Sorry to hear that. If it makes you feel better, some kid shot his parents in Wisconsin and wanted to shoot Trump.
Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil said in a press conference on Thursday that 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, the son of a sheriff's deputy who had access to one of her weapons, is the shooter. The weapon was one of those found at the scene, cops said. Eichner is now in police custody.

Also requirements for securing/storing such that if your gun is used in a crime by another, you would be liable if you don't secure it

Yesterday's surgery was to go in and check for any traumatic damage. None was found, she is in good spirits. Today, they go in and get the bullet out.

Very happy to hear there was no traumatic damage. Hopefully, today's surgery is "uneventful". Being in good spirits is a big plus, but I would not be surprised if she also has some sessions with a therapist to deal with the event.
Traumatic events leave invisible scars, too.

I've been in one, on a college campus. We were locked down in our office, and suddenly there was a loud knock on the door. Since I was new, I got to open it, and it was the Staples delivery guy who had no idea what was going on. My admin lost it on him. When my nephew's campus had an active shooter (MSU where students were killed), I reached out to him immediately after to talk about our experiences and how to deal with it moving forward. He had been off campus at work and had no idea what was happening, but still, a kid from his HS was shot he would get an eerie feeling walking past the building where it happened for a while.
I have cleaned up after many. Drugs, drive by's, domestic. My rough estimate of shootings with multiple victims that I responded to is 5 over 33 years in my little corner of the universe when I was on duty. Also responded to a 4 y/o getting hold of a gun. Only twice out of all of them was there a surprise twist of the gun/shooter/ scene not being as cleared as we were led to believe. Attention grabbing.
And yes, cynical bastards that we are/were, we would be trying to guess the gun by the wound.
Never had a school, never had an angry guy with an AR. Trained for both, missed out.

The surgeons have not removed the bullet yet. They have decided that it is not a threat to the spine, so they will let some of the other stuff heal and the swelling subside before they go back in. She should be leaving the hospital in the next day or two.
Doctors changed their mind and released her this evening. Surgery to remove the bullet pushed back to June or July.

One of the amazing things about Florida is alligators have more protection than humans.
If an alligator mozies on to your property, no matter how threatening, you're required to call a state agency, which will then send some kind of alligator abatement officer to either relocate it or shoot it. If you shoot it, you have committed a Class 4 felony.
If a human does the same thing, Florida's Stand Your Ground law allows you to shoot the human. As the Hard Rock Cafe song heralding sports betting said, "it's legal in Florida!"
The good news is that the Florida state House just passed a law to lower the age at which people can buy guns.
The only way to truly be safe is if every man, woman and child owns at least 25 guns.

Fortunately, we live on a barrier island and the estuary between us and land is discouraging to alligators, so we don't have any. The fact we have rabbits galore means we don't have the typical collection of Florida fun animals that mainlanders do.
That said, you still have to call a gator cop to put the animal out of its misery. You can bypass the people cops!
