Title: Happy 4th of July!
Post by: Uncle Rico on July 04, 2025, 06:18:45 AM
Happy 4th of July, even to all the losers and haters, of which there are many!

Let's take a solemn moment to reflect on the impotence of this day as we remember when we beat the French at the Battle of Gettysburg to win our independence lead by our great Air Force.

God rest your soul, General Robert E. Lee for giving your life for freedom that day.

Did you know James Brown's "Living in America" was based on what he witnessed that day?

Our greatest president and author of the Constitution, Ben Franklin, was born on this day in 1776.

Is the Constitution like a webpage or something? Cause I've never heard of it.

I thought it was a book like the Bible. Quote a few spots you like, but by and large ignore it.

Yeah, why do that when I can get hammered at the local town festival and then go home and shoot off fireworks instead?  That's clearly what the founders intended.

I like that the new holiday tradition is for POTUS to declare he HATES half of the country.

Other than Herman, they haven't migrated to the Dodds board.  At least one of them had been banned from there, anyway.

I have no clue what you mean by this. Only old guys wish a happy 4th without being snarky? If so, I guess I'm happy to be old!

My wife and I went to Monticello today for the annual naturalization ceremony. This year's speaker was Ken Burns, who told the audience that for years, he would read the full text on his back porch in New Hampshire to his daughters, friends and neighbors on the 4th. Burns is a class act and gave a beautiful speech. There were 74 new citizens, many of whom turned around to face the audience of about 3500 and smile and wave with their citizenship certificate in hand.

Some spoke to the audience, including an Afghani woman who said it was very hard to leave her country, but she feared for her safety. An Irishman said he decided to become a citizen after living here for a while because he wanted to contribute to the country as an American citizen. Others struggled to speak, overcome with emotion.

I noticed one item that no one was wearing today, and I scanned the crowd, thinking there must be at least a few. But none, zilch, nada, zip. Today at Monticello, apparently America was still great.

Our local city celebrated the Fourth of July appropriately playing music while the fireworks went off, including the Guess Who's American woman.

If 83, you have been a part of this country for a third of its existence.
If 63, you have been a part of this country for a quarter of its existence.

I'm at my mom's this weekend and we spent this evening with friends who became naturalized citizens last August after 18 years here. My wife stayed back home with her mom as this was their first 4th of July without her dad who considered the day his favorite holiday after becoming a naturalized citizen in 1980.

Have been through two naturalization ceremonies -- one each for my children. After all of the hassle, all of the problems, the costs and the agony of dealing with countless state, federal and international bureaucracies, you realize in the moment when the judge makes them citizens, it's all worth it.

We told our children as they became older that the best thing we ever did for them was sponsoring them for American citizenship. We argue about a lot of things that mean a lot us politically, socially and otherwise in this country and even on Scoop. But when you see where those children came from, you realize that, for all our faults, this country is truly exceptional.

Happy Independence Day everyone.
