Title: MU/Johnnies Game Thread
Post by: MuggsyB on March 13, 2025, 06:33:58 PM
I saw a semi flip-switch today with our guys in the 2H.  Very little hesitancy, zip passes and better ball movement, quicker to the loose balls, and rising and firing with confidence.  Obviously C-Well had a career game.  Props to him.  That said down 14, with X playing for their tournament lives, MU responded with a force we haven't seen for some time.

The challenge will be difficult tomorrow but we know we can beat them.  1000 % of the pressure is on them.  Mitchell once again will be a big key to this game.  The young man had a massive 2H today.  Let's go now!!

While the season as a whole hasn't been as charmed as it was in '23 when we beat UCONN, this game has the potential to be just about as much fun.  Would love a revenge game where we knock St. John's off in the Garden in the BET on Friday night during their dream season.

Not sure why St. John's would feel a significant amount of pressure.

A 2 seed is still in play for them.  Plus, the home court pressure.

We know for one thing that it will be harder for St. John's to beat MU for a third time than it was for them to win the first two times.

Mr. Dodds taught me that.

So....the home team has more pressure on them than the visiting team, right? Since Muggsy said it, it's not even debatable.  ::)  :o  ;D

Beating SJU at the MSG is a big ask.  However, MU has been competitive with them twice.   Two good games.  I am going to stay blindly optimistic.  MU gets over the hump this time.

I'm on board. The adjective "blindly" was the clincher, as it removes any need to defend the W prediction with stats or rationality.  ;D

No - that only works against Marquette not for Marquette.  Just like the it's impossible to beat a team on their senior night.

are you being flippant here? StJ hasn't had a season like this since when,  Walter Berry? Top 10 ranking. 2-seed...possible 1 in play. 'Home' court. Darlings of NYC. They might come out a little tight. RickyP has the StJ program re-established as a beast...which is GREAT for the conference imo, but this team isn't invincible. MU? House $. Just play. Whatever happens happens. Maybe everything clicks tnite...good shooting, low on the turnovers, hit FT's (they matta!), stay out of foul trouble and who knows, might be playing tomorrow night against our buddy Hurley with the possibility of a 4-seed next week.

Stevie is 17 points from 1000.

Still think they cheer for us.

NYC is full of transplants (who, of course, have their own team) and not St. John's alums.

It takes almost an hour on the subway to get from SJU to MSG.  I can get from the Madison area to the Fiserv in almost the same amount of time!

My guess is the St. John's fans are budgeting this tourney.  Planning to go Friday and Saturday nights, so the Thursday noon game against a pushover is not worthy of their time and money.

Wow.  A win tonight plus a run to the Sweet 16 would mean that Jop, Kam, and Stevie are 1-2-3.

The full top ten+ if you're curious:

1.    Lazar Hayward, 2006-07 to 2009-10    138
2.    David Joplin, 2021-22 to 2024-25    137
3.    Kameron Jones, 2021-22 to 2024-25    135
4.    David Cubillan, 2006-07 to 2009-10    133
Stevie Mitchell, 2021-22 to 2024-25    133
6.    Derrick Wilson, 2011-12 to 2014-15    132
7.    Jerel McNeal, 2005-06 to 2008-09    130
8.    Dominic James, 2005-06 to 2008-09    129
9.    Markus Howard, 2016-17 to 2019-20    128
10.    Davante Gardner, 2010-11 to 2013-14    127
Ousmane Barro, 2004-05 to 2007-08    127
Wesley Matthews, 2005-06 to 2008-09    127

Worth noting: Ben Gold is already at 105 and Chase Ross is already at 100.  They'll be at the top of this list next year as well.

If one took Kam's career 2 and 3pt FG% and equalized shot attempts to Markus, he would have another 373 points on his resume, thus still trailing by 400 points.  Markus's record seemingly will be safe for a LOOOOONG time.

Stevie will join the 1000 club tomorrow night, with a game winner to give the Warriors a Big East Title.  I mean Stevie is 1 of 1 as Shaka says, and a special kid - would be an amazing way to get 1,000 point.  8-)

Gotta remember that Markus isn't just Marquette's all time leading scorer.

He's the Big East All Time Leading Scorer. Even with 5 years of eligibility for a lot of guys Markus could still hold onto that for awhile.

Was anyone at MSG last night that can attest to how many MU fans/supporters there were? I ask because although the home crowd will strongly favor St. John's, we'll surely have a noticeably louder crowd presence tonight than we did during our first meeting at MSG.

It may be a home game for them, but I think that the heartbreaking loss on senior night (less than six days ago) and the revenge mentality it creates could be just what we need to pull an upset.

We have to find a way to keep Ejiofor off of the offensive glass.  Those second chance opportunities are killers.  Hopefully limit him to just 3 or 4.

Do that, stay even in the turnover battle, and make our share of threes and we have a great chance.

Agree w CT and limiting the Johnnies on the boards. Plus hit close to 40% from 3, make some free throws. We can do it.

Was also thinking that our guys have now played a lot of games at msg, should be used to the background and rims when shooting.

We are Marquette!!

I mean cant ask for a better start overall. But woof its unraveling a bit. Shaka has got to use the TO's

They finally see one go through. Jop misses the answer, fine.

But after that out of position on D. Chase way off on a shot. two chaotic possessions. Gotta call TO.

Kam looks awesome though. Not just the scoring. A couple beautiful dimes that were missed too.

Great start but have to answer their counter now.

Shaka sending Zaide a message with quick benching, as he's gotten beat pretty badly by Richmond on two possessions that led to 5 points.  Need him to be a factor.

Also wanting more minutes for Royce..20-25 this game feels needed.

SJU is literally the best defensive team in the country. If you get an open shot. Take it. Royce should shoot that every time in this game.

Zaide's last three, fading to the left, not so much. But of our 16 threes, probably 14 have been good looks. Keep shooting. We're not going to win this game if we don't shoot and hit them. So launch confidently.

Theres no way STJs 7th foul actually came with 30 seconds left. If officiating balances out, it's a comfortable win.

Alright, all things considered while blowing that lead. We did a great job of never allowing SJU to burst ahead. LIke every time they had the ball tied we stopped them. So build off that

Have to be better with the ball. And have to get Kam going again. He had one bunny he missed that's on him. The rest after his outburst was minimal looks

St John's is the Number 1 defensive efficiency team in Ken Pom - didn't realize that until someone posted earlier they had Number 1 D..didn't realize it was in all of D-1, was thinking it was a reference to their BE defensive efficiency.

MU leading is sort of a godsend, don't know how.

5 for 16 from three. Lived first six minutes, died the rest.
Nine turnovers, four by Joplin
Gold and Ross sitting with fouls
Kam going cold
13 points in last 13 minutes

Shaka playing Norman, not Lowery or Owens up 7, was bad. Three fouls in three minutes, just ugh. Probably won't see him again.

Limit those stupid, stupid turnovers and hope the threes fall.  X game part II

Gus rallying about St. John's D after Mitchell takes a poor wide open 3 point shot.

Part of Marquette's problems this season is in a tight game, when their opponent finally takes the lead in the second half, MU's next shot attempt is usually an awful decision. Then of course their opponent goes down and hits a 3.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Yup. Horrendous Jop is back

The man just picks games where he is going to single handedly torpedo a game. All that matters is if he does this in the tournament for a second straight year.

And another foul on SJU shooter.

First year with Shaka that hasn't been enjoyable, this team has been bad for so long. Our best win in months is a team that probably needs help to make the dance

Gold is rarely on Zuby because he has to switch off. Jop and Kam haven't been playing very good position D. Bad night for Jop to play a bad game. Gold picking up Wilcher 30' from the hoop is a bad situation.

What's so disappointing is how did Shaka think this team would be good enough to win anything meaningful. The icing on the cake is him being too stubborn to at least try and get a serviceable big man in the portal who could rebound and play interior defense.

Watching their weaknesses get exploited by every good team over the last two months has been brutal.

On a lighter note, why do some people insist on calling a "contingent" a "contingency".

Marquette had 3 Turnovers against Xavier
Marquette had 17 Turnovers against Saint John's

After leading 24-9 7 minutes in Marquette stopped pushing the pace, started fiddling with the ball and 17 turnovers. Kevin ONeil beat Pitino coached Kentucky with Tony Miller pushing the pace all game.

Seven of of St. Johns best players are portal transfers. We have none, though we have huge weaknesses at point guard and beef in the paint. Shaka might need to expand his thinking if we're going to compete with the big boys.

That was an epically awful performance. 1 for 7 from 3 and 6 turnovers, most were unforced. He was a complete liability.

Kam is one of the best PGs in the country.

The amount of stupidity here after a loss to a top 10 team on the road is something else.

I wish St John's were actually a top 10 team.  I have a feeling the BE is going to have a NCAA tournament reckoning.

Kam is. He's a tremendous player. But results are what? 3-7 vs top of the conference. MU definitely needs a presence in the paint. Indisputable. Are those players on the current roster? Debatable.

Kam's great.

A 16-point loss in which the opponents expose all your flaws and you have nothing approaching an answer for it? No so great.

Yes, our big man depth for next season is a huge question.  I feel very good about Royce, and unlike most, I feel pretty good about Ben at the 5 next season.

But Caedin hasn't shown much and we have no idea what Clark might be bring, although I love having a legit 7-footer.  Not giving up on Caedin but he has a lot of work to do.

Ben played well last Sat vs St.J.  Yesterday was obviously a disaster but he's capable.  It's on him our entire team and coaching staff to get him fking involved offensively.

Ben Gold isn't 7ft. And isn't Kalk on the defensive end.

But I'd be curious how the defense would have looked had Ben stayed in the lane all night

St John's is impressive,  for guys who have not played years together they are in sync most of the time.    The chemistry is there and and they never quit.
