Poll
Question:
Which team was better?
Option 1: 2014-15: Wojo's first season
Option 2: 2025-26: Shaka's fifth season
I think at this point this is a fun little exercise and viable debate. Okay...let's go position by position:
- PG: Nigel James vs Derrick Wilson
- SG: Chase Ross vs Matt Carlino
- SF: Zaide Lowery vs Duane Wilson
- PF: Ben Gold vs Juan Anderson
- C: Caedin Hamilton vs Luke Fischer
- Bench: Parham/Norman/Stevens vs Johnson/Taylor/Cohen
.
I'd take James narrowly over Derrick and Ross over Carlino. I think 2015 wins every other matchup. Wilson, Juan, & Luke were far more consistent with higher game-to-game ceilings.
As far as the teams, offenses were similarly bad, but while Ross has explosive potential, Carlino is the best pure scorer and the Duane/Fischer combination are better secondary options than anyone we have now. Defense is shockingly close. Better rim protection, eFG% defense, and TO rate in 2015, but this is a much better rebounding team.
I lean 2015, what say you?
I think Derrick Wilson and Carlino get the best of James and Ross at least 50% of the time...probably more honestly. Carlino was an elite shooter and Derrick would cause problems for Nigel as a super strong defensive guard.
The 2015 front court would kill this team.
Ben > college Juan.
I was a Derrick defender. James is much better.
2015 team had Magic Dawson. Easy choice.
Did you pick the 2015 team 2nd or 1st in conference that year?

Not senior Juan. He was a good player.
Agree on NJ.
Shaka just said with a straight face in the postgame interview "this is a character building win."
I think the fact that statement was made about a game at home, against Valpo means 2015 in a landslide.
2026 would win as they are playing 5 on 4
Good post. I keep going back and forth... then realized that's pretty concerning.

You're sounding a teensy bit racist saying this, MU2007. Easy now...
2015. Wojo's first year and had to put it together. He gets a pass
Shaka's team is a bunch of misfits under the Growth and Development module. Shaka had five years to put this together
Shaka just can't say it, "we played like crap lucky to win". Has to go with another motto. Gets old.

Why can't he just say that? Is he in denial. Annoying
Tough to remember how good all those 2015 guys were but
James a bit over Wilson
Ross a bit over carlino
Wash for Wilson and lowery I think as
Wash for gold and Juan. Don't recall how good Juan was his last year.
Fischer light years above Hamilton and parham. Honestly both teams are pretty closely matched I think

Duane then is better than Lowery now. Juan was solid his senior year. Fischer would go 20 and 10 easily on this year's team.

LMAO "I'll take James narrowly over Derrick." Sounds about right from you, Brew!
Derrick Wilson was the worst player to ever play 30+ per game for two seasons in MU basketball history. Tre Norman is better than Derrick, FFS.
Carlin's could win a game.
Although both not good teams, the 2015 team gave me more reason to hope for the future than this year's squad.
That team had Wilson, Burton, JJJ, Fischer and Cohen as promising underclassmen (plus Henry coming the next year).
The current squad has Nigel, Stevens and maybe Parham to build around.
As bad as this team is...it still mostly revolves around one position.
We are probably 8-1 right now if we have Fischy instead of Hamilton. That's how much that position matters.
Duane had a higher ceiling than Zaide. Iirc he went for 30+ during that year
Fischer was solid, injured but solid.
Chase over Carlino, who could lose us a game as much as win it. Chase has more to his game.
James over Derrick not close
Leaves Juan vs Ben. Inclined to say Juan.
More fun than this would be 2026 vs Wojo's final year.

I think Zaide has a way higher ceiling than Duane. More athletic and better defender with a serviceable shot. Zaide had 28 last year as a Sophomore at Villanova. Duane was a better individual scorer though.

Very possible. This is worst front court I've ever seen at this program
