Maybe I've been living under a rock, but where did he come from? I really like the guy and don't care for country music.

His parents

I had no idea who he was until half time of Thanksgiving as well. And I was the only one at the gathering.
Apparently missed the memo on this guy

Ya....that's when I was introduced as well. I was pleasantly surprised.
Talented dude, but his path is amusing. People have thrown shade at guys like Post Malone or MGK who start out in hip hop and then pivot to other music after they are successful and call them inauthentic. Meanwhile Shaboozey was a hip hop artist for the majority of his career, granted with some ambition to cultivate a non-typical sound. But then he hired a new manager, pivoted to a country sound, and blew up.
My thought? Who cares. It's a brutal business and if people like your music in some fashion, good on you. Shaboozey has a couple catchy tracks and a likable persona, get your money my man
My kids were impressed at Thanksgiving that I could name the guy who originally sang "Tipsy." (I know that's not the name of Shaboozey's song.)

Well said JWags. I don't know much about the guy but I found him entertaining and he actually performs live.

As a millennial who was in college from 2003-2008, Tipsy was a foundational song in my life. Basically the entirty of my collegiate experience and into my early 20s, you couldn't spend an hour in a bar that played Top-40esque music and not hear it.
It's probably Top 3, if not the top, one hit wonder of the mid to late 2000s for me
He was the musical guest on SNL last night.

Here is another song he has performed

"Booze" right in the name. Must be good!

I prefer my country, "traditional"

Had heard the name but had no about his music when I saw the halftime show and I immediately looked him up on Spotify. Really enjoyable music. Of course, for a while I thought Travis Scott was a white country artist.

Pretty much is, tbh

There's tons of performers in this generation who are awesome live, Muggsy. You just gotta find them.
