Honestly.... this speach was not good...
Really, the issue with this roster is the lack of Sean Jones? Sean Jones, who made worse when he was playing, that Sean jones?
And the focus is on retention? Of which players? If you are focusing on retaining all, you're doing something wrong.
This staff is poor at self evaluations.
Quote from: MU82 on February 19, 2026, 12:26:43 AMYup. This was the public commitment to using the portal that dozens of Scoopers had been demanding.
Actually he explicitly stated that the emphasis would be on retention, especially our young talented guys (wink wink that is where most of our revenue share and NIL money will be going). I am not convinced he is actually excited to make the changes required to turn the program around from that interview. If we do not get at least 4 portal players in the off season to support our young guys he is not making a sincere commitment. We shall see.

It's laughable that is what you took away from his comments and it's very difficult to take you seriously.
His comment about Jones was innocuous yet you're twisting it to something ludicrous.
Next, of course retention of your best player has to be a priority this offseason and going forward. And that primarily means Nigel, Royce, and Adrien. There's nothing remotely confusing about that comment.
And then you conveniently ignore that he:
1) Said he was excited about the process. He likely feels that he has been freed from his self-imposed restrictions
2) They are going to use metrics to fill gaps. Understand what the returnees down well and how to best supplement those skill sets in the portal.
Get some help, dude.

Do you guys not really understand nuance?
Of course he is going to prioritize retaining the players they want to retain. But when he says "rosters are built differently than two or three years ago," what do you think he means by that? And then after his retention statement he says "around them we need to look at what's best for Marquette basketball." And then claims to be excited about that and excited to see how they can improve the team in "different ways."
What do you think he's talking about here? Did you really expect him to say "we are going to take numerous transfers" or something similar? Of course that's what he's talking about.
Honestly, I think that question was planted so he could give this response.

That is not nuance. He is prioritizing how the resources will be spent and that means not spending the resources to get the best transfers to help the team. If he were serious he would prioritize both, if he is serious about what is good for the program, which he did not explicitly say. Additionally, all this "nuance" leads me to believe he has not had those tough conversations with the players that need to take place.

You expect these "conversations" to happen during the season?
Feel like it helps me breathe a sigh of relief. Been a rough year, but at least the usual late season fade has turned into some more optimism instead. Feel like the core players in James, Parham and Stevens give me hope Shaka will supplement properly and let them grow as the cornerstones for this team. Also hopeful some of the redshirts/frosh incomers are hits and Shaka just had a couple of down years recruiting.
Im confused. Would people prefer we allocate funds to transfers first and not retain Nigel and Royce? I sure wouldnt bet on finding better players than them in the portal.
We're going to add some good players from the portal to supplement them and take some of the scoring pressure off of them, not replace them.
Quote from: Its DJOver on February 19, 2026, 08:46:43 AMYou expect these "conversations" to happen during the season?

That's just not how things work. The only potential "conversation" about next season would have been with, and initiated by, Sean if he's planning on applying for an additional year of eligibility.
Don't know if he's having the "conversations" as yet or whether he's holding off until
the season is over. It certainly does sound like he and the staff are making themselves aware of the "metrics" and what they need/want. I am sure that they are zeroing in on the kind of players they want, and with his reference to character, perhaps some of the kind of people they want.

You are reading way too much into this. He is going to target retaining his guys - Nigel, Adrien, Royce, etc. That's what every coach does. They are going to see what is needed and hit the market.
My guess is that Shaka has a pretty clear understanding of who is going to be here next year and who isn't. They may have already had those conversations! But he isn't going to announce anything to the public in a post game presser when the season isn't even over. Are you kidding me?
Y'all are not seeing the forest through the trees here. It is clear, both from the comments Saturday and Shaka's comments yesterday, that they are hitting the portal. That's what everyone has said they wanted, but now because he isn't saying it the way you want, you're going to get on him for that?
Just nutty stuff.
Happy to see Shaka is willing to adjust and he's not, as some here suggested, willing to take his ball and go home.
Annoyed it took a 20-loss season for him to acknowledge something some of us saw coming two years ago.

Come on man, you can read between the lines. This is about as close as a head coach can come to saying our upperclassmen are crap and that they are prioritizing building around the young core. He's not just going to name names like "Chase Ross has been a huge disappointment. Ben Gold is bad."
Not sure how many others ways they can signal they will use the transfer portal and push out (for lack of better term) dead weight. If that doesn't happen then I think most everyone will agree its time to part ways, but that is clearly not the current messaging coming from the AD or head coach.

In regard to retention, try to use some common sense.
We have 3 really good underclassmen already in house, one of which looks like he could be a superstar.
Shaka and staff have built relationships over years with these players. They have bought into Marquette and its culture.
Yet you don't think prioritizing these guys, who look like they can be difference makers, is the right decision?
What do you think similar players like that will get in the transfer portal market? How many schools would Shaka be competing with for players like that? And what do you think the NIL offers will be? Not prioritizing keeping your best young players is just such an inane, illogical notion.
Also, I don't know what Marquette's NIL budget is but it is not unlimited. They staff has to prioritize. Now that doesn't mean they won't spend in the portal and it certainly doesn't mean they can't find some really good players to fill the gaps around what is coming back.
Marquette doesn't have to add highly-paid stars via the portal to be really good next season. If they do, great...but it is not necessary.
I can also guarantee he's had some conversations already with players. You think Sean Jones thinks he's coming back next season? It couldn't be any more obvious that he's been held out so he could potentially get an extra year with via medical hardship.
I have no doubt he'll use the portal to fill Zaide's spot. I think the real question is, will he get rid of the dead weight on the roster - Sean, Caedin, Tre, and Josh Clark? Heck, even DO and Michael Phillips can go. Neither of them seem like they'll be close to ready to step into much bigger roles next year.

There will not be six additional transfers. There won't be four. IMO there will be two.
I'm not gonna insert common sense into what Shaka is saying. He has lacked the ability to self-evaluate the team for nearly 2 years now.
Sean Jones is/was and probably will remain a bad player. Attributing any of the teams' struggles to his absence is laughable and naïve.
Chase Ross is who he has always been. A good/great defender. A decent offensive player in a limited role.
Ben Gold is slightly worse than he has been, but he was always a guy that shot poorly early in seasons and shot better at the end of the year. The only difference is this year he has gotten injured a fair bit.
The rest of the team has young players, which is fine, but they all are bad on defense, and the priority will remain retention according to the coach.
They have not indicated that they intend to "push out" anyone. In fact Andy Katz's signaling in game made it seem as if Shaka wants to add "a guy", singular.

Which is why people are saying three. And Nigel and Royce could be two of the better players in the Big East as soon as next season. That's a good starting point. Add in 2 starting level players, 1 rotational level player, hang onto Stevens as well, and see what you have in Egbuonu, Sheek, and how Philips develops, and that COULD be plenty to compete. This team has no guard depth and Tre has played ok the last few games. I highly doubt it's any indication he's confident in bringing him back as a key piece next season.
Shaka does not believe either of those guys will be significant contributors next season and it would be shocking if both are back. 1, maybe.
Quote from: rocky_warrior on February 19, 2026, 11:56:59 AMAgreed, Shaka has been playing those two more since the portal talk started. Common sense says that's because he believes in them.
Or he's trying to get a final read in meaningless games.
Quote from: Hards Alumni on February 19, 2026, 12:02:49 PMChase and Ben are gone since they're seniors. Obviously, Zaide is gone. I can see one more leaving (Sean), but I'd truly be shocked if it was more than that. IMO, CH, Tre, and Josh Clark all stick around. Teams can carry 15 players, and I think Shaka will grab two and roll out with what he has, and the best players will play the majority of the playing time available.
Nothin like going from 11th to 8/9th place YoY.

Quote from: Vander Blue Man Group on February 19, 2026, 10:57:31 AMIn regard to retention, try to use some common sense.
Are you kidding? These guys can't win games now. What makes you think they'll win games next season. The in coming class has yet to prove they can play high major D1 ball.

I can't decide whether one or two guys need to go. I'm leaning two right now; can't have 3 of those guys back next year like why..

Quote from: muwarrior69 on February 19, 2026, 08:42:21 AMThat is not nuance. Additionally, all this "nuance" leads me to believe he has not had those tough conversations with the players that need to take place.
Wow, you have no clue. You think he is having any tough conversations during the season with the players? Ridiculous.
Many issues will be addressed in March/April. Changes are for sure coming. Until then, relax.
Quote from: Its DJOver on February 19, 2026, 12:21:44 PMI'd take the odds on that.
If they do, that'd be two straight years of bottom of the conference performance. I don't think that would sit well with those in charge.
I don't think the number of ins need to equal the number of outs necessarily. From a NIL financial standpoint, it might make more sense to drop 4 more players (5 total including Zaide), add 3 new players, and then either leave 2 spots open for a more loaded class next year or fill them with $0 NIL walkons. 15 mouths to feed is a lot, especially for 3rd and 4th year benchwarmers. Maybe they will be fine with a pay cut.

There's a balance to it though. Shaka went all in on development and it clearly didn't work. I don't think swinging to a StJ/KSU model will happen/work either (especially with our budget). Is it crazy to suggest the quality of transfers matters more than the quantity?
Two high-quality transfers, preferably a big and a 3-and-D wing who are capable of starting for most good P5 programs, would help this team far more than four depth pieces.

If you think two portal players can't fix the roster (I'd assume a guard and a big) then you're crazy. Remember, every guy you add to your roster from the portal increases the chance that you lose guys from your team as well. If Shaka grabs a couple of guards does Adrien or Royce see their minutes impacted by a player who might only be around a year and leave too?
This is what a lot of people here do not think about and do not consider. Our players could easily portal for better money/opportunity.

I am not advocating for wholesale changes every year and frankly do not like/appreciate that model. However, when a chunk of your team last place in conference team has proven they cannot hack it, larger than usual changes are necessary.
Now that Shaka has indicated he is now open to using the transfer portal on some level, I am amazed that some people think he should bring in four or five transfers for next year. That is not going to happen.
Shaka knows better than any of us just how much he needs an effective big man. That is bound to be his top priority. But, those just don't grow on trees and the good bigs all have multiple suitors each year.
He also has to find a way to give Nigel James some rest. Either a back-up point guard or a combo guard who can play on the ball for limited stretches is the second priority. Which way he goes probably depends on what is happening with Sean Jones. If Jones wants to come back in a back-up role to NJ, Shaka may well be ok with that. If not, then he has to find a combo guard transfer who can play starter minutes and shoot effectively.
That's probably the end of the transfer list for next year. Yes, a really good wing would be nice, but I just can't see Shaka going that deep into the transfer pool in what is, for all practical purposes, his first time out.

It's not complicated.
Nigel, Royce and Adrien have already shown considerable improvement in-season. It's reasonable for them to take another leap this offseason. And unlike guys like Tre, Sean, Zaide, etc., they've already shown they can compete at this level.
The reason this team is not winning games is because the junior class is a complete zero and the senior class are a couple of role players miscast as impact guys who have not played well.
Yes, guys like Sheek and Egbuonu are unknowns but it shouldn't be surprising if they help this team win next year.
And as for the portal, are only highly-paid stars available? That's a narrow view of what is available in the portal. You don't have to break the bank to find really good players and really good fits.
And that's one of the reason Shaka specifically mentioned data/metrics - what are the skillsets that can best fill the needs of this team that the returnees, redshirts, and incoming freshman don't have.
Someone doesn't have to be a star to to be a good player and significantly impact winning.

It's reality. There is zero guarantee that we retain ANY player on the roster. Teams will absolutely come for Nigel James. If you prioritize keeping him, you have less available for others. This isn't a zero sum game.
Furthermore, guys have to agree to come. They will want money, and they will want guaranteed playing time.
Sounds really cool and simple to just say, 'grab some really good players from the portal'.
Literally, every team will be doing that exact same thing. Marquette isn't exempt from losing players, nor is it a destination that every kid will want to play at. FURTHERMORE, Prior success is not a guarantee of future results. A bunch of people here are clamoring for player x or player y. But a lot of those guys are playing low major ball, and when they move up no one knows if the success continues.
That's all I'm saying. There are zero guarantees.
I don't care which of the three bottom 5 or so players (including Sean) on this team leave, but it has to happen. If they don't want to go, tough crap, Shaka needs to have that conversation.
From there, bring in at least two immediate impact starters to play alongside our young core. I could see one more mid-level, high upside transfer. That, coupled with the growth of NJ and Parham, should make us very competitive. Basically, the number of transfers doesn't matter, its all about quality. I'd much rather 2 starters than 4 unproven guys.
If we are only in for Kur Kuath-level transfers, it's almost certainly not going to work and Shaka will lose his job. Things are more dire than most here would like to admit. But its fixable!

That it's not an empty chair. Players can practice and help the underclassmen. They can be called upon, if needed, to perform a role.
To be clear, transfers are needed, but kicking players off the team and only carrying 12-13 scholarship players is a mistake.
Shaka has an idea of how many players he wants to fill out the roster. Cutting 5 players and only filling 2-3 is just leaving meat on the bone. If you have 15 scholarships, you should fill 15 scholarships.

If they bring in only 1-3 players and finish top half of the big east/tourney berth, I'd be ecstatic. Would gladly eat crow for that. I just do not think the roster as currently constructed is built to do that with so little changes. We'd be once again asking true freshman/RS freshman and sophomores to perform at a level they historically don't. I understand you and others disagree, but many were also confident going into this season they'd be much better than what has played out.
What happened to "get old, stay old" that was the foundational piece of Shaka's entire philosophy? Why are we now so confident in relying on youth to compete for top of the BE?
And preferably these hypothetical four would be in the rotation, whether that be starting or off the bench.

Would it? We don't know what those dollar figures are/will be. It's been hinted that the pay structure will be adapting. If they come back, I would bet the farm (not that anyone would have any way to prove/disprove) that Tre and Sean are nowhere near our top earners. If Shaka adjusts to something along the lines of your pay pro-rated to what your expected minutes are and Tre makes less than Sheek would that make you feel better? I feel like a comment that Shaka made 3-ish off-season's ago is continuing to get a lot of mileage.

IMO, you leave at least one spot open for a mid-year pickup - an international player or an early HS grad (what Shaka did for Walker this year). Maybe it's a Euro or Aussie who can contribute immediately too.
I'd be surprised if two of Tre, Caedin, Clark, and Jones are not gone next year. Would expect 2, would think 3 is more likely than 1 or 0. Whether Shaka then uses all 3 spots on portal players we'll see, but my guess is yes.
People constantly overrate the need for depth here. You need 7 good players to be a competitive team. My preference would be a rotation of 8.
We were a 2 seed two years ago with a sophomore Ben Gold 7th in minutes and a sophomore Sean Jones 8th in minutes, prior to getting injured for the year half way through the season. Nobody past those guys played more than 10 minutes per game, and Kolek missed a number of games late in the season with injury as well. We were running a 6 man rotation for a while. The year before that we won double Big East titles with freshman Sean Jones 8th in mpg at 12. And people think Gold and Jones are "fat we should've cut" prior to their 4th year in the program, let alone years 1 and 2.
I've consistently brought up Villanova's two national title teams. 6 guys played 27+ mpg, Gillespie played 14, and nobody else was more than 12 on their second title team under Wright, and their first title under Wright they had an 8 man rotation.
Florida won a national title last year with 6 players over 20 mpg, one player just under 15 mpg, and nobody else above 12. They basically played 7. You can go on and on looking at how deep national title teams' rotations are. Some are deeper, but most are 7 or 8.
You don't need 15 Big East rotational players to be competitive in college basketball. The idea that we need to completely flip the roster is so far from the truth. Nigel and Royce should be two of the best offensive players in the Big East next year. Stevens is a proven 3 point shooter, and I trust we'll see an improvement defensively and going to the hoop. He's definitely a rotational Big East player. If you get 3 Big East rotational level players, you can easily find Ben Gold/Sean Jones sophomore year level of production from one of Sheek, Egbuonu, Philips, Walker, Miletic, or Owens.
Quote from: jfp61 on February 19, 2026, 08:13:31 AMHonestly.... this speach was not good...
Really, the issue with this roster is the lack of Sean Jones? Sean Jones, who made worse when he was playing, that Sean jones?
And the focus is on retention? Of which players? If you are focusing on retaining all, you're doing something wrong.
This staff is poor at self evaluations.
Your inability to grasp any of this is pretty remarkable. Kudos, man.
I've been as critical as anyone of Shaka this season, and found what I felt was his pride and stubbornness with roster building incredibly frustrating in November and December. But this is about as clear a mea culpa as a guy like Shaka will confess in a presser.
The issue is obviously not Sean Jones, it's what directly preceded him talking about Sean Jones: "This year, to be 100% honest,
we had some older guys we felt could do more...and they haven't. But the young guys have really stepped forward in a major way." I don't know how much clearer he needs to be for you. Acknowledging Sean's injury is Shaka being a nice guy and highlighting a guy dealing with injury not contributing as opposed to outwardly lambasting the terrible play of Chase Ross, poor play of Ben Gold, vanishing act of Zaide Lowery, irrelevance of Tre Norman. He will literally never do that, ever.
OF COURSE the focus is on our retention of young players...how is that not something you comprehend. He literally says his "evolving" starts with keeping Nigel, Adrien, Royce, and Damarius in the program. "But certainly around them, we have to look at what's best for Marquette basketball and our roster...and I'm excited about that. How we can improve our team in different ways." Like is he speaking a different language here than you?
In my opinion, I think Sean, Tre, and one of Caedin (ideally) or Josh leaves the program: add in Zaide and that leaves 4 openings. I personally think we bring in 3 meaningful contributors to this team and maybe a Nash-type flier as a 4th since we know Shaka likes doing that.
Nigel, Royce, Adrien, Damarius, Michael, Alex, Sheek, Ian, portal guard like Minessale, portal wing like a Leon Bond, portal big man is a team that gives me a LOT of optimism. Thinking that 2026-2027 roster is a bottom dweller is crazy to me. We're led by freshmen and sophomores currently playing blind and with one hand tied behind our back and are taking Nova to the brink twice, St. John's to the brink, Seton Hall to the brink twice, running mid-tier Butler and Creighton out of the gym. Not seeing our growth and projecting a damn good team next year now that we're portaling makes no sense IMO.
Quote from: Vander Blue Man Group on February 19, 2026, 08:19:11 AMIt's laughable that is what you took away from his comments and it's very difficult to take you seriously.
Yup. It's amazing that people watched that and came out of it with anything else.
He is going to keep James and Parham (and likely Stevens) come hell or high water, and he is then going to bolster the roster by using the portal.
Any other take is just kvetching for the sake of it. Jeesh.
Quote from: Pakuni on February 19, 2026, 12:30:33 PMIs it crazy to suggest the quality of transfers matters more than the quantity?
Two high-quality transfers, preferably a big and a 3-and-D wing who are capable of starting for most good P5 programs, would help this team far more than four depth pieces.
I don't think you necessarily need big money guys. A big like Jones or Traore at Butler would instantly improve our projected line-up for next year (James, Stevens, Parham, not sure who would be a the 3. Maybe Owens). Neither are stars, neither cost Butler a lot, but they'd be a significant upgrade from what we are looking at for experience at the 5 next year (assuming one or both come back) and help Sheek develop. I don't think we need to buy a Tarris Reed, Jr. or Hunter Dickenson type at the 5...but I wouldn't be opposed.
Quote from: muwarrior69 on February 19, 2026, 12:16:16 PMAre you kidding? These guys can't win games now. What makes you think they'll win games next season. The in coming class has yet to prove they can play high major D1 ball.
Justin Lewis, Oso and Greg Elliott couldn't win games in 2020-21. Yet Shaka surrounded those players with quality transfers and they made the tournament the next year.
Don't you think that putting some quality around the core of Royce, NJ and Adrien can result in a better team? I sure think so...

James, Parham and Stevens will be priorities for retention. If I had to guess, Phillips and the redshirts would be next. I don't see Owens as being at the same level in terms of priority. Great athlete but plays like Poppin Fresh.
Quote from: MurphysTillClose on February 19, 2026, 01:27:29 PMIf they bring in only 1-3 players and finish top half of the big east/tourney berth, I'd be ecstatic.
First, what changes the equation to me is Nigel, Royce, and Adrien. They are proving with each game they can be counted on next season and beyond.
Royce will be an upper classmen. Nigel might be pre-season All Big East 1st or 2nd team next season as a sophomore. And Adrien has shown a lot as well.
For me, that's a very nice core to start with.
In regard to the portal, I think we do need to balance out the classes with a couple of one-year guys that will be seniors, and maybe a guy with 2 years left. If Sean and Tre are both gone, this team will have no seniors so that is a spot where you can add that experience.
I'd like to see them add 3 guys via the portal. A starting 5 with one year of eligibility left, a starting wing (one or two years left), and a combo guard (one or two years left).
Starters:
C - Portal addition
F - Royce
G/F - Portal Addition
SG - Adrien
PG - Nigel
Bench:
Portal addition (combo guard)
Sheek
Owens
Egbuonu
Plus, Phillps, Miletic, Walker
I get that the bench is unproven but I see depth and upside. To me, I don't see why this hypothetical squad wouldn't be competitive.
Quote from: Billy Hoyle on February 19, 2026, 01:59:16 PMIMO, you leave at least one spot open for a mid-year pickup - an international player or an early HS grad (what Shaka did for Walker this year). Maybe it's a Euro or Aussie who can contribute immediately too.
With 15 spots, I agree that keeping one spot open for flexibility makes a lot of sense.
Quote from: wadesworld on February 19, 2026, 02:02:48 PMI'd be surprised if two of Tre, Caedin, Clark, and Jones are not gone next year.
Yep, basically what I just posted and have been repeating.

You're welcome to hypothesize any win total you want, that roster ^ is closer to a protected seed in the tournament than a Crown participant if you ask me.

Ethan Johnston is the #195 player in his class according to the 247 composite and #225 according to on3.
The rankings aren't always right and there are times a lower-rated prospect comes in and has an immediate impact, but those tend to be exceptions. Expecting him to come in and help the team next year seems a tough ask. He's more likely a long-term swing on upside.
Yes, I understand that expectations are relatively low for Ethan Johnston due to the various low rankings, but to completely ignore him and not even include his name on the team as a bench player next year doesn't feel right to me due to his athleticism as a 6'7" wing player

That's not a quote. A quote is something Shaka actually says. This was a UConn piece where they paraphrased an old Shaka quote, the same one that gets repeated around here a lot, that is from approx. 3 off-season's ago (I can't remember if it was after Justin left early or after O-Max left early). Further, Shaka has had actual real quotes more recently than six weeks ago that very strongly indicate that a change in philosophy is coming. "What those guys have done through the combination of their high school recruiting, retention and transfer recruiting is they've kept their talent and their culture at a very high level. And that gives you a chance to win."
And again, there are more recent quotes, which is why this thread is titled what it is, why are you ignoring those and focusing on what a UConn article from 6 weeks ago is saying? Things have clearly changed.

It's in the article. This is basic journalism. Just because someone wasn't directly quoted doesn't mean they didn't say it to the reporter. That part would've been omitted if he hadn't, but instead you're assuming the writer just dug up some old quote from three years ago. And if that were the case, why wouldn't he just use the original quote? Again, just not how this stuff works.
And it's clear from the article that his thinking had already changed, like you quoted. Last night he said 'We decided for the past four years not to take D-1 transfers' and he's changed his mind about that. That's not different in any substantial way from "I think the UConns, the Purdues, the Michigan States, in terms of sustaining success from year to year,

Let me break it down for you -
Shaka kept a bunch of players who are not up to standard on the roster the past couple of years because of his philosophy (rgv).
When the initial crop of players graduated, we were left with players who were misevaluated and he thought they would be bigger contributors.
Because of that, we're going through an abysmal season.

I hope they do too. It's just that considering the talent on this team, good transfers would be making top 5 money here if we only got two. It's a big change in philosophy is all.
And while I'm not fully on board with Rocky's comment about only replacing Zaide, I do think there are some assumptions being made about how many changes will happen. Back to the subject at hand: Many of you folks are over-analyzing the Portal issue. Coach Smart either goes to the Portal or he bets on Caedin Hamilton and a group of redshirts/incoming freshmen to carry his water next year.
That path is a sure ticket to unemployment in 2027!
Marquette's needs are simple: depth at guard and a center that's a beast. Our season has fallen apart this year because (a) Zaide, Tre and Sean never became anything close to what Coach Smart had expected; and, (b) Our center(s) are better equipped to play in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association than the Big East.
Our core is basically very good. Keep Nigel, Royce and Adrian, work with Damarius and our incoming and we have the foundation for a good team next year. But without Portal depth at guard and center, we're headed for another disaster.
Let's see what Coach Smart does. In the meantime, the sooner this season ends, the better.

We've been told guys won't leave because they make too much money. Yet, for whatever reason, Lowery did. If Shaka is so principled that he's willing to sacrifice his career to continue his approach, then he'll retire at the end of the season. If he wants to keep coaching, he'll make room on the roster. IMO, he'd have nothing to be ashamed of if he changes his approach. He gave that approach a better go than any other D-1 coach.
Again, Shaka saying the program will "evolve" includes the payment structure for players, not just being very active in the portal. Everything is changing, it already is.

What makes you confident that "Zaide chose to leave"? I think it looks like he was told that he was losing his starting position to Stevens and he didn't take it well. So, he was benched and didn't travel with the team for a game. Then, he continued to pout (and was perhaps a negative presence within the team) and was cut. I suppose it is possible that he was told to man up and wouldn't/couldn't do that, and rather quit, but even that doesn't really feel like he "chose to leave."
As for Sean, it feels likely to me that, following his injury and Nigel's emergence, he was told that he wouldn't get his starting spot back. He seems to have accepted that and so remains a valued part of the team, just as he was during his recovery from his knee injury. That said, I think he realizes that the team next year will be Nigel's and he will, at best, be a back up. For me, I hope that Shaka sees Sean's limitations and injury vulnerability and realizes that he will want a back up point guard that brings different skills (truth is, Sean is small like Nigel, quick like Nigel but has looser handles, lower game sense and worse shooting; the one advantage I'd say that Sean has over Nigel is defense, but that could change too). I'll admit that I'd like to see Sean move on, as I think it would be better for Sean (just like Jamal Cain playing his final year at Oakland) and for MU.

I'll keep hammering this drum - the bolded is not enough. A beast center for sure, I agree. But we also need a beast wing. And from there a quality depth piece or two would be nice.
Tough to see us shelling out the kind of cash that would take but in my opinion that's the bare minimum to be in legit contention next year.

I expect we'll add 4 players, at least 3 transfers. Sean, Tre, & Caedin will go. Expect a big, a combo guard, & another starting caliber player.

Return 3 starters, bring in 3 more capable of starting level minutes. Owens, Sheek, Philips, etc. battle it out for the remaining minutes.

So you're saying that Power 5 School A contacts P5 School B - in the middle of a season - to ask if Player X might want to transfer?
Yes

Interesting. I knew schools were talking to agents/parents of kids they hoped to get as transfers. It didn't dawn on me that a representative of a school would call his counterpart at a rival school and basically ask, "Mind if we poach one of your players?"

I had the same initial thought, 82: "wow that seems incredibly brazen and stupid of them". But it was more presented as them asking if Marquette wanted Damarius back next season because they had interest in him if we didn't. We told them yes, we want him back.

You're making this even more ridiculous. If Syracuse wants him, they will offer him a package he can't refuse. End of story.
I just don't see Owens being in demand among Power 5 programs. He's not even a starter on a very poor MU team. If he's back, I'll be a bit concerned if MU views him as a starter going into next season. He hasn't really proven much to date.

But, yeah.. one 'good' path for him would be .. go to a mid major and get major run. Just go absolutely crazy. Then back to a HM for big $ as a senior.

Players are free to transfer any year they want. As others have mentioned and everyone knows interested schools will reach out through back channels to gauge interest. Or, players will reach out letting schools know they are going to move on.
There is zero reason for a school to call another coach to see if they are going to "cut" a player.
Plus, there is zero reason for a coach to tell anyone they are going to "cut" a player. It would be a terrible look if Owens heard from Syracuse that Shaka wants him out.

Absolutely. His post is flat out garbage. No school asks for permission anyway. There is no protocol. Whoever his "source" is clueless. In addition, no school speaks for the players. Players can do whatever they want.

You're are missing the whole point of the discussion. I and others are discrediting a ridiculous story devoid of logic and support. I was simply cutting to the chase to summarize the transfer situation.
Basically I was saying if Syracuse had targeted him as an attractive transfer they could have a compelling package put together to present him the second he hits the portal.
Even in some bizzarro world they did reach out to Shaka, and in a cocaine fog Shaka said he was cutting him loose, what would Syracuse gain?
If Syacuse knew he was going to transfer but has not announced or entered the portal, they'd end up working through back channels anyways.

No, I understand the overall point. I just thought that one piece of your response was ludicrous.
I've disagreed with onepost a fair amount this year, but he typically has had some good information.
I'm not going to pretend I understand the intricacies of the transfer portal and if this might happen. But I don't think it's impossible.
I have a general observation. Is it a stretch to think these back channels aren't being tested? We all know there have been violations in college sports for decades, some say John Wooden pushed the envelope all the time and even engaged in NCAA violation-level tactics. School have been placed on probation, coaches and players have been censured, etc. etc. For Syracuse to reach out to MU to inquire about a player doesn't seem like an impossibility to me. Just because we have new rules with NIL and the transfer portal, who's to say they're not being violated?
Talk amongst yourselves.
Thanks

For sure DO might have gotten an offer from Cuse. He might even go. But I doubt an offer was made without his knowledge, or that he just told someone at Marquette to take the call and say no thanks.

Danny Hurley a few times talked about and referenced his players being tampered with during the season (60 minutes interview he mentioned it)
It happens all the time because the NCAA does not enforce tampering violations. Tampering in some cases is also very hard to prove.
To think it doesn't happen is pretty asinine IMHO.

Oh, back channels aren't being tested, they are 100% active, up and running. It's just regular operating procedure at any major program that has intent to be involved with the portal.

So Syracuse may have reached out to MU about whether DO may be "available"?
No clue how these things work, and I doubt Autry called Shaka, but with basically everyone tampering all the time, wouldn't you rather have a program that might be interested in a player on your roster reaching out to you rather than trying to go behind your back? Maybe some designated portal scout/recruiter on one staff reaches out to one on the team's staff of a player they might be interested and says, "Hey, DO doesn't see a ton of minutes with you. Are you happy with him? Is he happy at MU? If you know there will be a parting of ways, can you get us in touch with his people?"
Again, no idea. But I'd think if I was running a program I'd know other programs are probably sneaking around players on my roster, and might appreciate that approach.
Quote from: romey on February 22, 2026, 02:03:28 PMSo Syracuse may have reached out to MU about whether DO may be "available"?
Reaching out to MU would not be a back channel communication. That is the crux of the argument.
I would never say onepost didn't hear the rumor, but whoever started it doesn't understand the college situation. They think college is like the NBA and its like the Knicks called the Bucks to ask if Giannis is available.
Rules are still being written.

To clarify, it's definitely not Autry calling Shaka asking for his blessing, but rather backend staffer contacting backend staffer. To my knowledge.

Not that this is definitive confirmation that Damarius Owens stays per se, but MUBB's social media just dropped this hype video:
https://www.instagram.com/reel/DVFBwVpDnvO/?igsh=bHk3cnQyOTYycTQ1
It starts with Shaka talking about a "group of four" that is extremely close and connected, then proceeds to show clips of Damarius, Royce, Adrien, and Nigel. If I had to guess based on this video alone, it seems to me like Shaka intends on keeping this group together.
I don't think anyone here doubts that "tampering" is going on all the time. Someone representing School A calls an agent or parent or even the player himself from School B to express interest? Like it or not (and I vote not), that no doubt happens every freakin' day.
It's the idea that a representative of School A calls his counterpart at School B to inquire about possibly poaching a player from School A that seems a little out there. To me, anyway.

It's completely out there.
Let's not rule out anyone on the Syracuse staff may be poking around for another team besides Syracuse for next year.
Let's also not rule out the concept/idea of Shaka/MU hyping up one of their guys that they know will be moving on to allow said player to get better offers if/as he departs.
Not saying it's happening in this case, but I could see it happening with someone like Damarius if Shaka and player decide to move on.
It would be more difficult to pull off with Caedin :o

Al and Dean Smith were friends and if my memory is correct Dean referred a player, who I can't remember as well, to Al
and he ended up playing for Marquette.

But zero chance that would be part of the calculus for a hype video like the one that was just shared.
