Are they overrated?
Bruce has earned a chance to take a loss now and again because he has an orange golf bag and is just so damn likable.
OK dudes, rip away. I can handle it. Never said he had the best team, only that I liked Bruce's coaching style, philosophy, and sense of humor better than our own coach. Also, think he'll turn out to be the more successful of the two when its all said and done.
FYI, good riddance to the orange golf bag, its gone. Maybe I'll wager a MU bag vs. a UTenn bag with him this summer.

1) You wrote 2 days ago that you've never met Tom Crean. How do you compare two people if you haven't met one of them?
2) How do you define "successful" in this situation? Wins? Recruits? Rankings? NCAA accomplishments?
C'mon guys. I LOVE Tom Crean. His accomplishments at Marquette stand on their own. But, let's not get in a p!ssing match with 4ever simply because he made some nice comments about the coach of the #1 team in the country who was coaching in our fair city only a short while ago.
Tennessee is very good. They've assembled a team of athletic, exciting players and they have one of the best seniors in the country. Bruce Pearl is a good coach. He made some mistakes early in his career. He paid the price and had to work his way up from the very lower ranks of college coaching. Personally, I don't care for his antics and sweating, but I won't deny he's very good. And you're crazy if you think losing to #14 Vanderbilt on their home court diminishes his coaching ability.
I can't believe people are ripping Bruce Pearl for losing as the #1 ranked team!! Are you kidding? If we ever achieved a #1 ranking, there are some people on this board who would be naming their children after Crean...and I'm nto convinced people aren't already doing that.

Point of clarification: I think Pearl is a very good coach. No issue there. I just don't think he has good character.
My issue with 4ever is that he hid behind the fact that he is personal acquaintances with Pearl and told us we shouldn't pass judgement on a situation that we don't know the details about (Pearl's divorce; Pearl getting kicked out of high school games for being obnoxious) when he does that exact thing with regard to Tom Crean.

I agree that UT is a very good/great program and Pearl appears to be a very good coach. I don't him personally, so I can't really judge him.
(It's actually the same way I feel about our very own coach.)
But, let's be honest, if MU was ranked #1 and got upset... you'd be on this board blasting Crean for losing.
Coobey,
1. You're doing the same thing with Pearl that you are accusing me of with Crean. Of course, that assumes you've never met Bruce.
2. Success is defined for me as NCAA tournment wins and advancement.

Exactly, so why do you do it with Crean?

Because Crean "deserves it".
Not sure I see a clear difference in philosophies - tennessee just shoots the 3 - reminds me of our Diener philosophy.
I've observed Crean enough over the years to know I don't dig him or the horse he rode in on.
Okay - I hate bashing another alum.
I understand

I've met Pearl. Engaging guy. I'm qualified to talk about his sense of humour and whether it's better then Crean's. You are not since you've never talked with Tom Crean.
IMO, your love for Pearl is not independent of your dislike for Crean. It'd be better off not playing the little game of propping up Pearl to knock down Crean and just be straight with it all like PRN. I may not always agree with PRN but at least he's straightforward.
I noticed the l'Chaim a few days ago. Pairing that with Pearl makes me wonder if your feelings are built more on doctrine then basketball. ?-(
I am an alum of MU and UT. I have met both TC and Pearl, though can't say I "know" them at all. I respect both of them, and the job they have done at their respective schools.

Nothing wrong with not liking Crean.
I just question your motives when you speculate all over the map about how "bad" Crean is in certain aspects... while you tend to give a free pass to a coach that you like.
Now, I understand it's because you just don't like Crean, which is fine... but then you have to realize that your strong dislike of him is probably clouding your ability to be objective.
