How loud were the cries of the children in attendance?
Nigel and Stevens were awesome. Both are very ready to play day one.
Chase is our best player, as expected, but based on how the teams were split he was forced to play a lot of PG today instead of being able to just attack and shoot from the wing.
Ben Gold is better, but I dont see the star jump. Just a really solid, veteran starting 5 man.
Royce didnt shoot well, but was good around the rim. Clearly bigger, stronger than last year.
Zaide didnt force much in the halfcourt but is outstanding in transition. So athletic and so fluid attacking the rim.
Owens is better. Bigger, more confident. Definitely ready for a bigger role this year. Didnt quite look like he's ready for a massive star jump to me yet. Id bet on that next year for him instead.
Caiden didnt live up to the hype last year... but I thought he was the most improved player on the floor today. First possession he faked a DHO and went to throw one down over Clarke. A play he never could have made last year. Looks so much more aggressive and confident.
Philips and Miletic are freshman. Not ready for big minutes, but both had a couple flashes and can definitely see the potential. Year 2, bigger impact.
Same with Clarke, and obviously Sheek. Showed flashes, but one more weightroom year will be the key for both.
Overall, this feels like a tourney team to me. Id say 7-10 seed though, borderline top 25 team. Not a protected seed type. Love the flashes from the freshman and sophomores though, got a chance to be special starting next year.

They dominated a weak defense. (/teal)
Didn't see the scrimmage, but I'm bracing myself for a lot of good and a little of rough (turnovers). Heart and effort will be there.
That's a really good review. Thought Steven's and James both looked good as well. Both are strong enough to play BEAST ball. Steven's looked adequate from 3 (3 and D as frosh) and James looked better than Tre.
Clark is intriguing as his size just allows him to make some plays on both ends, but he may need another year of hitting the weights and buffet.
Shaka banking on Hamilton to do more this year.
Parham didn't shoot it well, but he looks like he really bulked up.
As a whole they looked bigger and more athletic than previous teams. Not as skilled. Warmup drills were a lot of aggression at the rim. There's a focus of getting up and down the court quickly and finishing strong at the rim, as well as crashing the offensive boards.
Agree with everything JTJ3 posted above.
Last year the team struggled a bit to score in transition. That could be a strength this year with the guards pushing the ball, Chase, Zaide and Damarius on the wings and Ben and Royce trailing for open 3's.
I could see as many as 3 players have redshirt options this year and all 3 could be rotation guys for 3-4 years after that. I don't know if I have ever said that about a 13-14 man Marquette roster.
Quote from: TedBaxter on October 05, 2025, 07:32:21 AMLast year the team struggled a bit to score in transition.
We actually struggled getting into transition (65th percentile in transition rate) but we were elite when we got out in transition. Our 1.38 ppp in transition was in the 99th percentile but because it was the lowest rate of Shaka's tenure we probably seemed less efficient there.

Anyone have any idea if Phillips and/or Miletic redshirting is being considered in addition to Sheek?
I thought Phillips showed way more than a few flashes. He was very active on both ends of the court. A few very nice blocks above the rim. And, probably didn't make as many 3s as he would like, but took several, made a few, got fouled on a couple. Shot looks good, he's confident and has the trust of his teammates and coaches.
I know there were some rumblings about him redshirting (because he and Pearson should both still be in HS), but to me he looks further along than Owens was last year. He could stand a year to get stronger, but he is long, can shoot, and is very active.
As for the freshman, NJ and Stevens are ready now. Phillips can contribute, but not sure much time he will get with Zaide and Damarius playing a similar role. Doesn't mean he won't redshirt, but I'd expect Militic and Pearson to be your 2 redshirts.
Shooters always have a place, but I don't see Phillips or Militic getting minutes unless they prove to be elite shooters. The game looks too fast and physical for them yet, especially Militic. Agreed that Phillips looked more capable at this point.
Did Shaka allude to redshirting additional players?
I've been to a few MU practices mid-year. I love that he is bringing guys like Clark and Pearson in a year early to develop. Not only from a strength and conditioning standpoint, but they beat the sh1t out of each other in practice throughout the year. The growth you have to get from that versus playing high school ball, while collecting some NIL, seems like a really good move to me.
I'm curious as to if Clark gets situational minutes this year in meaningful moments.

Encouraged by the analysis of some scoopers that James and Stevens should be ready to contribute from the jump. Would be nice to have one of them or both make a Dominic James/Jerel McNeal like contribution freshman year. Changes the ceiling for this team.

In between optimistic and pessimistic (or worried as Wades puts it sarcastically). No hyper athletic big man like Oso. No sure scorer like Kam. Leadership void that needs to be filled. Have Dwyane Wade paid it off
I was somewhat pessimistic heading into the summer but felt better after watching the scrimmage in August. Stevens can really play and the short stretch Nigel James played before sitting out showed he is a high level athlete that can play immediately.
After watching the Blue and Gold Scrimmage I am firmly in the optimistic camp. Nigel James is so quick and physical on both ends of the floor...he will play a bunch as will Stevens. He is a difference maker. The combo of Gold, Parham, Hamilton, and Clark will be fine in the post. Hamiton and Clark have come a long ways. By far the most physical and athletic squad Shaka has had and they will play much faster than previous teams. Consistent outside shooting remains a concern but there are players capable of shooting consistently. This will be a very fun team to watch grow.
The James and Stevens reviews are a reason for cautious optimism in addition to the hope that the retuning role players become stars. There had to be some infusion of new talent IMO to raise the ceiling of this team. No returners were stars last year. Some showed glimpses but not consistently. Shaka has said himself that this year is a stress test on his system. Can't wait to find out.
The lack of outside shooting is going to continue to be a problem IMO, and is really going to prevent this teams from going too far. They will be fun to watch grow however.

Also my main concern, along with the ability to win the turnover battle most games. If we want to be a team that again emphasizes layups/dunks and 3s, we need to be able to make 3s. (He said, stating the obvious.)
When Kam and Joplin had long shooting slumps last season, it undermined the ability to win playing the way the offense was designed to work. And Kam was a great player, and Jop a solid one.
Maybe a few of Ross, Gold, Lowery, Owens, James, Jones, Parham, etc, will hit 3s at a better clip than most of us think will happen. Here's hoping!
I also am really looking forward to the season. I think it will be a competitive, stepping-stone year to better times ahead. An NCAA tourney bid will be a major success.

Would love for Zaide to break out and be a star. Has the physical gifts to do it. Smooth athleticism.
For most of these guys it will be the mental part. Have to want to be the man, or at least one of a handful of guys willing to put the team on their back when It matters against the better teams. There is enough physical talent to blow out lesser teams.
Chase, Sean, Zaide, Royce would be the obvious to step up. If those who have seen the freshman play think Nigel and Adrien can help in this regard, great. Shaka wants Caedin to be in this group but he is still a work in progress skill wise.
Ben doesn't seem like the take charge kind of guy after three years. He should be steady though. Owens, maybe. Definitely an X factor.
Hopefully we see a Shaka first to second year jump.
Zaide will be fine. He defends well and is a complimentary scorer. I think there is confidence in what the team gets from Chase and Sean. They are consistent players with known skill sets.
Last year the team relied on Norman to pay some meaningful minutes. He is a team-oriented player and his effort is great. That being said, from my perspective James and Stevens are solidly in front of him and the depth at the guard spots is clearly stronger than it has been. I think they are better defensively with more athleticism and there is much more of a rim protection presence. If this team can consistently make shots, and it is a pretty big if, it is a solid top 25 team.
Caedin is fetch.

Sounds a little like the way Shaka was promoting Oso's improvement during the lead up to the 2022-23 season. Different skillset, obviously, but I like hearing good things about a player who could really help us if he makes a leap.
For those that haven't seen him play this year, Caiden has really slimmed down and moves very well on the court. He handles the ball similar to Oso. I have no idea if he can score or what this will look like during the regular season but he is clearly a rotation guy in the top 7-8. As I mentioned before, the 4-5 spots are in a good place with Gold, Hamilton, Parham, and Hamilto.

Ross was having a very good season until the hand injury. After that, he struggled. Can he stay healthy?
Owens was hurt in the pre-season and that possibly limited his development. Can he take a big step in what he can contribute?
Hamilton has some passing abilities, much like Oso. Will be interesting to see if he will play a similar role.

You provide an important reminder. Ross and Owens were both injured to the point of needing surgery after the season. Owens was the 'it' player at the August open practice in 24.
Caedin was so focused he left the postseason banquet early to get another workout in. I remember posting that he and Clark would look at Ejiofor and use him as an inspiration to do one more rep in the weight room. Hopefully, CH has taken a step in that direction.
Yep. I'll have to see the freshman play against high major programs to believe they are ready to be difference makers.

Turnovers make a difference :/

Hamilton making a jump raises the ceiling significantly for this team. It was frustrating playing the top teams last year as we clearly lacked the "nastiness" needed to mix it up with opposing bigs. He plays with a lot of emotion so he'll be a fun guy to root for either way.

More are "no one is a good player until I see them do it in January." Mopey fan base

Yup. I, for one, was convinced that Damarius would be the next great at Marquette.
He still might could, but this is a huge year for him. I think we will know pretty quickly into the season.
I expect a massive jump for Zaide, but if I had to handicap in this moment I would still argue that I see bigger stardom in DOs future, aka a higher ceiling.
With Caedin honestly have 0 expectations. Not a knock, but I just don't expect much so anything he gives I will gladly take- I felt much the same about Benny but had more expectations for Ben. The guys we haven't seen in a regular game I can't comment on.
As for Chase, I would be very surprised if he wasn't the star of this years team, and slightly surprised if he wasn't 1st team all BE. I've got a lot of expectations for him, for good or bad.
Let's get it tipped already!

Well, at least we established he's black.
Miletic to redshirt, perhaps Dodds.

Dodds should have redshirted long ago.

After the practice, Coach had Clark make some comments about redshirting and the game day routines they have when they aren't playing. When he was done he said something like " Sheek, Ian that's what you can look forward to.
I took it from that that Miletic will be redshirting.
Thanks for the update.
Good crowd. About 1K in the building. Shaka very informative on the mic in what they do in timeouts, etc.

I can guarantee that Dodds was drunk.
But no other observations
Anyone else there that can share what they saw?
Not that I don't appreciate the update that Michael Phillips is black.

Are we just ignoring that his shots were hitting trees? Not encouraging.

Dodds has made the mistake of dictating his posts and having his phone mess it up and then not checking himself.

I wasn't aware of all these players switching numbers. So, at first I didn't know whom it was hitting all these 3's in a drill they were doing. It was Michael Phillips.

For those of us old enough, we've known that since his Miami Vice days.
Tre / Chase / Zaide / Royce / Benny opening night aina
