What to do about UCONN'S defensive scheme against MU? First, recognize what they are doing. UConn has been very successful playing no-help defense against MU, staying home on the 3 pt shooters, and daring MU to beat them on on one. This is similar to what they did to Purdue. Stay home on the shooters and let Clingan battle Edey.
What can MU do? Recently, MU has started having their bigs roll more instead of picking and popping. Continue that. More off the ball movement. Don't just stand in the corner and wait. Run some off ball action, get some bumps, create space for shooters in another way.
Defensively, do exactly what you did in Milwaukee as far as creating turnovers. Don't let them shoot stupid from 3.
It's worth noting this game is on Wednesday night. It was originally slated for Tuesday when the Big East schedule came out, but moved to Wednesday when they announced the TV time slots.

I agree with this.
I also think that water needs to seek its own level. Went back and watched the game again (I am sadistic). The first half alone, when UConn had a 17-22 point lead for most of it, was in large part to missed layups, in and out threes on our part, a ridiculous amount of missed free throws including front ends of 1 and 1s, multiple missed OBVIOUS fouls on other layups (Owens getting hit in the face, Joplin getting raked on the arm twice by two different players, Chase missing a two handed dunk because he was obviously hit on the arm), ridiculous three point shooting by UConn, and multiple rebounds by MU tipped out of bounds. It was a cornucopia of what could go wrong did go wrong. And that was just the first half. It should have been much closer at half than 13 points.
If ifs and buts were candy and nuts. Hopefully it evens out a little bit though. We are not out talented by UConn. They have some more size.
I anticipate the game Wednesday to be much closer.
Big East games this year have seen a lot of parity and it appears most teams — especially in the upper half of the league — have been splitting their series with one another. It's mostly been the first-time losers adjusting and winning the rematch, so that helps our cause.
My main concern, however, is that McNeely wasn't around the first time, so he's going to be the X-factor. I personally wouldn't be surprised if he has another career game.

I would be surprised. In the 5 games after his career-high 38-point game, he averaged 15.2 pts on 37% shooting (28% from 3), 6.2 rebs and 3.4 turnovers.
He's a good player. He's not Cooper Flagg or Johni Broome. He's no more likely to score 39+ points vs Marquette than Kam Jones is to score 40+ vs UConn. (FWIW, I don't think the latter will happen, either.)
Kam needs a 40 point game before his career is over real baaaaaad.

Not necessarily 39+ points, but I see the potential for him to go off against our defense while Stevie and Chase are focused on Ball and Diarra, and Joplin is on Karaban. I guess I'm simply recalling that we had trouble stopping UConn in Milwaukee (granted, they were hitting everything from deep); so, add in McNeeley and I wonder what he might do.

He's a good, active player, so it's logical to expect him to have a good, active game.
We'll probably try to match up Ross or Joplin or Lowery with him when possible, but we'll be switching a lot because that's what we always do.
If UConn goes wild from 3, it'll probably be impossible to beat them, regardless of what McNeeley does.
So yes, I expect a real good player to be a challenge. Maybe he'll be too good for MU to handle. Or maybe Karaban will stop sucking. Or maybe Ball will excel again. Reed has been one of their best players lately, so maybe he'll be too tough.
Or maybe, just maybe, our guys will be at their very best and we'll steal one in Storrs.
But no, I don't expect McNeeley to have a "career game." Because that was 38 points, and he ain't doing that against Marquette.

There, a more accurate statement in my opinion that will occur at some point during the game.
UCONN favored by 4.5. Marquette coming off a couple of solid wins by margins big enough to provide a counter argument that the opponents are not upper-level BE teams. UCONN has been flukey enough that this game is especially difficult to get a handle on, but I think we might just get our 1st W in Connecticut. And it does not need to be either "(MU) violence" or a "dud". Get a grip Muggsy.

Death by cocktail umbrellas.
UConn seems to present problems for MU because they have good sets and spacing and are patient enough to wait for a good shot.
Even if MU plays good defense for 25 seconds, they can often make two quick passes and get a good look from a good shooter late in the shot clock.
Last year Spencer and Karaban killed them, and this year it was Ball with some help from Stewart. Karaban and McNeely are also capable of making those shots. They're going to get them; you just have to hope they don't make an excessive number of them,or get too many offensive rebounds off the misses.
UConn is nothing special on defense. MU has to take advantage of that by getting more good looks, and making a lot more of them than they did last time. Making more than half of their FTs would help too.

Yeah, UConn is going to score. We can make it more difficult on them but they are an awesome offensive team.
We need to be more decisive and have a better plan offensively tonight. I suspect we will, but if they keep playing us 1 on 1, Kam and Stevie need to beat their guys. Going 5 out more might help to keep their bigs away from the rim.
When the game starts, I'll be about an hour into my flight home from Hawaii. I plan to get WiFi and I hope that means I'll be able to use my YouTube TV app.
I've already set it to record, but there's no way I won't find out the result before I'd get a chance to watch it.
3PT% Against in 3 of our last 4 losses:
-UConn: 63.2% (12/19)
-Creighton: 39.3% (11/28)
-Nova: 57.7% (15/26)
Obviously not the only factor in those losses but definitely a theme.
Reed has been really good lately but UConn shouldn't be able to bully us with physicality the way St. John's did.
Can we do a better job of guarding the 3? Do we double less? Gamble less? Or do what we do and trust that Ball and Steward don't go 10-12 again?
We can't expect to force 20+ TOs again but I do expect us to shoot better.

To clarify, this is exactly what I meant originally. Maybe I used the term "career game" too lightly or simply have the wrong definition of it, but I meant that as in I wouldn't be surprised if McNeely has one of his better games of the season.
Though McNeely might not even be the biggest issue. I also took a glance at UConn's message board to see what they're saying about this game and they all seem to agree that UConn's best path to winning involves Reed taking advantage of our weak interior D. And they're not wrong.

Loving the effort.
Tremendous block from Benny!
What was that call?
Great hustle.
Was Kam fouled there??
Excellent half from Ben.
Ben has been f'n awesome.
Execute here and get a bucket.
A++ defense from Gold this half
Focus Kam. Knock them down.
What a fantastic half.
Those FT's by Kam were light years better than his first two tonight
So much for Yukon being on track for 50.
That was great focus and intensity for the last fifteen minutes. That's the team we saw earlier this year and started to see the last couple of weeks.
Ww can attack this team downhill. Get the three ball cooking in the 2H and rebound. Strong final 3 mins for MU.
GREAT first half. Keep it up (and clean up a few details) in the 2nd half and we can take this game.
Quote from: mugrad_89 on March 05, 2025, 08:49:10 PMWhat a fantastic half.
By both teams. UConn didn't give us much to work with and still up 4.
Quote from: MUEng92 on March 05, 2025, 08:49:13 PMThose FT's by Kam were light years better than his first two tonight
Yeah the form was far better
Overall awesome half. D started to get stops
The offensive Jop that we need. Can we get a full game of it?
I still say we are gonna need Kam to hit something from outside if not multiple. But up 4 at half I'll take it no problem
Legacy game for the seniors tonight. They've shown up so far. Have a game Jop!
Solid first half, every starter had some positive moments. Unfortunately Lowery is like our only reliable option off the bench
Quote from: mugrad_89 on March 05, 2025, 08:49:10 PMWhat a fantastic half.
We're in deep trouble. We have a lead at the half.
Ben's defense and Joplin hitting some shots just makes this team different.
Fun half.
Ben surprisingly good D
Howfully someone other than jop can hit a 3 in the second half
Stevie ghost mode
Quote from: muwarrior69 on March 05, 2025, 08:51:24 PMWe're in deep trouble. We have a lead at the half.
How's Shaka supposed to make halftime adjustments if we're already up?
Joplin's impact huge.
Ok, UCONN playing good but not lights out. We are good. Multiple guys stepping up. One more half like that and nothing crazy from UCONN (LIKE 9/12 3s), and we're good.

Ben's solid defense is not that surprising.
Before my time but was Jop a bit reminiscent of Mark Aguirre in the 1H? Especially with that step back swish triple?
Quote from: Vander Blue Man Group on March 05, 2025, 08:55:07 PMBen's solid defense is not that surprising.
I don't know how good he has to get on defense for people to realize he's a good defender.
Maybe the best first half of the season. Now let's bring it!!! Whatever Ben was going through is hopefully over. His D is so underrated. Please more drive and dunk. Much more.
Quote from: BM1090 on March 05, 2025, 08:57:22 PMI don't know how good he has to get on defense for people to realize he's a good defender.
He needs to shoot 50% from three
Awesome first half, quality basketball all around. We haven't looked this good since early Jan. Helps that Solo Ball doesn't go 7/7 from three eh??
Ben definitely looks healthier but it also feels like that switch has flipped in regards to his confidence. Probably related to feeling better.
We're not turning them over like last time but we're fighting on the glass.
Quote from: MuggsyB on March 05, 2025, 08:57:03 PMBefore my time but was Jop a bit reminiscent of Mark Aguirre in the 1H? Especially with that step back swish triple?
Well, not the DePaul version of Mark Aguirre because the NCAA didn't have the 3 point line then.
Take it to the rim and take good 3s when they're there.
Love RP and DO but took 2 really questionable shots and didn't see much more of them.
Quote from: MuggsyB on March 05, 2025, 08:57:03 PMBefore my time but was Jop a bit reminiscent of Mark Aguirre in the 1H? Especially with that step back swish triple?
I remember and yes. But Aguirre was thicker. Jop is stout but I remember Aguirre had a trunk and thick legs. Right for the NBA.
Jop stealing the opening tip..good omen that he was locked in. Jop and Gold the two most maligned Warriors playing well makes this team so much better.

Yes. Keep going to the rim. Make uconn stop you or foul
Nervous Hurley will have gotten into refs
Beautiful dime and cut.
Let's Gooooo!
Man. That 3 was on line for Kam.
Ben didn't get his money's worth on that foul
Another weak foul call on Gold there.
They get bailed out at the basket right after Hurley complains to the ref.
Kam can get that anytime he wants.
Looked like another double dribble by UCONN
What???? Bull fking sht call on Stevie.
Oh come on.
Garbage officiating again
These last three foul calls, yikes
Shake it off and drive it down their throats.
Let's go now!
Here come the home whistles.
Booing a jump ball?
T up Samson
This is definitely the March rotation tonight.
That's 2 times this game Uconn deserved a T and it wasn't called.
Why both times against UCONN does it feel like we're playing 5 on 8?? Hasn't felt that way against any other Big East Team
Quote from: CountryRoads on March 05, 2025, 09:12:28 PMThis is definitely the March rotation tonight.
The starters?
May have to win this one 5-on-8.
Win anyway. This has been their best 4 mins and it took quick whistles.
Get composure on the offensive end. Jop drive was gorgeous
The idea that Marquette has committed 8 fouls to Uconn's 5 in this game is absolutely laughable.
Hurley was complaining to the ref on that call on Stevie because even he thought it was on his guy.
His complaints clearly affecting the officials calls here to start the 2nd half. Gotta find a way to survive it.

Why Ben?
Gold's first terrible play of the night
Well that was unfortunate.
Great UConn bonus all half
Terrible sequence there
Keep attacking downhill. Get the drive and kick working.
Yeah Chase.
Love Shaka talking to Ben there. Telling him he can't be guarded by their bigs.
Time to grind.
Diarra constantly pushes off. T up Hurley.
Good no call :)
T him up!!
Refs reading scoop on media timeout, gad to give us one
Ughhh.
Come on, Kam.
That was a bad makeup
Kam play smart!!

Refs are a joke this half. Parham didn't touch him.
Can't rebound.
Everything is a foul on us.
Let's go Marquette!
Fouls and inability to get on a run is keeping this great 26 minutes on edge.
Need to find a burst here somehow.
LFG!!
Also, win anyways.
a
And where was the foul? Just a travel
Bonus at 13:34.
Marquette 1 foul per minute
Shocked Jop got the call there.
Can't stop the Jop!
Big East Ball!
Dammit. Of course Karaban makes that.
More political ads! Yuck
This has been a great game.
I'm convinced we are the only team Karaban makes threes against.
We are 2 for 14 from 3.
Joplin has both makes on 3 attempts. Gonna need to knock some down confidently.
Shaka getting frustrated with no fouls on uconn
Kam and Chase have had 2 3's that were 1 inch too long.

T fking Hurley up.
Be careful here.
Kam...chill.

Another ridiculously bad 3pt shooting game ffs this team
Uconn fouling Kam multiple times every possession. No calls.
Yeah not finding a way to pull away plus the foul trouble plus Kam being Oso from deep is not making this final 10 look good
That's not Stevie's game. Me must regain our composure.
We are forcing now and hoping for a foul that isn't coming.
Stevie got hammered. Comical.
Lol Ball smacked Stevie, no call. Shocker.
Grab the freaking ball. Needed a time-out 2 possessions ago.
Feels like this one's slipping away
call a timeout
When MU gets down, they start playing hero ball does not work
Ben completely hosed again. Went straight up.
Stevie gets punched in the f'ing face by Ball and no call. Total garbage
Another garbage call.
Hate refs just ruining the game Ben's straight up.. Stevie gets drilled no call
Refs have completely lost control

True. We're getting frustrated with the calls.

I see the ref blame game is alive and well in the game topic. Y'all need to understand the game a little better.
Shaka waited way too long to call that timeout
Refs are POS's
but this is also just like the other big road Ls
Total meltdown(little early than SJU and Creighton) in the final stretch.
The non-call on Chase's drive is just plain cheating
Another out of control drive.
Seen every player take a bad shot, his offense needs to run plays but they do not have any oh well

Hate to be the guy, but yikes.
No rational person can be watching this game and not see an unbalanced whistle. It's bad. Really bad. But we have to do a better job of not losing our poise.
Anyone who says this isn't one sided officiating is insane. Unbelievable the whistle that we get.
Ben jumped straight up and was completely vertical. That's a gamechanger...but we're supposed to just move on like it has no effect.
So frustrating.
MU zero offense last few minutes - up 3 to down 7 Uconn pulling away, this may get ugly despite being a good game until to 3 mins ago...
Quote from: Judge Smails on March 05, 2025, 09:36:39 PMIsn't time for Sultan to come in and say the refs are doing a fine job.
They are. Our offense has completely stagnated. Refs aren't bailing us out. And they shouldn't.
Refs suck but we're near the end of the game and this team has hit 2 threes. Good luck beating anyone decent on the road with that
MU is losing composure. The refs have got about 4 calls wrong against MU in the last few minutes. Both can be true.
Make some jumpers and it doesn't matter.
Game over. Shaka should have called time out three possessions earlier. Timeout management is the weakest part of his coaching game.
MU will lose this game. Unbelievably bad defense. Things need to change. Layup after dunk.

This is it. If you can't make 3s, a good defense makes your one dimension hard to guard.
the offense is just pass around until someone decides it's time to drive hard to left side of the rim? is there anything else
The officials have not been good, but reality is, they are not been the reason for this run. There was a major change after the missed call in MU's favor earlier on. But that's not the reason for the run.
The TO was too late. Needed to slow down the game and the momentum about 3 possessions earlier.
Lots of time left to settle.

If you can't hit open threes, and we missed too many to count, you're not advancing far in the tournament. The easiest three in basketball is the corner pocket triple. Stevie missed wide open corner shots that killed MU tonight. Kam missed free throws. You don't shoot, you don't win. Defense - blah blah blah. How about an ability to hit a shot?

Yeah Jop was pretty good tonight too.
Would not have left Karaban the hot player in the game 21 points to double Reed who had 4 points with the game on the line. Would have made Reed beat us. And even if Reed would have scored it is a 3 point game. And we have the ball with the dot clock off.

Reed had Mitchell all over him. He wasn't scoring.
Now could we have gotten the rebound?
Gotta know the situation (don't allow a 3) and personnel (don't let Karaban get an open...3). Gold had a brain fade, it seems. But 3/22 from 3 is diabolically bad. So it doesn't come down to one play or one guy. Chase...is he banged up? Need him to do more in these games. I thought Zaide had a break out at Nova...need a little more there too.
Saturday becomes huge. I'm assuming we'll play X in a 4/5 next week. Would that be a must win if Saturday is a loss? Not sure if the BE gets 4 or 5 bids.

The next two+ games are about seeding.
We are an absolute lock for the tourney.

Agree another reason not to double down Reed has Stevie though shorter is one of the Big East Defenders of the year on him. Reed was not scoring. True about the rebound though feel Jop could and would have have crashed the glass had Ben stayed on Karaban. Frustrating. Let's Beat Saint John's.
