Title: Chicago Sports Radio
Post by: The Sultan on March 21, 2025, 02:58:08 PM
I find it both surprising, yet not very surprising, that Dan Bernstein lost his job at WSCR because he threatened a guy on Twitter over picture of a fish he caught. Wierd and mental behavior.

What is his scoop username?

I always knew it was going to end weirdly for Bernstein and the Score. Never imagined a large pike would be involved though.

Was always a big fan of Boers and Bernstein but Dan has changed since Terry retired.  And not for the better.

He's had a couple of bizarre incidents the past few years.

A bit of a Keith Olberman complex.

Sad that a cesspool like Barstool has worked so hard to bring him down.

My brother is friends with a producer at The Score, and after the Barstool incident, the producers for Bernstein/Holmes made the decision to only put callers on the air that they knew. You'd hear Bernstein say "Look who's out today, it's NIU Dave, haven't heard from him in a while!". Producers were texting known friends of the show, who they knew wouldn't call Dan "Bernstein". Holmes hated this, and it was a big reason he wanted to change to afternoons.

I have a friend who is on the board at Camp One Step, and texted me this week saying "We can't keep him on the board when he's attacking someone's kids, when our mission is to support children".

Nobody worked hard to bring him down, he brought himself down by becoming an increasingly arrogant, delusional, narcissistic pretty boy across the board.  And that's coming from someone who listened to B&B nearly every day and enjoyed Bernstein despite his knack for being ornery and cranky.

And for what it's worth, he didn't get into it with Portnoy or another Barstool firebrand. He attacked a gregarious Chicago guy who's really well liked across Chicago media, has never been the source of any controversy and actively tried to avoid it, and was a huge Bernstein fan himself.

I agree it was all his own fault - that's why I compared him to Olberman.

But Portnoy has been after Bernstein for a couple years.

Bernstein and Abatacola back together on his new pod today.

Both took responsibility for their past and said they f'd up.

I could see this podcast getting a big following.  The Score isn't what it used to be.

The beginning of the end was when DeCastro got rid of Hanley (MU guy!), Spiegel, and Goff to bring in McNeil, McKnight, and Haugh.

If he can be the Bernstein of a few years ago, definitely. You said this a few months ago, and I think it's 100% accurate.

It's been a week (very short sample size) and so far this podcast has a lot of room for improvement.

I thought it seemed weird that both Abbatacola & Bernstein shared mental health issues on the opening show, and the very next show was sponsored by My Bookie. I get that they need sponsors and gambling companies will always sponsor a show like this, but it felt gross.

The hanging out vibe the show gives off doesn't fit Bernstein. The show definitely needs a third (producer type) voice.

I'm curious if they'll bring in guys like Boers/McNeil for occasional hits.

Final thought, show would be way better being live with listener interaction.

Without gambling ads, there's no way this is viable economical. Even with them, still not sure.

They really don't talk about sports very much.

I'm really enjoying the show.  It's giving some Boers and Bernstein vibes.  (Terry will be on Wednesday's show.  Hey buddy.)  I like Dan and Matt together and wouldn't add a third man unless it's just a producer (Shane Riordan?) taking calls and chiming in occasionally.  But maybe that becomes Matt's job once they have callers and guests.

Matt is a good foil calling Bernstein on his crap.  Matt muttered "penis" under his breath the other day after he guessed Bernstein was age 24 the last time he was at Cracker Barrel and Dan was disgusted because the correct answer was 23.  Felt like Terry was back.

At the end of the Friday show they did say this is just an early version of the show they wanted to get up and running before football season starts.  It sounded like they expect to go live, have callers, guests, etc.  Dan said if they have a list of 3,000 things they need to do, they've done about 50 of them.

Dan has talked about his mental issues in the past and I think it made sense to open the show with it considering how his last job ended.  There's been lots of Abatacola rumors online over the years as well so I thought it also made sense for him to lead off with it.

There's definitely no way Dan gives a sh!t about sports betting.  Like Sultan said, it probably pays the bills though.

These are all good/fair points. I have high expectations for this podcast, and believe Bernstein can fill a large void in the current state of Chicago sports media (albeit, a void he helped create).

I totally understand the need for sponsors and sports betting will happily fill that request. I admit it was probably only myself that found it a bit tone deaf.

I didn't listen to the Friday show, and if those things are upcoming, that's great. Based on your points here, I'll make sure to give it a listen this week.

Oof...that was a rough listen. Not blaming TB as he isn't in the best of health and isn't really plugged in. He says he hardly watches sports. So it was just the three of them sharing stories which got pretty dull pretty quick.

Yeah... Terry was on the Parkins Cancer Telethon a month ago and it was much of the same.  Seems pretty down on his health.

They did say on today's episode that Wednesday will be guest day.

Finished the episode on my drive to work this morning.  I actually enjoyed all of the old stories but it felt like it was a final goodbye.  It doesn't seem like Terry has much time left.
