Title: Twitter Alternatives
Post by: TallTitan34 on November 11, 2024, 01:24:50 PM
Twitter is becoming unusable.  Half of my "For You" is Elon tweets, a quarter is similar content, and if I'm lucky a quarter might be some Marquette related content.  If I search for something, completely unrelated content pops up unless I sort by latest.  The last few days I have been unable to upload video like I've done for years because the frame rate is too high.

Since the election several Twitter accounts (non-political accounts) have reported losing thousands of followers.  I don't know if bots are being purged or if people are just sick of what Twitter has become.

Anyway, I'm curious if anyone has tried Blue Sky or Threads as a Twitter alternative and if you have which you prefer?  My problem with Blue Sky used to be that they didn't have video but that has now been addressed.  Threads is ok but doesn't seem as straight forward as Blue Sky.

Blue Sky > rest

If you need to, you can use Blue Sky directory to find your twitter follows... its a chrome or firefox add on.

So, without this getting political, and I'm not sure it can because it is a highly political topic but the mass exodus over to BlueSky the past week was wild.

I deleted Twitter for the reasons you stated above.  I had kept it for news feeds.  Sports, local, weather, traffic, political, etc., but the curating algorithm made it increasingly harder to have that stuff at the top of my feed.  In addition, every third post was an ad and the worst part was, the ads started to become unblockable or unmutable.  I was over 10,000 blocked ads and muted.

Worst yet was having conversations over innocuous things such as "Bucks might not be good" with Bucks friends always invited 3-4 responses from bots about gambling or other things.

Threads is nearly as bad.  It's Instagram of these types of services.  Half the content is bots and it's messier than even Twitter to curate.

Bluesky is wide open now.  No invite needed.  A lot of Packers folks made the move and you've started to see many more national guys and gals make the move to at least post links to their things.  Still needs more but starting to see a lot of familiar faces.

They've begun to allow videos, GIFs and the like as well.  They've pushed a lot of useful updates through to recapture original Twitter.  You can also find mass block options for users that have certain profiles or use obvious bot activity.  You can even prompt it to block anyone with Badgers in their profile.

It has a ways to go but of all of them, it's currently given you the best option to curate your feed and find people interested in your content.

Sky Follower Bridge is the add-on's name. It's... okay. It gives you a list of same names/usernames and you have to figure out who is the same person, but you can follow right there.

I have several lists for players, coaches, athletic department, MU social media, etc. on the MUOverload Twitter account.  I'll see if I can replicate them over on BlueSky if they have accounts.

I created a Bluesky account when someone here gave me an access code. I followed a few people but didn't really head back until this weekend. As I was going through my Twitter follows, it didn't really hit me until then how many of my follows just have stopped posting on Twitter both recently and long ago.

I am only following about a third of the people that I had on Twitter. A lot of "institutional" accounts don't have a Bluesky one. But I also used it as an opportunity to drop a bunch.

The site itself is so clean. Reminds me of early Twitter.

Minor Blue Sky complaint that won't matter to 99.9% of users:  I can't upload videos longer than 60 seconds.

As someone looking at other people's posts, I kind of like that limit.

As someone who wants to post the Marquette Pray video, I dislike that limit.

Most aren't returning. And observers quoted in articles about those companies you named are merely speculating that the companies might return. And then only to protect their financial interests from the far-too-powerful guy who told them to "go fook themselves" not long ago.

This from Financial Times:

Lou Paskalis, chief executive of marketing consultancy AJL Advisory and a former media executive at Bank of America, said some marketers were likely to reallocate spending back to X as "political leverage", such as if they were seeking government contracts. He added companies would seek to get in the "good graces of Elon" ...

Elon tweaking the algorithm to boost his interactions was obvious from day 1 of him taking over.  It's also why they tweaked the block function because he had been blocked by so many folks.

The tweaking to promote a particular political party isn't a surprise either.  It's certainly not the only social site to do that and it happens on both ends of the spectrum.

It's the natural progression of sites like that.  From user friendly to something the complete opposite of that.  It's the users choice to stay or go.  If you stay and complain about what you're seeing, well, hard to have sympathy for you.  It's clear what you're getting.
