Game day. Nice record. Embarrassing SOS. Cooley did that at Providence, too. Probably wants this group to learn how to win, regardless of competition. Good size, shoots poorly from 3, turns it over. Exploit their guards, don't get crushed down low.
Spend the next week resting Thievies achilles and growing the freshmen.
Guess this might actually be a game. I'm used to considering Georgetown like DePaul due to how bad they've been. Used to be a big game back in the old big east days. They have some young talent and look decent. Has Cooley resurrected the town
The last line I saw was MU -13.5. Vegas is not impressed.
GT offense = a$$

Marquette has really set itself up for a challenge.
Pretty hard to improve metrically when you have to beat decent teams by 20+ every time to get a bump in the computers...
It takes what it takes, however
MU is no longer viewed as a cute little underdog. No longer disrespected.
Sorber is awesome, though the heavy minute load in Big East play has diminished his efficiency. We need the defense to lock in and force turnovers while taking full advantage of minutes he's on the bench to go in runs. I hope to see Gold on the court whenever Sorber is out there.
Anyone going to the game who has a pet bat? Bring it with you. It surely has some January cabin fever and could use a little exercise

Cooley has a well-deserved reputation for being entertaining. The bat is only one example. The way he tried to dodge it and then draped a towel over his head was hilarious. The time he split the rear seam on his pants and wore a towel to cover his exposed BVDs was also great. Maybe he has a thing about towels. ::) His live mic TO's are so heavily censored it's hard to know what he is trying to say to his team. And last, but not least....the brother of a Providence player walking onto the court to protest a foul just as the Marquette player was about to shoot the first FT. Considering that the brother was on parole, it was doubly dumb but, you gotta admit, entertaining.
The bat was my favorite. Yours?

Jonathan Xavier walking on the court was during the Keno Davis era. And Xavier called time out, so not sure what more he could have done in that situation.
Any word on Epps? Gtown board seems to think he'll be rested in an attempt to play Saturday. Played 4 minutes without attempting a shot last Friday after missing a non-conference game on the 28th. "Lower body injury" is all I've been able to find. Second leading scorer.
Easy schedule: someone made a good point about Cooley helping his team know how to win. I think this is a legit coaching technique for a team that has been down.
Dan Campbell used to play-2-win in the preseason in his early years with Lions. Everyone thought it was ridiculous including myself. But the Lions needed to start that somewhere and Campbell had a mentality he wanted to instill.
I know it goes only so far ..DePaul has been like that. Decent record early then kaboom. But if Cooley can get the players, he knows how to win.

Cooley will turn it around there. Not sure if they'll get back to prominence, but they have 3 BE wins this year already. They had 0, 2, and 2 the last three years.

Take Georgetown and the points and fleece Vegas.
After reading the GU board it looks like they will take us to the woodshed so take GU and the points. They are Much improved but according to them we are an inferior team to last year, on paper it might have looked that way but results say different. Expect a Creighton type of game, never put them away until late.

I sadly have to miss this game as it starts at 9am here in Singapore. Chase does not finish drives well.
About time for a Fartley36 sighting...
Joplin and Gold mia!
Idk what's going on. They have no idea what to do on offense. Hoyas have scored like 9 straight possessions. not sure MU is legit top ten
Kind of feels like a Wojo coached team. Luckily I trust Shaka to have some second half adjustments. Just have to get the lead to a manageable level at half.
Jop wide open. Brick.
All year long.
That should have either been out off of Georgetown or a foul.
Ben. Brick.
Gold and Jop can't hit crap
I don't remember ever seeing Ben attempt a 3 on the run

Jop gets embarrassingly stuffed. Somehow winds up with the ball back and hits a 4 point play prayer.
Lets hope that wakes him and the team

LMAO nice drive Chase

Wow

Hope that first half is the pig through the python.
Georgetown was prepared for what we were going to throw at them while we looked lost. Shaka talks about violence but we got punched in mouth that half. The way this team is shooting 3s isn't sustainable, not gonna keep winning with our low percentage

If he's hitting 3s asset.. if missing everything like tonight liability he's just so one dimensional. Can't even block 6 foot guards
Georgetown has all underclassmen in their starting lineup aside from one guy. Up to the starters for us tonight...the upperclassmen. Gotta be better.
A lot of guys had their worst half of the season right there.
I'll admit not watching a single minute of Georgetown play before tonight. Sorber is the only guy I heard about previously and he's been the only player on their team I haven't been impressed with so far.
So far it looks like they want it and we don't GAS. Tough to win turning the ball over and shooting half the % of what your opponent does.
This second half will tell us a lot about the team we got.
Georgetown was ready to play. Hats off to them.
Marquette seemed like this was the first time they ever saw a zone defense. Completely lost. Not sure what to say about the preparation or play?
I was hoping to get it to 6 by half. 9 is not great but if they can get back to being the more aggressive team and if someone can break the zone - Jop might be our only prayer to sit in the middle - maybe we get this one.
I've complimented Shaka on his use of the bench in terms of development but it backfired tonight. Need a short bench in the second half.

Jop having 2 fouls definitely killed their ability to attack the zone, but they gotta have a backup plan. Ross was not the answer in the middle.
Ben and Damarius can't catch a pass today, so it has to be Kam if Jop isn't in.
This makes 4 out of 5 conference games that MU has struggled against mediocre opponents. 3 of those are at home.

There has to be a Warrior that can break the zone.

Going to have to hit threes because they are swatting everything down on the inside. Need to hit threes. We are shooting 29% overall. Ugh. Need to fix that now!
MU just has no strategy against a zone. We don't have 1 or 2 pure shooters who can force a team out of zone by hitting 3s. Last year Oso could handle the ball just below the top of the key threaten back door passes or pass to open perimeter shooters. This team is all drive to the lane and the zone takes that away. I want to believe they can still come back but its going to take 3 things.
1 Stevie, Kam and Jop hot from deep.
2 No more stupid turnovers
3 Defend the backdoor and force GT to shoot from the outside.
Its possible
Need a mid range shooter

Jop should concentrate on D and getting rebounds
That one possession where 3 MU players could get a defensive rebound against 1 GU player but not only didn't but gave up the basket led to my first back to back full throated F-bomb in my basement since the NC State game
Jop with another big bucket.
Quote from: MattyWarrior on January 07, 2025, 08:32:17 PMJop should concentrate on D and getting rebounds
Immediately aged poorly.
Jop with the patented "No...No...Nooo... YES!" drive for 2
Quote from: MUstarman on January 07, 2025, 08:31:47 PMThere are sooooooo many things i want to say about Gold and his lack of BBall skills right now............
Let it out. It's part of the healing process.

Kind of like that slow motion accident that I cannot turn away from.

My daughter is laughing as I just read her this because I was identical other than the f-bomb.
Chase!!!!!

I'm watching by myself so I can yell anything I want
Is Hamilton out of favor? No PT of late.
Gold? Too much PT
This commentating crew is brutal. Sadak is begging to be on the call for a big upset
Ross is the man. Gold should maybe look to pass.
Shades of a Buzz Williams inbound play.
How is this contact not being called
Where was the foul on Chase's shot???
Honestly, should have been flagrant. He intentionally pulled Chase down with the off hand. Not a basketball play and dangerous.
I will say GU seems like the least classy team MU has played this year
Gonna be hating Mack the next 2 years
Game getting pretty chippy.
Never want to be in a position where the officials decide the game . . . And that's where we are.
They really aren't gonna call that? Chase got smashed on that drive.

I can't watch this

Probably need to get used to it.
GU is getting better shots more easily and more consistently
They deserve to win this game.
So many brain dead plays tonight
That's how you lose
Gold has been just freakin awful

Painful. But I have to agree.
Stevie doing Stevie things!
I'm shocked they called that correctly
Never mind
What a play by Ross.
Gold did something good finally!
Brutal passing on a 2-1 break.
Gold barely makes the gimmie. Missed FT? Of course
Wish Sorber would foul out.
It sucks that Sorber is a good FT shooter
Not a foul to take a "charge" when inside the circle?
Quote from: Viper on January 07, 2025, 08:51:09 PMGold barely makes the gimmie. Missed FT? Of course
Of course. Not his day.
Can't believe they almost didn't call the clear push by Mack.
Need to make some darn free throws
I would be pissed if I was #2 also because they haven't called any fouls so far when GU pushes MU players out of bounds
How was that not number 5 on Sorber. Bull Crap.
Hit the front end of a 1-1. Finally.
They do NOT want to give Sorber a 5th. Jeez
That moronic drive by Joplin deserves to lose the game
Quote from: JWags85 on January 07, 2025, 08:55:16 PMThey do NOT want to give Sorber a 5th. Jeez
He committed a clear foul two possessions in a row.
Kam hasn't been the same guy and just totally bothered by georgetowns length
Jop traveled twice before crashing into Sorber so hard to be pissed about a foul not being called
Jop trying to drive against sorber. Lol
Is anyone worse in the country putting the ball on the floor than Joplin?
Joplin looks awful tonight, he can't stand the heat for some reason
Joplin trying to create is a slow motion car wreck.
TG for that reaching, Jop was about to lose it again.
Jones didn't have a good night

Quote from: MarquetteFan94 on January 07, 2025, 08:56:30 PMIs anyone worse in the country putting the ball on the floor than Joplin?
Yes...but the deal is they probably know their limitations and Jop does not
Joplin is incredibly frustrating to watch.
Really wish Gold didn't miss the wide open uncontested layup earlier.
What's the foul bonus situation?
That was an illegal screen. Also, how was that a shooting foul?
Getting the feeling that the officials will decide this game. . .
Biggest Bull crap call ever.
That was a foul on GU
Never mind. They corrected it. Wow. Though.
Worst call I've ever seen....never mind
Pins and needles at the line!!
No idea what that foul was?
SOTG
Funny everyone thought it was called on Ross
Quote from: Johnny B on January 07, 2025, 09:05:47 PMFunny everyone thought it was called on Ross
Because they initially did. The other refs stepped in and corrected it.
Mack looks dazed
No 4 point play!!!

Stockholm syndrome from some of the previous calls.
What does Cooley have to be pissed about?
I've never seen a ref huddle to determine which team the foul was on.
Eh, I'll take it.
Anyone else notice Kam refusing to drive to his right today?
Is Georgetown the third best team in the Big East?
Both coaches are happy? Cooley doesn't look happy to me
No doubting the SOTG tonight

They look the part tonight. Will be curious to see where and how they finish.
Have not watched a lot of other Big East teams, but Georgetown is top 4 in the league. Don't want to see them in March.

Them and St Johns. We will see.
Next year they could contend.
Every negative dismissive thing about GT ain't true.

They took us down to the wire missing their 2nd leading scorer. A very good Epps.
Free throws matter.
Hoyas hardly suck.
Will be a tough game for MU in DC.

Gold?
Gold played a decent defensive game. Offensively he looked like he did not want to shoot. But we needed all of his D and rebounding
Quote from: cheebs09 on January 07, 2025, 07:46:38 PMKind of feels like a Wojo coached team. Luckily I trust Shaka to have some second half adjustments. Just have to get the lead to a manageable level at half.
It's nice to have a coach where you have faith they will get it right at halftime.
Quote from: Herman Cain on January 07, 2025, 08:20:32 PMHave been rooting hard for the squad here in second half, plane with no wifi about to take off hopefully rest of Scoopers can channel positive vibes to MU
We cant let Mr Cooley leave the joint with a win
Just landed and saw the good news . Thanks to all for denying Mr Cooley
Sounds like Ross really stepped up all game long while some of our main guys struggled. If we can win with Kam having a bad night, I'll take it. We shot an atrocious percentage fron 2. What happened to Ben and did we just crap the bed vs their zone? Ty.
Marquette is 53-6 at home over their last home games or 48-3 at home over their last home games which ever you prefer

GT was a physical force in the pa8nt. Hard to drive against them. Altering and blocking shots. We got s9me though... just enough. GT is better that I thought they would be. But Chase saved the dat and all who hit the free throws at the end of the game... Stevie, Kam, Jop....
Interested to see how GTown ends up.
They have 0 Tournament profile whatsoever so not sure what they'd have to do to get in at this point, but they look like a solid team.
Also have just a 1 point win against Seton Hall, got routed by 20+ against ND. Tough team to figure out, but it seems that they are a young team starting to figure some things out.
Quote from: PGsHeroes32 on January 07, 2025, 07:20:05 PMBen looks completely not ready to shoot today. Like he doesnt expect the ball to even come
Or, at least on his first missed three of the night, he expected the pass to be more accurate.
Pete Carill used to say that the most underrated play in basketball is a simple pass.
When the pass is off target it makes the shooter look bad. He's getting his mind and body prepared for a shot and a bad pass throws that off. On that first miss I knew before he let it go that he was going to miss because the pass disrupted his balance.
On that blown wide open layup in the second half I had no idea why he didn't just go up and dunk it.

Article about Szelc:
https://onmilwaukee.com/articles/szelcfeature
Paul Szelc is the number three ranked referee on Kenpom at the moment.*
He's finished the season ranked in the top 10 five of the last six seasons.
I honestly had never heard of him before now.
* Kenpom's ref rankings are not very scientific; it's based on the number of times per season a ref gets a high profile assignment. It assumes those typically go to the best refs, when in reality, you could just have a travel whore like Driscoll who will ref any game anywhere
Not knowing a ref's name is a good sign.
Quote from: tower912 on January 08, 2025, 02:08:22 PMNot knowing a ref's name is a good sign.
Only reason I know ref names is due to bad reffing.
Or in the case of one, because he's a generally nice guy and our paths crossed occasionally.
2 of those 3 Pregame announcers on CBS were wrong not picking Marquette.
Marquette shot 27 Free Throws and Georgetown shot 13 Free Throws

I agree with all of this. But I'd counter that, if the pass pulled Gold out of his shooting position, he simply shouldn't have shot it. It's not as if the shot clock was about to expire or anything.
