I actually feel pretty badly for Ben. He was a part of the Big East Titles, he was a part of the Sweet 16 run, he was a full time starter last year, and to top it off he's over here in a different country than his own, sitting through 4 years of RGV! RGV! RGV! and yet he is sent to the bench after starting all of last year. Not to mention he's been one of the few actual performers on the team. Averaging near 9 PPG and 7 RPG, he's been fine. Yet he's the Senior benched and forced to go do a post game after a loss. I feel for him right now.

Bad way to end a good run he was a part of. Bittersweet. He did step up more than usual tonight. Starting Hamilton over him is just flat out disrespectful.
3 pointers aside, he looked really good tonight. Moved well and made a bunch of good plays on both ends. Looked like it came pretty natural to him. I cant see why he doesnt play like this more consistantly.

Agree. Ben had a good game. 8-8 FT line. 19 points. Hamilton is just a huge miss by Shaka.
Ben is a good kid. As is Chase. Both seemed a lot happier when they were lower in the pecking order. "Stars in their role" if you will. RGV calls for incremental role elevation every year, but sometimes a guy just fits his role and is happy to just stay in it. And that's ok.
Ben played well. It's an injustice that Caedin starts over him.
The difference in the game score was the first mins Caedin was in the game.
Ben played his damn heart out. He altered a unnatural carnal knowledgeton of shots tonight and played hard af.
Ben was not the problem. 36 minutes, 19/7. He made his lay ups.
And we found what will put Caedin on the bench. An early shot clock 3 attempt. He only played 5 minutes.

I've heard from people that Ben is the most popular player on campus because he's a good kid who is visible on campus and open and friendly with fellow students, not acting like an entitled athlete. Ben, as a player, is best suited to be the fourth option on a tourney team. He's being forced to do more than his skillset allows, and he's doing his best. That he is one of the two guys tasked with carrying this team is an indictment of Shaka and his roster construction.
So ... an early 3 point attempt got
Caedin benched ? Not his AWFUL and inept attempt at playing BE basketball for two months ? Not the obvious fact that he is
- at best - a Horizon League player?
Given how lost Shaka is this season that may be correct. Wow.

I am a Ben Gold fan, of course he has limitations and is not a future NBA player but he has always given great effort and helped MU win many games.
I will say calling him a "kid" is disrespectful. He is 22 year old professional basketball player who might earn more than you. Are Wemby, Banchero, Holmgren, Sengun, Dylan Harper, Jalen Johnson, Dereck Lively, etc. "kids"?
These "kids" fought the battle to be recognized as the professionals that they are and have been.

Ben made every shot that was inside the three point line. It's too bad he's hung out around there so much given that he scores pretty effectively around the hoop

And yet he still got sent to the bench after starting 34 of 34 games as a Junior. It's a petty benching from Shaka. Petty as hell.
Caedin Hamilton is shooting 39% from the field as a center that doesn't hardly ever shoot 3s. Just absolutely disgusting. 39%!!!!!
I know you love to knit pick any post you can that you don't agree with, and you hate the word embarrassing, but this is embarrassing. He just forgot to include "good" when searching the meaning of "kid" while in AI mode in google search.

I don't think any college team can win at a high level without the 3 point shot, but I do think MU's best path to being competitive is eliminating the 3pt attempts. I don't think MU is just in a 3pt shooting funk, I think we are who we are.

Talking about the fact that Ben as a Senior gets the demotion from the starting lineup while Caedin, maybe the worst player to ever wear the MU uniform, gets to hear his name called and his hometown announced in the starting lineup every game.
4 minutes is 4 minutes too much, but yet we are ok starting in a hole every game for whatever reason and throwing Caedin Hamilton at the center circle every night because he claps a lot for his teammates.

We saw what Ben gave us for 4 years. He doesn't deserve to start either. But RGV baby!
This team needs to practice shooting and rebounding period. 3-point shots, free throws and lay ups. This is the worst shooting team in Marquette history. Hamilton and Norman should be benched. Only players who can score and rebound should play. Marquette has been a weak rebounding team under Shaka. When you can't shoot and don't rebound you lose period.
Shaka at the beginning of the year talking about how Caedin "earned his spot" and the last spot being up for grabs for Royce and Ben is just the icing on the cake. Caedin didn't earn a thing, and if he had a good camp to make them think that, he certainly isn't earning it now.
4 minutes, 0-2 from the field, 3 fouls, incompetent defense. 46 EGBs. Next start...earned!

Yeah I don't get Shaka's infatuation with starting Hamilton at all. He must be the EGB record holder in practice. Just by principle alone it's disrespectful to bench your senior who is clearly heaps better.

Not a single good 3-point shooter that plays meaningful minutes. Ben's taken the most on the team (70) and made 19. Wish he'd cut that in half and be around the basket more.

Shaka would have loved to play Caedin ~20 minutes but MU is essentially in free fall every second he is on the court now. As long as Caedin is part of the rotation, the ceiling for this team is basically the floor. Basically every other team in the world at all levels starts games with their best five (by position). Does Shaka know something that everyone else doesn't? Is there some advantage to be gained by opening games with your worst player on the court?
This isn't like a debate between starting two similarly skilled players, or starting a guy who excels in one facet of the game versus a guy who excels in another. It's about starting an incompetent player over one who's competent. It just makes no sense.

So it's best to have a team of players incapable of taking advantage of mismatches. Making Gold incapable of exploiting a size advantage doesn't seem like smart basketball to me. Glad you like it.
By my very rudimentary calculations, Marquette is 8-6 in winning the tip this year giving them a very small increase chance in winning.

Seriously, saying you feel bad for Ben Gold (even though plenty of people, probably the OP, were saying play Chase, the freshman, and pull the redshirts and play them just a couple weeks ago) because he got "benched" for Caedin Hamilton (despite Caedin not being the guy that replaced Ben in the starting lineup) on a night he played 36 minutes to Caedin's 4 is crazy. Never said that was bad. That's taking advantage of a slow or missed switch providing a driving lane, not a size mismatch. It is certainly better than Ben solely launching 3s. When a smaller player switches to Ben and cuts off the driving lane, MU does not and cannot take advantage. I understand emphasizing plays at the hope and 3s, but having a roster of guys who don't have the skill to post up or hit a pull-up is taking it a bit far IMO.
Quote from: wadesworld on December 31, 2025, 07:25:04 PMBut he had 3 fouls at the half and didn't play a second in the second half. Caedin wasn't in the game when SHU closed the game on a 13-0 run.
What happened to Zaide was a benching. Playing 36 minutes in a game is not being "benched."

lol guy, I'll beat you in either. 3 point shooting contest and/or pb singles. You're way younger than me, but happy to bet $$ on either. Don't talk about it, be about it.

No kidding you'd beat me at pickleball. I'm about 35 years away from even considering playing pickleball.

Yawn. I don't need a retired man's money.
Maybe 2026 you'll realize homophobic jokes aren't funny. Especially from a retired single dude.
She's mine.
Quote from: wadesworld on December 31, 2025, 07:28:50 PMThere are plenty here.
Not sure anyone is celebrating it. Many are pointing out the negative points of starting him over more deserving player(s).
But if you want to detract from the conversation about how this team could play at their best (not saying it would mean much more success other than scratching out a couple more wins vs the likes of Oklahoma, Dayton, Maryland etc.) and call people POS that is the way to do it.
Acting above the fray but stooping so low is not moral high ground. But sadly, this goes on, as the name caller said, during the winning seasons as well.

You saved me some time with this reply so I'll shift gears a bit. Despite Clark's offensive game resembling Hamilton, I'd like to see their minutes split for a few games, since Clark at the very least offers enough length on defense to block shots.

rim run Clark for some lobs. Maestro Shaka, nope. Let's go with Hamilton. He has good footwork.
Quote from: CountryRoads on December 30, 2025, 11:35:35 PMBen is a good kid. As is Chase. Both seemed a lot happier when they were lower in the pecking order. "Stars in their role" if you will. RGV calls for incremental role elevation every year, but sometimes a guy just fits his role and is happy to just stay in it. And that's ok.
This is a cause of some of this year's problems. Last year's core of Kam, Jop and Mitchell played together for three years, then you add Kolek and Oso for the two years before that. All consumed huge minutes. Not a lot of room then to expand your role if you are a senior or junior today.
So today you have a scenario where we find that yesterday's role players are not star players.

Serious accusations of the HC not doing his job. :(
