Title: RIP Jane Goodall
Post by: MuggsyB on October 01, 2025, 01:26:50 PM
Very sad.  But she lived to a ripe old age and leaves a tremendous legacy.  All the best to her family.

An interesting side story for Jane Goodall. Gary Larson (the Far Side) made a cartoon that referenced Jane, and technically called her a tramp. Her aides wrote a letter demanding it be pulled and chastising Gary.

When Jane returned and saw the cartoon, she loved it, her aides had to apologize to Gary, and Jane ended up writing the intro to one of his collections. Supposedly, Jane was given the original, because she loved it so much (Gary didn't give away originals).

Great person, sad day, and the story above highlights the attitude people should have when you are sometimes made fun of...laugh, because that is the point, and she said she felt like she was a celebrity if she made it into the Far Side (an honor, not an offense).

Outstanding story.  Very sad day for sure and a major, major, loss.

I'll be honest, Jane definitely fell into the category of "Oh I didn't realize they were still with us" celebrities.

That being said, she was a remarkable woman.  Honestly, the main takeaway I always had about her was how entirely thoughtful and measured she was on so many topics, and very much pragmatic in the face of some of her peers.  Her support and praise for many zoos that did primate enclosures and care in the right way was entirely reasonable and obviously founded in tons of experience and knowledge, yet so many in her circles had the "hurr durr all captive animals are being wronged".  Her views and expressed opinions on religion and spirituality Ive always found very eloquent and elegant.

Funny contradictions with her was I remember reading that despite her field of expertise and life's work, her favorite animals were actually dogs.  And also, she had face blindness, yet so much of her work was centered on recognizing and knowing various named chimps.

Jane knew some primates were inferior and should be jettisoned into space

Bet Jane wouldn't approve of Muggsy's 5-point plan.  A real paradox

Yes.  She knew she was dying and secretly recorded this interview to be shared after she died.

Strange, everything you've posted about in the past few months would leave me to believe you would have hated this woman.
