. And now we're here. You don't have a leg to stand on in this particular argument.
How does Hamilton being on the roster change anything regarding Sheek? If Hamilton wasn't on the roster, what situation would be better for Marquette basketball right now?

Quote from: MU82 on April 22, 2026, 07:41:09 PMShaka will play him all 40 minutes every game, too, which will cause Fru to transfer after the first semester.
You're close, he's going to get 45 minutes since we won't need to run 5 guys out there with him on the floor. Think of the savings!
Quote from: Galway Eagle on April 22, 2026, 09:01:09 PMI mean I'm sure you'll correct me but it seemed like Royce was playing more of a stretch 4 in the first half the year (poorly) which means that Hamilton vs Royce wasn't really a thought. We didn't have a traditional 5 to battle Caedin for it since Ben also isn't one either. Once Royce stopped being a stretch I thought he started playing over Caedin.
Correct. A lot of people around here forget that Royce was awful for the first half of the year, but then again, literally everyone was except Chase. A few guys turned it around, but unfortunately Chase went the other direction.

Find me one time I ever said it was for the best.
Never happened.
What I've said is him being on the roster does not prevent Marquette from building a really good team.
That's objectively true and I have no idea why that's so difficult for you to understand.

We would have 3 open spots instead of 2 to improve the team.

If you can't improve the team with two open spots, it's probably time to just fold the program.

No. 18 is the anointed one who must play in Shaka's mind. It's bizarre, we've seen it. He'll remain a part of the regular rotation, entering games in the first half.
Flyers who don't pan out usually don't play every game. 18 is the exception.

I expect to see him out there 20-25 minutes next year. Hope they run him and Fru on the court at the same time. Two Towers of Power offense and defense.

four. Exactly how would additional two spots translate into an improvement to the team? What positions do you think Shaka should fill? Is the $ available for Shaka to do what you think he should do?

Well, that is the real question. Do we have the resources to acquire the talent and keep the talent to place a competitive team on the court?

Did you really think I would not notice that you failed to address the first two "real" questions? Your simplistic replies to posts is clearly your preferred M.O. Avoid questions that require thinking through an answer and just go with a quick and easy statement about "resources".
Caedin Hamilton is to Shaka as Derrick Wilson is to Buzz. They're riding with their guy no matta what
It is possible Sheek could be like Real Chili. Everybody thinks it is really good, until you taste it and realize it is crap.
Who knows how he will do!

Except that Buzz didn't give Derrick significantly fewer minutes and significantly less responsibility as the 2013-14 season went on. In MU's last regular-season game that season, a 2OT loss to St. John's, Derrick played
47!! minutes. He averaged 31.8 mpg the last 19 games that season; Hamilton averaged 8.9 mpg the last 19 games this past season.
I know you were just having fun, though, so pardon those silly facts.
Now back to our regularly scheduled programming: Blaming Caedin for Marquette's 1978 NCAAT loss to Miami of Ohio.

The 4 spots (I know we have only 3) but to answer your question would be : another 5, another 4 and 2 guards. At least one of them would have to be around a 40 percent 3pt shooter (where you find him I have no idea) and of course they should be able to play at the high major D1 level. As to specific players I have no idea as I don't follow college ball that closely.

According to this: https://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men/d1/current/individual/143
Only 46 players shot 40% or better from three.
Of those 46, only 16 played at a high major school.
Of those 16, only 11 didn't exhaust their eligibility last season.
Of those 11, only 4 entered the transfer portal
Of those 4, only 2 are uncommitted.
So you want us to get Either Milan Momclovic or Paul McNeil Jr

The minimums to qualify for the 3FG% race are quite high, so using this list doesn't make a lot of sense to ID good shooters imo.
That said, the point remains - they don't grow on trees.
I think there were just under 250 players last season who attempted at least 60 3FGAs (roughly 2 per game) and made 40% or better.
If Shaka really wants to win, he'd go get SGA and Jokic.

Technically, Trevor Mbakwe, unlike LeDaryl Billingsley, did play for Marquette, appearing in 11 games.
