It's time to find our range and attack from all angles.

With 4 points, Kam Jones would pass George Thompson for 4th on the all-time Marquette scoring list.

With 41 points, David Joplin would pass Tyler Kolek for 40th on the all-time Marquette scoring list.

With 7 steals, Stevie Mitchell would pass Doc Rivers for 4th on the all-time Marquette steals list.

I feel like I'm a bit more concerned about this game than I should be.  Butler has given Creighton and UConn some tough games this month.  Of course, they did lose to Nova at home and barely squeaked by Seton Hall.

For whatever reason, Butler has managed to give MU some issues over the past three seasons. The wins, outside of the one to clinch the league, have been far from comfortable.

2024-25   Home   W 80-70

2023-24   Away   W 78-72

2023-24   Home   L62-69

2022-23   Away   W 72-56

Definitely not a game to take for granted. Brooks and Telfort are legit, and guard Bizjak has been playing pretty well lately. He played his game of the year against us a year or two ago at Butler. McCaffrey can hurt you if you give him looks. Nova and Seton Hall games didn't have the same atmosphere at Hinkle that this game will. Would be nice to jump in front and avoid energizing the crowd. As long as our guys are focused, our pressure should carry the day. Also, small gym = Jop hitting 3s.

These next four games are the stretch I've been concerned about.

I'd take 2-2.

I'm also worried about this stretch, but I think 2-2 is definitely COLE.  We should win tonight and on NMD.  Then grab at least one of the road contests.

They have 8 points this half. Their offense can be ugly at times. Very similar team to Marquette when Marquette isn't shooting well from deep.

Some similarities between the 2 teams, but SJ doesn't have a Kam Jones and MU doesn't have a Zuby.

Title: Re: Butler thread
Post by: PGsHeroes32 on January 28, 2025, 07:51:34 PM
This is another brutal effort early. Something is beyond wrong/broken with this team

Actually come out with a nice start(aside the Jop usual missed chippy).

But then it goes...missed rebound. 3. Kam another rushed layup. 3. Stevie treis to answer with a 3, bricked. 3. Stevie fouled not called. Layup. Time out.

Out of time out. Jop brick. Kam shoots from 40 feet brick. They hit another 3.

Butler literally cannot stop any drive. Yet we are content giving them wide open 3s and then trying to answer those with a team that at this point we can safely say cannot shoot.

Now Norman with the end of shot clock foul on 3 lol

Zaide looks better and better every game. I just keep waiting to see him drive with aggressiveness because I don't want to see him settling for 3s all the time, even though they've been much better.

Not a bad stretch from Caedin there. Very active, the passing and moving game with Kam is nice, he just needs to put it all together and learn to curb the aggressiveness/erratic extra actions.
Liked what I saw though

Not going to win many games letting the opponent shoot over 60%. Might be the worst defensive half of the season.

It hurts that Gold can't score in the post. When the opponent goes small, Gold's size provides no advantage on offense. On D he's left trying to guard quicker players away from the hoop.

We'll see how MU adjusts. Only down 7.., surprisingly.

A bunch of guys dribbling around and then forcing something at the end of the shot clock is not an offense. Incredibly easy to defend. Folks are catching on to Kam's penetration stuff, and they're starting to reject some shots into the seats. W/O a point guard or center we need to be smarter. Like spacing, passing, slashing back door stuff. Like back in the CYO days.

No idea how that earlier foul on Stevie wasn't a shooting foul, especially with some of the garbage they've sent Telford to the line on.

Absurd.

Thankfully Bizjack loves Butterfingers.

These refs are BRUTAL!!

The blocking call on Stevie was bad enough on Telford but they said he was shooting which was bs.

Yet Stevie doesn't get a shooting foul and then Chase doesn't either. He only shoots because it was in the bonus.

Omg!!!

I'm not trying to pile on but it seems like you're basing this on a couple shots falling from freshman. Everything looks good when the shots fall. I know you aren't suggesting that our offense is better without the possibly best offensive player in the country

I'm not suggesting that Carl. But both things can be true. Kam can be our best player by a lot. But our offense can still look more smooth tonight without him.

Edit: for example, that was the best play I've seen all year against the zone. And while Kam was on the bench, it would have been the sophomores who hit some shots. But so did Stevie, Chase, and Joplin.

I assume that this post is satire and sarcasm.

Otherwise, congratulations on being so calm, cool, and collected that you never think or say anything spontaneously in the heat of the moment while watching a game.

I don't participate much in the game threads, but when I look through them I don't see that many comments that are not valid when made contemporaneously as long as you recognize them as spur of the moment and often emotional reactions.

Maybe you're referring to comments made by the several posters that I have on ignore because virtually everything they post is sarcastic or a lame attempt at humor.

Thanks.  And I say plenty of spontaneous things in the heat of the moment.  Just rarely negative.  My conversation with my buddy in the moment at the game was along the lines of Butler won't keep hitting shots like this all game and watching how Matta used Screen only against the back up bigs.  And laughter and friendly banter with our Butler neighbors.   Accurately predicted to them that MU would ramp up the defensive intensity in the second half.  Never said a derogatory word about either team.
