Title: Sean Jones- coaching salary?
Post by: GoFastAndWin on January 04, 2026, 08:07:03 PM
I really feel for Sean Jones. While he is clearly not a major difference maker, even when 100% healthy, he deserved better than the fate he's been dealt by the basketball gods.

Anyhow, Sean learned a lot about the college game while basically coaching from the bench the last year and a half.

What are the logistics of upgrade-paying Sean next year to be an assistant coach, practice with the team, and even be available for spot minutes during games?

Would this be legal under the (lack of) rules in this uncharted new world of college sports? I haven't researched anything, but my guess is of course he would count as a scholarship player if he sees playing time, but maybe you could pay him an upgraded salary via the University as an assistant coach, thus saving NIL money. I would obviously guess you could gain a scholarship if he agreed not to play in games. If you significantly upgraded his pay, would he even agree to that? It would be a pioneering move I would think, as college basketball is concerned. And it would be a head start on a possibly lucrative coaching career for the young man. There's always an assistants' carousel each Spring, so why not designate him a playing assistant?

Sean is the kind of guy you want to come back, even if his body is making it difficult on him. Just curious what the rules allow. Ready for my beating by JayBee and others 😂 😆.

I hope you didn't put too much thought into this.

Ok. I guess I should've just started a new poll.

Should Sean Jones return?

I guess I'm just hoping MU (in all facets of the program) decides to get creative, within the rules, to move forward from this trying year, and field a competitive roster in this new environment.

There was talk from Shaka last year that Sean will be an excellent coach some day.

I was having fun with the idea of MU paying him as an assistant next year, where he's earning more than he's earning as a player this year. With the idea of keeping NIL payroll available. He would practice with the team, as his speed is excellent preparation on both ends. He would make more "coaching" here than any NIL offers he gets elsewhere to play.

😆
How many suits (sweat or traditional) do you see on most benches? You think Sean's not worthy one of those higher priced seats?

Also, idk, maybe I'm undervaluing what he would get to play elsewhere. 🤷

I'm not saying he should be the very 1st assistant.

I guess I'm guilty of the Shaka-Caedin reward effort syndrome.

I think you mean save direct payment / "revenue sharing" money, but that's anon-issue as we're nowhere near the max.

Put another way, this ideas r no goods.

I could see how my username in the context of this post could invite that thought. 😆

Think more along the lines of Richard Dreyfus as "Trotter" 🐴 in Let It Ride!

Thanks, JayBee.

Oh and it should be "that's a non-issue" not "anon- issue". (Sorry, but it's fun to police the grammar police) 😆

Fair, but it was an auto-correct issue. My phone is quite... sticky. #Pawz
