Title: Remembrance
Post by: MU82 on January 06, 2026, 10:07:45 AM
Five years ago today, domestic terrorists attempted a violent coup in Washington. They brutally attacked police officers, broke into and defaced the U.S. Capitol, searched for congresspeople to hurt, and threatened to hang the vice president.

The courageous actions of the police, some civilians, the Secret Service, and the vice president helped restore order - and made it possible for Congress to ratify the results of the free and fair election that had taken place two months earlier.

It was one of the darkest days in the history of our constitutional republic. But our nation is strong, and democracy prevailed.

I am not sure it did.

That did 10x more to shake my faith in my fellow Americans than all of COVID.

Agree completely. Not only have the goon squad members been pardoned, but quite a few people consider them the heroes. At the time, I thought that the only silver lining to the dark cloud of that day was that Orange Jesus was "done for" politically.

My "faith in my fellow Americans" was present then, but now? Too many people celebrating the restraints of the constitution being shredded and celebrating fascism.

I wish that I could look at this day as just  an isolated incident of a few extremists. But we know that this wasn't just the world's largest gathering of dentists, but that the are  millions of dentist sympathizers

May all of the Capitol Police officers, especially the four who lost their lives, who defended the Capitol and American Democracy, rest in peace and be remembered forever for their heroism.

The White House launched a January 6th webpage today:
https://www.whitehouse.gov/j6/

"In truth, it was the Democrats who staged the real insurrection by certifying a fraud-ridden election, ignoring widespread irregularities, and weaponizing federal agencies to hunt down dissenters, all while Pelosi's own security lapses invited the chaos they later exploited to seize and consolidate power. This gaslighting narrative allowed them to persecute innocent Americans, silence opposition, and distract from their own role in undermining democracy."

THIS is an absolute masterpiece of projection. I've called out scoopers-one in particular-for projection when they call opponents who have exposed their insane BS "unhinged", but they are laughably inept compared to this worthy addition to The Guiness Book of World Records.

You're right!  Well...only a little bit of it, honestly. Democracy has not prevailed. It just took a while before that became clear.

Disagree. Maybe hanging on by its fingernails, but not dead yet.

Anyway, it's important to remember dates that will live in infamy, such as Dec. 7, Sept. 11 and Jan. 6. Dark, dark days for our constitutional republic, but still we endure.

Thank goodness for the brave posters who were willing to violate the scoop rules to prevent our slide into fascism.  They're the real heroes.

If we get sent on a vacation, we should all get together somewhere. Thoughts as to where? Maybe the Capitol Building? Or at a Pickleball tourney?

There's no way this wasn't going to be political.

But it is a shame that as a country...1) it got to that, 2) was encouraged, and that 3) the people that stormed the Capitol aren't held responsible.
