5 point plan should do it.

Do you get the ball out of his hands?
Stevie and Chase are accomplished on ball defenders. I assume both will get an opportunity.
Both are good teams. I hope Joplin and Gold find their range, that Owens and Parham continue to progress.

This. And Kam keeps doing Kam things.
I think that we take a page out of UConn's playbook in the championship game and just harass the hell out of Loyer and Smith. Give them a steady dose of Stevie, Chase, Zaide, etc. Kaufman-Wrenn will get his 20 and we will win. I feel pretty good about Tuesday.

That's kind of where I'm at. Our guards have to dominate but obviously Kam can't get into foul trouble. Rebounding concerns me. If Jop and Ben can knock down those open looks it changes everything.
Purdue hasn't lost a non-conference regular season game since the 2020-2021 season. 39 straight non-con wins. 4th longest in D1 college basketball history.
Purdue doesn't turn the ball over, and Marquette relies on turning teams over. Think we'll have to shoot extremely well from 3 to get this win.

Agree. Strange title for the thread, but no surprise. ;D
Not that it helps much due to roster changes in both teams, but we gave them all they could handle in W. Lafayette 2 years ago and a Hell of a rally last year. We're due for Jop and Ben to hit some 3's. The record you listed is scary though. Even taking out the cupcakes, the streak is impressive.
The home court and their big guy being out should tilt the game slightly in our favor. Though they are an extremely good program led by 3 upperclassmen who will likely all play 35+ minutes. It would be a tremendous win.
I think that Braden Smith is overrated as a PG. We can turn him over.

I'm not sure there's a point guard in the country that's better than him.
Kam Jones???
Quote from: Juan Anderson's Mixtape on November 18, 2024, 10:56:02 AMKam Jones???
Yeah I'd take Kam, but I'd ideally like someone next to Kam to run the point guard duties. Whereas with Smith, he's a point guard no matter who's on the team. The guy's averaging a hair short of 10 assists per game.
MU is gonna have to be so disciplined defensively in this game. I worry about that since we haven't faced a great shooting team so far this season.

Purdue against Bama was crazy impressive with only 3 TOs. And you could make the case thats obviously the game they took most serious. But I wouldnt say they dont turn it over
16,13 and 10 TOs in the other 3 games. The 10 came against a Yale team that only forced 9 and 3 Tos vs UIC and Minny as their other 2 teams with somewhat of a pulse they played.
Not saying we will force Purude into a boat load of mistakes(probably unlikely) but Im also not willing to say we wont be able to force 13-15 and really swing the game.
My son graduated from Purdue last May, so I have been following them pretty closely over the past few years. You always root a little bit for where your money goes:) I like Braden Smith but stand by my assertion that we will make his life tough on Tuesday. Loyer is only a problem if you leave him alone, and I don't think that is going to happen. I will remain bullish on this one.
(Per ESPN)
"Purdue made history when it took down No. 2 Alabama at home on Saturday. Along with continuing some win streaks, Braden Smith stood out from the night. He had 17 points, 10 assists and 6 rebounds, becoming the third D-I player in the past 25 seasons with 15 points, 10 assists and 5 rebounds in a win over an AP Top-2 team -- joining Gerry McNamara vs UConn in the 2006 Big East Tournament and Dwyane Wade vs Kentucky in 2003 Elite 8."
We need retribution against Smith for being mentioned in the same breath as Dwyane.

An impressive 1-0 in true road games during that streak.

We turned him over twice last year and twice in 2022. That wasn't far off his average in either season (1.97 last year and 2.67 in 2022). It's a small sample size, but he's actually turning the ball over a bit more this year than in years past (3.25).
I watch a lot of Purdue basketball. Smith is awfully good. If anything, I honestly think he's a bit underrated. I think that Stevie, Chase and others are up to the task...but historically Smith has played pretty well against Marquette.

My daughter graduated from Purdue in 2023, and we watch all their games together. They've essentially been my number two team over the last five or six years. I think your assessment is pretty much spot on. I do worry about Loyer a bit because this team has been known to give up some open threes.

When you've won 39 straight regular season non-conference games and you've played neutral court games against UNC, Villanova (when Jay Wright was still the coach/they went to a Final Four), WVU, Gonzaga, Duke, home against Marquette and Xavier, neutrals against Gonzaga, Tennessee, Marquette, Alabama, Arizona, and a home game against Alabama, I'm pretty impressed.
Smith is great but we've got pretty good options to contain him.
Trey Koauffman-Renn might be a tougher match-up for us. 6-9/230 and put up 26-8-4 against Bama, including some nasty post-ups that I'm not sure Jop or Ben would stop.

Some 'expert' analysis from Purdue board:
"Missing Ighordaro and the PG (Kovak or something?) But their starting 5 of Kam Jones, Stevie Mitchell, Chase Ross, David Joplin, and Ben Gold were all major contributors last year."
I saw all of the money came in on marquette early, lotta sharps trying to take advantage of Purdue's high profile upset against Alabama.

Ah, yes, Marquette legend Styler Kovak.
I can see Chase as the primary defender on Smith with Stevie also checking him and both using their size advantage to get the ball out of his hands and pressure him as soon as he crosses halfcourt. Don't let him do a drive and kick to Loyer for three point shots, make them swing the ball on the offensive end where MU's ability to rotate out on shooters more quickly will take away open looks.
