Aw man. What a high school legend he was. I remember being disappointed when the late local news said he was going to UNC instead of Marquette.

Two players, Ricky Olson and Joe Wolf, would have been the difference, hey?

Wow, pretty shocking.  Young Hutch took it hard when he chose Carolina.  Rip.

100%. I'm from WI and the same age as Joe. I remember MU recruited him hard.

Yep, his recruitment was highly profiled and it seems he was down to MU or NC for a long time.  At the time he was doing things few guys 6'10 were doing.  Handling the ball, passing, taking his shots 15 feet and out.  He by no means fit the stereotype for bigs back then.  And he was dominant in high school and everyone wanted him.  People thought he could return MU to glory.  But it wasn't to be.

He never produced to his hype but was a solid college player (believe he stayed 4 years) and then a first rounder who was a serviceable journeyman role player in the NBA.

Helluva coach from all reports, too.

Didn't know that but not surprised.  High character and a winner.

I believe his brother Jeff was on the Tar Heel team we beat in '77.
