Title: Hoya suxa
Post by: tower912 on January 07, 2025, 06:26:55 AM
Game day.  Nice record.  Embarrassing SOS.  Cooley did that at Providence, too.  Probably wants this group to learn how to win, regardless of competition.  Good size, shoots poorly from 3, turns it over.    Exploit their guards, don't get crushed down low.

Spend the next week resting Thievies achilles and growing the freshmen.

Guess this might actually be a game. I'm used to considering Georgetown like DePaul due to how bad they've been. Used to be a big game back in the old big east days. They have some young talent and look decent. Has Cooley resurrected the town

Marquette has really set itself up for a challenge.

Pretty hard to improve metrically when you have to beat decent teams by 20+ every time to get a bump in the computers...

It takes what it takes, however

Sorber is awesome, though the heavy minute load in Big East play has diminished his efficiency. We need the defense to lock in and force turnovers while taking full advantage of minutes he's on the bench to go in runs. I hope to see Gold on the court whenever Sorber is out there.

Cooley has a well-deserved reputation for being entertaining. The bat is only one example. The way he tried to dodge it and then draped a towel over his head was hilarious. The time he split the rear seam on his pants and wore a towel to cover his exposed BVDs was also great. Maybe he has a thing about towels.  ::) His live mic TO's are so heavily censored it's hard to know what he is trying to say to his team. And last, but not least....the brother of a Providence player walking onto the court to protest a foul just as the Marquette player was about to shoot the first FT. Considering that the brother was on parole, it was doubly dumb but, you gotta admit, entertaining.

The bat was my favorite. Yours?

Jonathan Xavier walking on the court was during the Keno Davis era. And Xavier called time out, so not sure what more he could have done in that situation.

Any word on Epps? Gtown board seems to think he'll be rested in an attempt to play Saturday. Played 4 minutes without attempting a shot last Friday after missing a non-conference game on the 28th. "Lower body injury" is all I've been able to find. Second leading scorer.

Easy schedule: someone made a good point about Cooley helping his team know how to win. I think this is a legit coaching technique for a team that has been down.

Dan Campbell used to play-2-win in the preseason in his early years with Lions. Everyone thought it was ridiculous including myself. But the Lions needed to start that somewhere and Campbell had a mentality he wanted to instill.

I know it goes only so far ..DePaul has been like that. Decent record early then kaboom.  But if Cooley can get the players, he knows how to win.

Cooley will turn it around there. Not sure if they'll get back to prominence, but they have 3 BE wins this year already. They had 0, 2, and 2 the last three years.

Pregame as Chaperone starts in about 2.5 hours (5:30am in Asia). Muggsy is alive and well, he was right and tuckered out after spending all of yesterday paddling around in the surf looking for Dugongs to hug and kiss.

Nothing is open that early but Muggs acquired some Arak from Bali in an attempt to speak to God before we illegally stream the game from an illegal gambling den.

Also entertaining was the Prov forum once they realized their beloved coach was heading to Georgetown.

After reading the GU board it looks like they will take us to the woodshed so take GU and the points.  They are Much improved but according to them we are an inferior team to last year, on paper it might have looked that way but results say different. Expect a Creighton type of game, never put them away until late.

GO MU.

I sadly have to miss this game as it starts at 9am here in Singapore.  I fully expect not only a detailed account in the game thread of us shredding this team, but an outstanding post-game synopsis of our complete dominance .  Attack early, often, with zero hesitancy, and destroy their will.  It's that simple.  :)

To be fair its just one bozo repeatedly stating we are not as good as last year and overrated as proven by our results

So far it looks like they want it and we don't GAS. Tough to win turning the ball over and shooting half the % of what your opponent does.

This second half will tell us a lot about the team we got.

I was hoping to get it to 6 by half.  9 is not great but if they can get back to being the more aggressive team and if someone can break the zone - Jop might be our only prayer to sit in the middle - maybe we get this one.

Jop having 2 fouls definitely killed their ability to attack the zone, but they gotta have a backup plan. Ross was not the answer in the middle.

Ben and Damarius can't catch a pass today, so it has to be Kam if Jop isn't in.

MU just has no strategy against a zone.  We don't have 1 or 2 pure shooters who can force a team out of zone by hitting 3s.  Last year Oso could handle the ball just below the top of the key threaten back door passes or pass to open perimeter shooters.  This team is all drive to the lane and the zone takes that away.  I want to believe they can still come back but its going to take 3 things.
1 Stevie, Kam and Jop hot from deep.
2  No more stupid turnovers
3 Defend the backdoor and force GT to shoot from the outside.
Its possible

GT was a physical force in the pa8nt.  Hard to drive against them.  Altering and blocking shots.    We got s9me though... just enough. GT is better that I thought they would be.    But Chase saved the dat and all who hit the free throws at the end of the game... Stevie, Kam, Jop....

Interested to see how GTown ends up.

They have 0 Tournament profile whatsoever so not sure what they'd have to do to get in at this point, but they look like a solid team.

Also have just a 1 point win against Seton Hall, got routed by 20+ against ND. Tough team to figure out, but it seems that they are a young team starting to figure some things out.

Quote from: PGsHeroes32 on January 07, 2025, 07:20:05 PMBen looks completely not ready to shoot today. Like he doesnt expect the ball to even come

Or, at least on his first missed three of the night, he expected the pass to be more accurate.

Pete Carill used to say that the most underrated play in basketball is a simple pass.

When the pass is off target it makes the shooter look bad. He's getting his mind and body prepared for a shot and a bad pass throws that off. On that first miss I knew before he let it go that he was going to miss because the pass disrupted his balance.

On that blown wide open layup in the second half I had no idea why he didn't just go up and dunk it.

He's finished the season ranked in the top 10 five of the last six seasons.
I honestly had never heard of him before now.

* Kenpom's ref rankings are not very scientific; it's based on the number of times per season a ref gets a high profile assignment. It assumes those typically go to the best refs, when in reality, you could just have a travel whore like Driscoll who will ref any game anywhere

Not knowing a ref's name is a good sign.

Only reason I know ref names is due to bad reffing.

Or in the case of one, because he's a generally nice guy and our paths crossed occasionally.

2 of those 3 Pregame announcers on CBS were wrong not picking Marquette.

Marquette shot 27 Free Throws and Georgetown shot 13 Free Throws

Parrish made sure to tell Walker and Wally they were wrong as well.

Quote from: wisblue on January 08, 2025, 06:27:45 AMOr, at least on his first missed three of the night, he expected the pass to be more accurate.

I agree with all of this. But I'd counter that, if the pass pulled Gold out of his shooting position, he simply shouldn't have shot it. It's not as if the shot clock was about to expire or anything.
