I saw a semi flip-switch today with our guys in the 2H. Very little hesitancy, zip passes and better ball movement, quicker to the loose balls, and rising and firing with confidence. Obviously C-Well had a career game. Props to him. That said down 14, with X playing for their tournament lives, MU responded with a force we haven't seen for some time.
The challenge will be difficult tomorrow but we know we can beat them. 1000 % of the pressure is on them. Mitchell once again will be a big key to this game. The young man had a massive 2H today. Let's go now!!
While the season as a whole hasn't been as charmed as it was in '23 when we beat UCONN, this game has the potential to be just about as much fun. Would love a revenge game where we knock St. John's off in the Garden in the BET on Friday night during their dream season.
Not sure why St. John's would feel a significant amount of pressure.

A 2 seed is still in play for them. Plus, the home court pressure.
We know for one thing that it will be harder for St. John's to beat MU for a third time than it was for them to win the first two times.
Mr. Dodds taught me that.
So....the home team has more pressure on them than the visiting team, right? Since Muggsy said it, it's not even debatable. ::) :o ;D
Beating SJU at the MSG is a big ask. However, MU has been competitive with them twice. Two good games. I am going to stay blindly optimistic. MU gets over the hump this time.

I'm on board. The adjective "blindly" was the clincher, as it removes any need to defend the W prediction with stats or rationality. ;D
Yes, but recognizing that SJU is tough at MSG shows I am not completely oblivious.

are you being flippant here? StJ hasn't had a season like this since when, Walter Berry? Top 10 ranking. 2-seed...possible 1 in play. 'Home' court. Darlings of NYC. They might come out a little tight. RickyP has the StJ program re-established as a beast...which is GREAT for the conference imo, but this team isn't invincible. MU? House $. Just play. Not sure what happens on the secondary market today. On Thursday, there wasn't that many St.John's fans in attendance. In the post-game Rick Pitino confirmed my thought thru out the boardcast.
With 757 points tonight, Kam Jones would pass Markus Howard for first on the all-time scoring list.

Was anyone at MSG last night that can attest to how many MU fans/supporters there were? I ask because although the home crowd will strongly favor St. John's, we'll surely have a noticeably louder crowd presence tonight than we did during our first meeting at MSG.
It may be a home game for them, but I think that the heartbreaking loss on senior night (less than six days ago) and the revenge mentality it creates could be just what we need to pull an upset.

We have to find a way to keep Ejiofor off of the offensive glass. Those second chance opportunities are killers. Hopefully limit him to just 3 or 4.
Do that, stay even in the turnover battle, and make our share of threes and we have a great chance.
Agree w CT and limiting the Johnnies on the boards. Plus hit close to 40% from 3, make some free throws. We can do it.
Was also thinking that our guys have now played a lot of games at msg, should be used to the background and rims when shooting.

One critique. I don't know why we are crowding Richmond at the 3 point line. He can't shoot and it makes it easier for him to drive

They finally see one go through. Jop misses the answer, fine.
But after that out of position on D. Chase way off on a shot. two chaotic possessions. Gotta call TO.
Kam looks awesome though. Not just the scoring. A couple beautiful dimes that were missed too.
Great start but have to answer their counter now.
St.J getting way too many uncontested bunnies. Stop the freaking dribble. Force them left and to shoot over the top. Double with force and turn them over.

Shaka, not calling time outs is one thing. Playing Tre Norman in this game is a whole new form of negligence.
We got guys that can win this game. He isn't one of them.
Our bench had like a 3 game run where they were decent. Wouldn't mind if I don't see Norman play again this year
Jop catches it on the break so has to go to the rim out of control and loses it classic
That was just a bad play by Jop. Have to be smarter.

Jop idk what that was
Tre with 3 fouls is one way to get him back to the bench

Ninety percent of the time that David Joplin dribbles something bad happens. Good God. Is there not one of their 19 assistant coaches who could do something about that in four years?

Quote from: mugrad_89 on March 14, 2025, 06:28:58 PMRichmond literally dragged his pivot foot in the back court – the ref stared right at it didn't call anything.
Plain as day lmao
Jop is in his head. Coach needs to get him right at half.
Tie game with some of the worst TOs and shot selection I have ever seen. We got this
Cmon Jop.
I think we have 9 points in like 14 mins.
Big tip from ZL. Maybe that gets him going.
Is there a D1 basketball player worse putting the ball on the floor than David Joplin? It's beyond maddening.

The coaching that Joplin has received in four years is criminal. He should rarely, if ever, put the ball on the floor.
I hate it when Jop drives.
Really. St. John's is all over us and hardly a call. Shaka was right
Which of the two times Luis fouled Stevie was called a foul?
Hopefully our second half is like the first half of the first half not the second half of the first half.
That was good D.
I think fouls killed our momentum.
The good news is Ben and Chase didn't pick up their 3rd.
Quote from: PointWarrior on March 14, 2025, 06:34:24 PMHopefully our second half is like the first half of the first half not the second half of the first half.
I had to read it twice but yes, I agree
Stop turning it over and we're fine.
Theres no way STJs 7th foul actually came with 30 seconds left. If officiating balances out, it's a comfortable win.
Alright, all things considered while blowing that lead. We did a great job of never allowing SJU to burst ahead. LIke every time they had the ball tied we stopped them. So build off that
Have to be better with the ball. And have to get Kam going again. He had one bunny he missed that's on him. The rest after his outburst was minimal looks
Really hard to criticize the effort.

Lol at the fact that I don't think they were going to call the Jersey grab. I'm usually not a big fan about whining about the refs but holy crap
The turns cost us probably 8 points. And they were unforced. Play with confidence and poise in the 2H.
In the second half Ben needs to decide he's not there to just screen and give dribble handoffs. Man he must be a maddening offensive player to coach at times.
St John's is the Number 1 defensive efficiency team in Ken Pom - didn't realize that until someone posted earlier they had Number 1 D..didn't realize it was in all of D-1, was thinking it was a reference to their BE defensive efficiency.

Quote from: jfp61 on March 14, 2025, 06:22:22 PMHe actually kinda has defense. unlike the rest of the bench.
But honestly we have no bench outside of Royce.
Lowery and Parham were about the same off the bench from what I saw. I think those two and Owens show a lot of promise. Parham will be very good. Norman is physical but it's not translating to effective play at this stage.
At game. Officiating was pretty good for the first 12 minutes or so but then swallowed the whistle on us for awhile. There is no MU bump from other fans here. When SJ made their run their fans came alive. Very good MU presence here all things considered.
MU leading is sort of a godsend, don't know how.
5 for 16 from three. Lived first six minutes, died the rest.
Nine turnovers, four by Joplin
Gold and Ross sitting with fouls
Kam going cold
13 points in last 13 minutes

Make the fking call and move on.
Wait so they make a 3.

8 pt possession? lol
Dumb, Chase.
I might have a stroke when Ejifor finally gets called for shoving a Marquette player under the rim. Its every single possession.
Didn't help Jop helped too much and gave up the wide open corner 3 on this possession
Doubling, then kick out wide open three. Stop the doubling Then that lead to foul. Game changer sequence. Could be seven or eight point sequence.

Gus rallying about St. John's D after Mitchell takes a poor wide open 3 point shot.
Part of Marquette's problems this season is in a tight game, when their opponent finally takes the lead in the second half, MU's next shot attempt is usually an awful decision. Then of course their opponent goes down and hits a 3.

First year with Shaka that hasn't been enjoyable, this team has been bad for so long. Our best win in months is a team that probably needs help to make the dance
How did Joplin "travel" on that?
Jop must have tripped on his own feet
Is it too soon to consider a total roster reset for next year? There isn't a non senior worth keeping. The 2nd half of this season has been tough.
On defence, not sure why Ben always plays so far away from the basket. He is not a guard.
Always ends up one of our guards is trying to defend a guy 6'-11" 270 lbs.

Tough night for the big man so far. And Shaka has Gold guarding 25 feet from basket, quick pass underneath....laayup
1 for last 17 from three, the Shaka offense not working tonight
Oh well, got it to four, then Kam turnovers on three straight hurt. Back to the drawing board
Gold is rarely on Zuby because he has to switch off. Jop and Kam haven't been playing very good position D. Bad night for Jop to play a bad game. Gold picking up Wilcher 30' from the hoop is a bad situation.

We had our chances. A couple momentum changers killed us.
The TechFoul by Chase. When Kam blew by his man but decided to pass out and was picked off.
Then they went down court. Sank a layup and was fouled.

You should probably give up on the program. Maybe terminate watching and posting on Scoop. St. John's is a f'in load on their home court. Our guys give it their all and you post garbage like this?

Seriously unnatural carnal knowledge St John's. I generally root for BE teams in the tourney, but I look forward to their first weekend bow out when they're not allowed to assault the opponent on each possession without a call.

What's so disappointing is how did Shaka think this team would be good enough to win anything meaningful. The icing on the cake is him being too stubborn to at least try and get a serviceable big man in the portal who could rebound and play interior defense.
Watching their weaknesses get exploited by every good team over the last two months has been brutal.

Marquette had 17 Turnovers against Saint John's
After leading 24-9 7 minutes in Marquette stopped pushing the pace, started fiddling with the ball and 17 turnovers. Kevin ONeil beat Pitino coached Kentucky with Tony Miller pushing the pace all game.
Seven of of St. Johns best players are portal transfers. We have none, though we have huge weaknesses at point guard and beef in the paint. Shaka might need to expand his thinking if we're going to compete with the big boys.

Kam is. He's a tremendous player. But results are what? 3-7 vs top of the conference. MU definitely needs a presence in the paint. Indisputable. Are those players on the current roster? Debatable.

Yes, our big man depth for next season is a huge question. I feel very good about Royce, and unlike most, I feel pretty good about Ben at the 5 next season.
But Caedin hasn't shown much and we have no idea what Clark might be bring, although I love having a legit 7-footer. Not giving up on Caedin but he has a lot of work to do.
