Ughhhhh. Ya...olympic skiing on a torn acl seems kinda difficult.
I admire the competitor Vonn obviously is, but that couldn't have been much worse of an ending for her and clear now she can't compete at this level anymore. Hope she's ok and recovers soon and enjoys retirement.
On the other hand, congratulations to her teammate Breezy J on first U.S. gold! Not favored and had to sit and watch 30 others. Very cool!

Worst Olympics boxing decision ever may have been Tyrell Biggs over Francesco Damiani in 1984. The hometown crowd in Los Angeles actually bood the decision. Then, when Damiani raised a glove and acknowledged the crowd, they cheered wildly. Interestingly, the exact same thing happened at the pre-Olympics exhibition match a few months earlier.

That was like Tiger Woods going in the 18th green at the US Open with a three shot lead, then putting four balls in the water to lose. But unlike Tiger, the kid was way too confident and when he missed that first 4 quad, it changed. Then he fell, missed another 4 quad and fell again. Maybe a more simple run would have done it. Probably cost him $50 million in endorsements. He wins, he is on Wheaties, commercials, everything. Was face of US Olympics and took a dump. That TV overhear was brutal, made him look like a spoiled brat. Only 21, hope he gets over the loss.

I'm sure the Canadian has already apologized.
He's not necessarily wrong about not being sent to Beijing in 2022, he was second at the National Championships and normally the first three would go. But they sent the fourth place finisher Jason Brown, I think on the basis that Brown had international experience on the senior level, it was somewhat controversial at the time. Nathan Chen was the big name that year ( he had gone into the 2018 Olympics with high expectations and also failed to medal after an awful short program). Going there, with no medal expectations, might well have helped him deal with the Olympic pressure.
I thought that he was quite gracious in the interview afterwards, after a crushing disappointment at his young age.

Goaltending is Canada's Achilles heel, which makes them beatable. They've played elite team defense so far to suppress scoring chances against much less talented teams, but the US has the firepower - especially if Matthews and Jack Hughes show up - to create offense.
Canada is still a deserved favorite, but they can be beaten. These are basically the same teams that played to a dead heat in last year's Four Nations.

I don't know how to categorize this one. Men's Slalom skier, Mcgrath from Norway was the favorite and last skier. He was first after the first slalom run. He missed one of the first poles and his race was over. He went nuts and tossed his ski poles super far away and then ripped through a snow fence and walked off into the woods to vent.
Apparently, his grandfather, who he was very close with, passed away during the opening ceremony and he didn't know if he could ski but he knew his grandfather would want him to continue. Seeing it happen live without knowing this backstory changes the initial reaction.

According to a former vendor of mine, who had a cup of coffee with 3 NHL teams and played a decade in the AHL, there is a reasonably significant difference in visibility, peripherally. Hence why even though they wear a cage/full shield in juniors and obviously college, they drop to the half shield once they turn pro. Getting a stick or puck to face is infrequent enough to not outweigh the improved visibility/face feel.
He had daughters playing HS hockey at the time and said, in his opinion, the difference in speed of the game and not needing to keep your head on a swivel as much (due to no checking/hitting) made the difference in visibility less of a concern.
I know some chalk it up to the macho image of the NHL back to its pre-helmet history and I've seen some comments on misogyny/differing expectations of male vs female athletes on the difference in standards on helmets. But I thought it was reasonable take/perspective from an intelligent guy who played Ivy League hockey and who was a middle aged parent with kids in the sport he cared deeply about, not just some aging "back in my day" jock

the funny thing is she's a "comeback story" at the age of 20. Retired after 2022. A couple years later decided she wasn't done. Her energy was fun to watch.
Her dead left China after being oppressed. They tried to recruit back but they said no. Makes her gold that much better.

Not yet. FWIW, Canada was losing 2-1 midway through their QF game before Crosby got hurt, and they rallied to tie and then win without him. With or without him, Canada is formidable ... although, as we've seen, this notion that Canada is some unbeatable force has been dispelled.
The American team obviously is loaded with talent. Not only won't it be a miracle if they win Sunday, it really won't be much of an upset.

I think it would be a significant upset but hope I'm wrong. Unless their top 4 guys are gassed from the Finland game. But we are much better than prior USA hockey teams.
Crosby is still really good and very important to 🇨🇦.

That was sweet!
Omg what a move!
What a start, and they hung on. Incredible intensity!
Matthews absolutely should have blasted that puck 7 feet from the net. We've overpassed twice. Unload when you have the opportunity.
I also think we can do a bit better with the counterattack when the Canadians are over aggressive.
Sweet Jesus.
Can't give them a 5 on 3. Fk.
Unreal kill there.
Ughhhh. You knew it was a matter of time. Canada has dominated this period. Need to punch back. NOW.
Omg! Both posts!
Poor 2nd for the boys, but an incredible 1st kept us in it. We are a 3rd period team, but clearly Canada made adjustments. Knew Canada was going to get one, now we need to keep up the forechecking and stay in front of the offensive line.

And that was a perfect shot. I thought we'd get more momentum from the 5 on 3 kill. I think we're gonna need a fluke goal to get this one, but it's still tied and anything can happen.

The freckle-faced college lads from America, none of them making even a dime playing hockey, were given little chance to even compete against the grizzled, state-sponsored pros of Communist Canada.
But the wholesome Americans prevailed!

Holy sh1t. OK, so the stuffed animals.. Tina and Milo are 'stoats'. Muggsy probably knows all about them, but I didn't. They appear to be small mammals.

I think its kind of fun/ironic/amusing that the win was very much fueled by an insane performance by Hellebuyck...who has spent his entire 12 year pro career (both AHL and NHL) in Winnipeg, arguably the MOST Canadian city in the NHL, not a cosmopolitan city like Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal. You could also argue Calgary or Edmonton, but Alberta is Alberta.
Also, not that the game (or the Olympics in general) needed more emotion, but not just skating with Gadreau's sweater after the game, but bringing out his kids for the picture on the ice. Absolutely WRECKED ME. Seeing Matthew Tkachuk, a legendary heel/crap stirrer, sweetly smiling and waving off ice and then seeing it was at Werenski cruising in holding Gadreau's daugher, and the Tkachuk skating with her after. Just unreal stuff.
Saw another post mentioning how calm and smiley the kids were with Larkin, Werenski, Tkachuk, and others cause they've known and been close to them their whole lives, especially in the 18 months since their dad passed. Special stuff and speaks a lot to the relationship that the US team has.

That may have been the greatest sporting event of my lifetime. I wasn't born for the Miracle on Ice. Personally the 2003 E8 game vs Kentucky was #1. I'm also a tennis guy so there have been a slew of matches that I rank very high, including Alcaraz/Sinner last year at the French. But from an emotional standpoint, outside the MU thumping of Kentucky in '03, I don't think I've been moved quite like yesterday morning. I cried several times and completely lost it when the Gaudreau toddlers were on the ice with the players.

You greatly overestimate how much the average sports fan cares. They won't have "stink" on them come next NHL season much less the rest of their lives unless they continuing stumping for political causes. The Venm diagram of people of who were most bothered by everything involving the men's team and people who were not normally NHL fans or followed hockey because of Heated Rivalry is basically a circle...or they were Canadian.
It's not an endorsement of anything or pretending Groupie Kash wasn't cringey, but rather acknowledgement of how overblown controversies get when they break containment of "normal fans" and into the current social media zeitgeist...and how quickly it goes away when those social media trend followers move on to something else
