Glenn Hall, who pioneered the modern "butterfly" style in protecting the net and played goalie in a record 502 consecutive regular-season games - all without wearing a mask - died on Wednesday. He was 94.
Known as "Mr. Goalie," Hall won a Stanley Cup with the 1961 Blackhawks and was named a first-team NHL All-Star seven times.

His consecutive game streak ended when he hurt his back bending over to tie his skate. It is estimated he took 250-300 stitches to his face over his career. Those goalies without masks were tough guys.
On a related note, it is beyond me why no one plays with a mouth guard in the NHL.
