Title: Our Way: Strategy
Post by: Jay Bee on November 20, 2025, 06:52:03 AM
We all know RGV and our personnel strategy and love that it's different than others. Do we fully appreciate our unique play calling as well? Amazing stuff! Do you have some favorites?

"OK guys, when the opponent is trying to initiate offense from 40 feet out, we need Ben hedging. If his assignment breaks free, do the opposite of helping. Create a huge black hole for the player to waltz into; if you happen to be in his vicinity when he gets the ball, I want to see a bullfight practice -- we are the matadors, they are the bulls. GET OUT OF THE WAY. We want them to have it so easy they may miss because they can't believe what was handed to them! OUR WAY!"

"OK boys, we're tied with 17 seconds. Most teams look for the last shot of the game, or try to initiate contact since the refs have shown they love to blow the whistle tonight... not us. I want us passing around the outside of the 3-point line... keep deferring guys. And then, you know what? NO SHOTS. We'll totally fool the opposition! The no shot, no attack offense - OUR WAY!"

"Great job on the no shot play! It's overtime now. Ben is slightly dinged up, so let's have him sit on the bench for a few minutes. Should we put in a wing for him? Nah,.. .hell nah. Let's go with Caedin! Now, we're going to see zone, so I want to see something unique. Let's get Caedin out at the 3-point line, free throw line extended... get him the ball with his back to the basket out there and let him go to work. No one will be thinking we'd have him trying to back down the ball 20 feet. The defense will be confused. Let's go! OUR WAY!"

Not getting a shot at the end of regulation was awful. In the post game Shaka talked again about avoidance. Seemed to me we wanted to avoid a chance at winning the game.

Chase got in the lane, put it up. If you miss, we've been great on the offensive glass & there's time for a putback. NJ, Ben, shoot! If you miss, it's overtime.

17 seconds, took a timeout, and didn't get a shot? Massive coaching fail.

A lot of chieftains and no chief.  Ross is a very good player, but he's spent the last three years differing to NBA guys.  He's not had to be THE DUDE, and he's finding out that the team is looking for him to be THE DUDE.

And if they were confused by the zone...call another TO! You can't turn them in for points.

This is just a poorly constructed ten. Not a single player who can ply in tgg he paint. I thought Parham would help there, but he has been my biggest disappointment this year.

Yep, expected a lot more from Parham.  I still think he'll get it going soon.

don't forget the 3-pt shooting (9/31 29%) Ok fellas, shoot to get hot, shoot to stay hot, or not.

Shaka said in the post game that the scripted the final play for zone. They should not have been confused there.

And that was a jump the last few minutes to get there.  They were around 22% at the three quarter mark.

Yep. Shaka and the staff failed on the roster front. Brutal to watch this team play. Three point shooting continues to be a problem, just like last year. We have no inside game, again like last season. We will get destroyed by most teams in the BE. Watched UCONN last night, we will look like a HS team against them.

That's even worse! If they scripted that play for zone, and THAT'S what the result was? Oy...

My problem was no one putting something up. When Chase spun, he had enough space to put something up. He passed to an open James, who passed to Gold who had no one big enough to contest his shot.

Last year, Shaka blamed NMD being "too big a moment" for that team. Last night, no one looked willing to embrace that game winning moment they earned. I can't fathom what the messages are that this whole team embraces the avoidance they say they specifically are coaching against.

Don't forget our visit to West Lafayette in a few weeks. Hide the women and children.

I'd love an analysis on MU last shot attempts over the years. I feel we never get a good look no matter the coach, so I wasn't surprised. Actually a bit surprised Dayton didn't end up with a good look.

What happened to playing with violence? We don't fight over screens? We don't play assertive on offense? We're so soft and passive. The opposite of what was preached for years.
