Title: Runnin' up that Hall...
Post by: tower912 on February 18, 2025, 10:08:52 PM
Someone made a deal with God
1. Smart use of the bench.  Get them plenty of run against the Pirates.
2.  More pick and roll action tonight with Ben, Royce, and Caedin.  Less pick and pop.
3.  Stevie starting the second half led to a huge collective exhale.
4.  Caedin showed initiative. He didn't make any passive plays. You will finish those one day, young man.
5.  DO with some of those glimpses I mentioned.
6.  Yeah, it was against shootin' hell, but how about some credit for the defense?
7. Joplin took the night off.  OK. Wasn't needed.  Show up against Dixon.
8. The kind of game MU needed after a week off.  Everybody but Joplin had their moments.
9.  With just enough sloppiness to give scoop apoplexy and keep the players humble.
10... with no problems...

Offense looks much better when players move off the ball and the ball moves. Shooters step into shots more confidently and cutters find open space for easy buckets.

Took care of business against a bad team. Hopefully the shooting carries forward.

We did a much better job with the drive and kick tonight as well as guys cutting to the rim.  We also rebounded the ball well.

Team looked more assertive and aggressive, more confident in what they were doing and wanted to do.

Ben and Chase especially looked like they had a confident pep in their step.

Kam shot more confidently and it looked better, he looked more comfortable, now it just needs to fall.

The bench was collectively the best it's been all season, only other game it was perhaps better was when Parham and Owens looked like future hall of famers at Iowa St.
Let's get that back.

The defense was great.

***Not sure if it was internal changes or the competition, but likely a combination of both.
Overall good stuff

The last half-dozen games or so, Zaide is really coming into his own offensively. The D was there even his freshman year, but now he looks so smooth on offense as well.

There in sec 119 tonight-
MU looked pretty crisp most of the game despite some lapses and in/out looks.
The Hall? How could they have beaten UConn?  Mailed it in much of the game. Coach H almost seemed disinterested.
Good effort by the new guys- lots of minutes with plenty of effort.
Caedin had his moments, but his ball handling at clocks end?  Yeesh.
Crowd was there in form, not substance- not much drama after MU scored first basket.
Good rehab type of W.

Great energy from the team just about all night. It helps when 3s go in ... although maybe the great energy had something to do with the 3s going in.

Might have been Gold's best game of the season, and it definitely was his best game in a LONG time. In addition to 10 points and 6 rebounds, he was superb at challenging shots without fouling.

Chase had been in a bit of a funk; not sure why - maybe injuries. But he really was intense and sharp tonight. We need that every game from him.

Kam is thisclose to being the All-American we saw the first half of the year.

Strong showings from Parham, Owens, Lowery and Norman. Owens was especially good - seemed very confident and smooth.

Seton Hall really sucked. I think our guys had something to do with that, but the Pirates Arrrr bad. Their win over UConn will go down as the craziest result of this entire college basketball season.

Over/under was 135.5. Anderson's bucket helped the teams combine for 136. Walk-On Power!

The team looked rested, not rusty.  Maybe they just needed a break.
MU played Seton Hall in Milwaukee after SHU won their super bowl.   Holloway said they practiced horribly, as everyone was banged up.
The looks of unbridled glee were great to see. Owens, Ben.

20-6, 11-4, 95-36.

Love Zaides easy athleticism.  Glad Owens had a game and his athleticism is impressive as well.  Great that Ben broke out but that first layup attempt showed that his right leg is not 100%.  Glad Tre contributed on offense.  He does finish drives well.  Either gets fouled or makes the layup.  Good hesitation and plays off two feet. Some guys have a knack for that and it is a necessary trait for an under the rim player. Agree with 82, Kam is about a centimeter away from booking threes again. I liked the confidence in the pulls last night.  Many in and out.  Don't love Stevie's wrist injury.  Need to tape the left wrist and hope it doesn't affect him too much.  I still cringe every time Jop dribbles. Great game to get some of the cob webs out.

I think they take Villanova again.

An extra true ball handler would have been nice on this team with regard to those turnovers.  Kam was missed while sitting out during a stretch in the second half when Hall extended their defense and pressured the ball handlers. Caedin had a lot to do with it too.

Yes, Ben landed poorly on that first drive and was clearly hobbled.  When they showed him fiddling with his feet, it appeared to me that he had a new style of shoes, ones with more cushion. It was difficult to tell after that.  And I could be wrong.
He played a solid game after that.  Similar to how he played in the first half of the conference season.  A couple of 3s, solid defense, some rebounds.  The two successful drives were a nice bonus.

The defense being so good despite not turning SHU over was encouraging, although SHU stinks so who knows.  Thought the bigs made a slight adjustment in that they were hugging their man on the perimeter if the guy is right at the 3 point line, but not as much if they're an extra 5 feet out like they had been before.  I'm a fan of that.  Can hedge/help on dribble handoffs against guys who are 3 point threats when they're in range.

Villanova in the last 5 games against MU has not shown any real ability to guard. Dixon can't guard on the perimeter and some of their guards don't contain dribble penetration well. They can certainly beat us. They are at home and have talent. But it's a good matchup for us.

The Good
1. Great to see Gold get out of his funk
2. Help defending looked better
3. Great to see us hit the boards
4. 3 Point shooting.  Where have you been.  Welcome for sore eyes
5. The second unit contributed, and you can see the confidence in them

The Bad
1. Stevie not looking to shoot.  Need him healthy and not be afraid to take shoot from outside the paint.
2. Some silly turnovers

The Ugly
1. Seton Hall
2. The end of the first half.  That sequence can't happen.

Zaide, Tre, and Damarius have the potential to be very solid all-round players.  I think once they get consistent minutes, they'll be far more relaxed on the court.  Royce also can be much more than a spot shooter.  The question is can DO and RP get there defensively and on the d-glass next year.
