Title: Ross Not Start?
Post by: Heisenberg on December 21, 2025, 12:55:21 AM
He has been playing God awful the last four games.  He is 4-24 the last two games. And he looks worse than this terrible stat line.

A team's leading score simply cannot do this.

Ben Gold is no longer a starter.

Yes he's been awful but he's still the best overall player on the team. Seems pointless to take him out the SL. And start who? Owens  ? Norman? Get real. Ben on the other hand absolutely. Glad he doesn't play much now. Failure of a senior year

Winning with Ross and Gold is not happening. Getting minutes for anyone that has a future should be the priority. What's the difference between losing by 25 or 35? Play freshman and consider pulling redshirts.

Agree.  What has happened to Ross? He plays with zero confidence. Same with Lowery. This team has imp!oded. There's no senior leadership. Hell, I'd play James, stevens, Owens, Parham and Clark.

Who really cares if he starts or not ?

My personal fave moment yesterday
( and I was only switching back / forth w / the Packers ) was in 2d half where he gets an uncontested drive to the basket
and he was going to dunk it, then for some unknown reason he decides in mid
air to lay it in .., only to way over lay  it for another embarrassing blown layup!

I think the best argument for Ross not starting is that we are completely out of it and he won't be here next year.

If Ross is still busting it at practice, if he has a good attitude, and if in the coach's mind he still "wants it," it would send a bad message and set a bad precedent to bench a player just because.

There are plenty of ways to get younger guys playing time without benching your hardest working and most talented player.

Now, if Ross isn't still busting it at practice, that's another story. None of us is there to know.

I can't believe I'm participating in this troll thread. I am, however, glad that I not only didn't sell AAPL when Heisy was calling it dead money but that I actually bought more. Thanks for the tip, buddy!

I get that thought, but I think we've gotten to the point where everything is on the table?

Exactly, this looks to be a 10-23 team this year. Is there any urgency to win games? To accomplish what? Get to .500 so we can pay to play in the CBE?

Or is this a rebuilding year and play everyone to see who gets asked to stay and who needs to go to make room for portal transfers?

Ross not starting may have already started. He only played 26 minutes and not at the end of the game.

He was taken out soon after the blown lay-up, followed by the blown dunk on the next possession.

These two consecutive possessions, in the hands of your "best" player, could have cut the second-half deficit from 31 points to 16.

Win the game? Probably not. But at least it would have shown this team still cares and has fight ... it is obvious they don't (right now), and their best player is incapable of converting 12 inches from the basket, tells you all you need to know.

We know that Chase is a very good player.  He basically put us in the S16 with his performance and win over Colorado.  The problem is he's not effective as a high volume put the ball in his hands guy.  He is much better off the ball and then attacking in space. His inability to make plays off the dribble, especially dimeing, is what's destroying his game imo.  But all that said, the consistency with his shot hasn't improved, and not really having other guys to alleviate scoring pressure is super difficult for him.  The bottom line is I don't see much if any improvement from our returning players.  In fact it appears they have gotten worse.

Sure he blew those 2 layups but I was very encouraged by his aggression attacking the basket. I hadn't seen that the previous couple of games. I wonder if watching Nigel go balls out to the rim time after time motivated Chase.

By no means do I think Chase should be/needs to be benched. Despite his recent struggles, he's still the best player out there for MU.

That said, what's with the seeming obsession around here (not just your post, by any means, 82) with practice? Of course we want every player to bust it in practice, but that shouldn't be the deciding factor in who plays (much less that look in their eye).
Marquette basketball is not a developmental program. Making players better than when they arrived is not the goal. Winning games is the goal. And the best way to win games is to play the guys who perform best in the games, not the guys who try the hardest in practice.

Obviously, we want players to grow and improve during their time in the program, but that should be a by-product of trying to win, not the endgame. I'm certain Caedin Hamilton and Ben Gold are better basketball players today than they were when they arrived on campus. And they probably try hard in practice. Good for them for that (sincerely).
But I don't care unless that improvement is leading to wins, and it's not.

For the sweet love of God, enough with the "pulling redshirts" nonsense.

It is so beyond stupid I don't even know what to say anymore.

Thanks for the thoughtful post, Pak.

I've spent a lot of time around coaches at every level from middle school through the pros. And talent being roughly equal, they are obsessed with rewarding hard work, practice habits, leadership, team-first attitude, etc.

As I said, I do not know if Ross is among our best in those departments because I'm not around to observe. But if he is, and if he also is one of our best players (as I think you'd probably agree he is), I don't see Shaka benching him.

If I'm wrong, though, it wouldn't be a first.

C'mon, Smuggles. We were down by 23 points with 9 minutes left when Shaka subbed out Ross for the final time.

Nice to see you back on Scoop just for the piling-on troll threads, though. You were missed when MU was winning the Big East and earning #2 seeds.

Benched means not to play. Not starting means "coming off the bench" and still getting 15 to 20 minutes a game. Light it up, and you can get your starting role back.

But again, what is the point of this season? I said they have 10 wins this year. Others have said we'd be lucky to get 10 wins.

So, what should we be playing for? I would argue next year and give the underclassmen ample playing time to evaluate them.

What 5 big east games is MU winning? Even DePaul hung vs UConn  for a half.  Marquette barely got a good 10 min at home against Georgetown.

A coach need not limit his best player to 15 minutes to give underclassmen lots of playing time, especially if Lowery is done and Gold is barely gonna play.

But you'd have known that already if you had been smart enough to hold onto your AAPL stock.

They're been a lot of personal bludgeoning attacks recently among Scoopers.  Everyone seems a bit wound up.  But I suppose that's understandable.
