Title: CBS regional coverage for GT game
Post by: 1990Warrior on February 26, 2008, 01:25:51 PM
I just realized that I am screwed because I live in SEC country.  Any suggestions for how to get the game over the internet etc.

This will probably affect others as well.

Does anyone have that map that shows which areas get what games?

Or do they just have that for the NCAA tournament?

You mean the game is not national?  It is National Marquette Day and a lot of folks across the country, including those of us in SoCal, will be attending game watching events.  I sure hope this does not cause a problem!!!

BTW, Chicos, are you going to make it to NMD this year?  I know some folks on this board will be attending.  It would be fun to meet each other.

I have the pleasure of watching Alabama at Ole Miss.

Does anyone know if the radio thing at the go mU website works - it is better than watching the ESPN ticker.

My day and the next week is officially ruined.

Ditto that. Northern CA is split between SF and SJ and both will be at bars that have access to the game...so you SHOULDN'T be without the game!

Here's the list of sites you could possibly visit:
http://www.marquette.edu/alumni/events/nmd08.shtml

Worse case scenario: call around to the bars.

It better be national.  I know that is the primary consideration when they schedule National Marquette Day -- a nationally televised game.  It's been much easier the last couple of years because we've had a lot of nationally televised games.  This requirement caused us to have a Thursday evening NMD party in 2006 because there were so few games to choose from that year.  As the local coordinator of the event, I had a lot of conversations with the people at Marquette about the absurdity of a 9:00 PM (EST) event.  Marquette simply refused to have the event on for a game that was not nationally televised -- even though every major city has countless sports bars who can pick up all of the ESPN package games.  Needless to say, attendance was down that year.

Hopefully this year will be better attended.  I'm the coordinator in Cleveland again this year.  If you're in the area, I hope to see you at Shula's 2 in Independence.

I'll defer to Chicos, but it looks to me like we are the only 1:00 p.m. (CST) game on CBS.  The earlier game is Duke v NC State, but that starts at 11:00 (CST).  There are two games on the schedule for the 3:00 p.m. start time:  Miss. State v Florida and Texas v Texas Tech.

The worst year was when they had National Marquette day on February 14th, Valentine's Day. If your significant other didn't go to MU, that caused a lot of problems. Overall, I've always had a great time on National Marquette Day.

True.

Anyone remember the Valentine's Day game at ND in 1990?  Man, that was the bus trip from Hell.  That was my first Valentine's Day "with" the girl who eventually became (and still is) my wife.  She stayed in Milwaukee; I took the aforementioned bus trip from Hell.  She'll never let me live that down, but at least she knew from the beginning where my priorities were.

Thanks for the research and sorry for the false alarm.  I am pretty sure that I am screwed because my local CBS station says they are putting on SEC basketball which they always do. I could not watch ND/SYR for the same reason.  Luckily, I can drive up to Cincinnati where they will be having a get together which I probably will plan on doing.  Thanks for the link 77NCAAchamps.

They must be pre-empting then which normally CBS mothership would not look to kindly on unless there was big $$$ involved....in your case that might be exactly what's happening.

Pretty easy to find out for me, what city are you in?

I cannot help you out with a bar, but you can usually catch the games online at http://www.channelsurfing.net/

I am in Dusseldorf, Germany, and there are no bars showing the games here, so I have been watching online......

London is full of American expats though...I am sure with a little internet research, you will find a bar with a satellite feed or some other connection.

The Sports Cafe in London is a great place, and I would highly recommend it. Think Dave & Busters/ESPN Zone. There's an outside chance they'll have the game on live. Whenever I go to London, that's where I go for American sports. It's right near Piccadilly Circus in the heart of the city.

They're showing the NCAA tourney live in a few weeks.

When I was in Dublin for part of my honeymoon, we went to a place called Cassidys to watch Bears/Dolphins last October. It's pretty much in the city centre and not a bad place.

I tried to google it, and got this back, which is probably pretty helpful.

Cassidys actually showed the MU/Nova game last night!

Having spent my last 3 vacations in Spain and Italy I would suggest doing some research on tripadvisor.com message boards for the indicated cities.  I did a lot of reading on those boards before my trips and remeber numerous people asking questions of where they could watch NCAA football games last fall and NBA playoff games last spring.  In the message boards you can do searches and likely will find a place to watch the games in any of those locations.

I know Rome has a number of irish pubs, not a lot different than ones here, that have satellite TV for soceer and rugby and can pull in US braodcasts.

You're screwed.  Looks like your local CBS is pre-empting and will put on Alabama at Mississippi in that time slot.

The other option is to find a sports bar with a BUD (big ugly dish) that would have the CBS national feed out of New York.  Directv and Dish do sell distant network signals for New York and Los Angeles to customers around the country, but it's difficult to get them because of waivers needed, etc.  But, if you can find an HD bar in Lexington with HD DNS signals (they will be on channels 80 or 81) you would be ok.  Just call them up and have them put it into their HD receiver to see if they receive either one.  80 is the New York CBS in HD and 81 is the Los Angeles CBS in HD.  Because DIRECTV hasn't launched HD locals in Lexington yet, this would work for you if they have an hd account.

Best of luck

Tnaks for all of your work Chicos. Most of the sports bars in town are now using the sports packages from direct TV.  The link from 77 champs says there is an alumni event up in Cinci which is not to far away.  I will make the drive.   Who knows - it may be more fun than watching alone.  Has anyone ever been to one of these?

For those looking for locations in London and Dublin to watch games there is a thread on the Georgetwon board with a lot of good info for locations and satellites, etc.  Just go to resources on the left side of the page and fo to other teams boards, etc.  Very convenient having the links to the other boards right here.

Add DWT to the list of Galway lovers.  Best city on earth!

And there IS a place where you can probably see some American Hoops while you are there.  When I was there, a place called Scotty's was one of the only places to see NFL games.  They bill themselves as an "American Bar and Grill"...heavy on Burgers.  They love it when yanks come in and they are happy to accomodate any US sports on TV (if they can get it).  Food stinks, but the beer is cold.  And it did feel more like "home" than other places.  That's probably your best bet.

It won't be hard to find US hoops in Dublin.  Lot's more sports bars in the US mold there.
