Like any other exercise/sporting activity, recovery is needed.

You may over doing it and not allowing for enough recovery, hence the nagging injuries and pain.

When you're in your 40s and are getting nagging injuries from a sport made for people in retirement...

Jes is right - I do need to spend more on recovery (and stretching)

Who dat, yung boi? I'm past my 40s and partially retired.

At any rate, if you played one game against me in singles, I'd have you wheezing and out of breath (pawz). At the park tonight, of the 150+ people out there there was about 25% older than me. You know not of what you type.

Singles pickleball is still not much running, to be fair

Lots of stopping, starting, quick bursts (pawz), etc. Depends who's playing. Big time cardio, big time calorie burn

Against wads, I could move ze all over the court at my will.

I have no problem admitting you'd beat me in pickleball.  Never stepped on a court in my life, and don't plan to for at least 30 years, when I get to the age most people play.

People like what they like. Odd that you would choose to participate in a topic that you won't have interest in for 30 years.

Glad we all got JayBee's personal update on his pickleball schedule.  I know I was waiting on pins and needles for it.  I'm sure all of Scoop was with me on that.

Sam Hauser was a star at MU for 3 years. Aaron Rodgers was a Super Bowl Champ and 2x MVP in Green Bay. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the US, maybe the world.

Anders Carlson was a place kicker.

Counterpoint, Sam was a nobody who won nothing at MU, was a frontrunner who jumped to the defending national championship program and won nothing there, Rodgers has been on the Jets for 2 years now, and this topic wasn't a general Pickleball discussion, the title is literally "Pickleball Updates" and was BeeJay's schedule for the week, as if anybody cared about his pickleball abilities or schedule.

Anders was the best player on the Packers last year, according to very knowledgeable Scoopers.

Anders Carlson was the Packers best player last year.  People forget that.  The feedback from Scoopers in private messages have been overwhelmingly positive with regards to the topic.  In fact, many Marquette fans afraid to post on Scoop because of the woke mob have sent me messages thanking me for speaking out for Anders.

It is. Different sports. Have run into a number of "screw pb I'm a tennis player" people. Which is fine.

Pretty easy to spot newbies coming in from tennis. Tourney last week ran into a 23 college tennis player.. lots of times they've got a mean forehand but are not great at the non volley zone.

Huge tournament on deck at 8a tmrw. My goal is to medal. #PrayersUp

Pickleball is a silly sport, in a good way.
Played with some 4.5 guys and was a blast.

Took me a bit to adjust for sure but the strategic aspect of it since hitting a winner is such a luxury vs tennis, but as a doubles specialist it does carry over angle wise.

Pickleball is actually really nice when you're coming back from a leg injury and working your way back to tennis. Good few of the guys I play with have done that.

In the late 1980s and 1990s there was an awesome number of Northwest tennis and racquet clubs in the south Minneapolis metro.  Do they still exist?

Yes! Some do (eg, Bloomington). Life Time bought em about 20 years ago I believe. The Bloomington north location is Pickleball-centric and highly regarded for good play

Congrats. I still suck.  A few key things I need to fix to level up to 4.0.

My doubles partner who is also on our MLP team pulled their plantar tendon. Ortho says rest at least two weeks... so we have a replacement for this weekend — and next week undecided. Questionable on the IR. Huge tourney next week - over 600 competitors expected.

Welp, I recently moved.. so playing at some new spots, but also traveling back to the old neighborhood and everywhere else in between. OUR sport is strong.

Thursday, started a new league at Le Dome by Lucky Shots, which recently opened (Grand Opening Party is today) and happens to be a 6-7 minute drive from the crib. Went OK, but I should have dominated consistently throughout the evening.

I'm slowly getting better, but also suck. If you're a 3.7 or under, I feel like I'm better than you and I should win. 3.8-4.1 we've got some competition - let's go!! 4.2-4.3 I might have a chance but will probably get embarrassed. 4.4+ different world, I'm wasting their time.

On deck for the long weekend:
Saturday - Open play at Le Dome grand opening 11am-12:45pm [then racing home or to a bar for the game].

Sunday - 8am - ??  Amateur Pickleball Association tournament at Mega Minnetonka. Playing mixed doubles -- the cutoffs got crazy close - BARELY got put into a lower division (3.5-4.0, 41 years old and up) but we were .001 on DUPR from getting put into a higher division and would have faced a team with a 4.7 guy and 4.6 20 year old gal. Yikes. This is a tournament where I need to prove where I'm at. Need to medal, period. Obviously the outcome of the Marquette game could influence my day and into tomorrow morning, but hopefully I will be ready in what will be a bone chilling day in the Twin Cities.

Sunday part 2 - 4pm-6:30pm - new league at Dropshot in Shakopee, MN -- "Squads". Teams of 4 compete in a somewhat MLP style league... almost like a doubles dreambreaker -- women play until someone hits 5.. then men play til someone hits 10... first mixed to 15.. last mix to 20 for the winner. I don't know what the flow of this is going to feel like.. kind of goofy, but should be fun. Will likely be completely spent from the morning tournament, but hopefully will be wearing some new hardware and inspired.

Monday - 1pm-3pm at Dropshot. Our team rented a court to practice/play. Maybe a little drilling, but playing on a court with video.. so, taking video of game play for analysis with "Save My Play" app. #AdvancedStats #PicklePom

OTHER NOTES...

A couple of months ago I switched from the Joola Perseus (old gen) to the Six Zero Double Black Diamond and have incorporated a lot more spin into my game.

No, but worried a lot this weekend about the ol Benz starting after being outside a lot.

Sunday 8a - tournament in Minnetonka (medaled, but Third place.. went 5-1 on the day... champs were sandbaggers)

Sunday noon-2:30 open play in maple grove

Sunday 4-630 Squads league (4 player teams) in Shakopee... we went 6-0 and beat a couple of very good teams.

Looong Sunday w a lot of travel and effort, but highly successful and rewarding

Hi guys. My DUPR has continued to lag a bit (I believe) vs. how well I'm playing due to the l o a d s of weak-level DUPR league games I had early on ~a year ago.

I'm now a 4.0, but may be a tad better *e.g., 4.1 to 4.15.

There are still tons of little improvements I can see .. low hanging fruit (pawz) that can make me better... so, looking forward to continued improvement. Would like to be sitting at 4.3-4.4 late summer.. but we'll see if I can pull it off. Fighting through multiple injuries but still getting it done for the most part.

If the comp is a 3.6 or below, they're in trouble. 3.7-3.9, I feel like I should beat up on 'em pretty good. 3.9-4.1 or 4.2... really depends. Good level of comp for me right now, but there are some where for different reasons it's a "oh, I'm way better" or "crap this guy is a stronger player than me right now" within that level. Just depends.

The biggest change in recent weeks for me I think has been seeing the court. Placement and decision-making has improved a lot, though much more to improve upon.

In a couple of leagues now, both at clubs that are fairly new to me but that I really like. One is a stated 3.5-4.0 where I'm on court 1.. top guy is a 4.2 with a gen 3 joola whose serves and power overall are ridiculous. July 1 these paddles are effectively banned and with good reason IMO.

New one starting up next week... 3.6-4.5 men's ladder league.. hoping to wind up at or very near the top court in that league.. looks like a good amount of 4.3+ guys in that one.

Finally, have played singles (and also 2 v 1 with me being the 1) a tiny bit and love it. Just need to find the right people to play with. It can be a lot of work and I'm worried about crazy injuries, but it's like a different game and very fun. Then again, some of the rallies are quite short in the singles game as compared to doubles.

Great mix lately of open play/"fun" and leagues/tourneys. I do enjoy just working on different things in open play and trying to be a good ambassador for the sport. Have met many great (or at least interesting) people from all walks of life, nationalities, ages, etc... it's an odd, maybe cult-ish bond.

Didn't play outside a ton last year.. but am gearing up for the outdoor season now and will look to get in some early AM and late PM sessions this spring/summer/fall. There are four newish courts a few hundred yards from my place.

#pray

Incredible. Well, probably 88% of people react well. Some get salty. Lots of grunts, lots of yells, lots of words of encouragement and paddle-slaps.

The unique thing is.. I play in a lot of doubles pods.. where there are say 5 people in your group.. and you play one game with each person.. so, I speak words of encouragement and give daps to the 'opponents' at times, because that will be my teammate.

Big day, guys.

Men's doubles tournament this afternoon. 18 guys, 2 pools of 9. You play one game with the other 8. Top 9 from pool play go to championship round; bottom 9 go to bad player round. Then, repeat the play-with-8 deal, with scores reset, to determine medals.

On paper, I'm ranked #3. There's no excuse for not reaching the championship round. My goal is to medal. 16 games at this level is a lot. Open to all ages, so it'll be interesting to see how big of a factor fatigue is as the afternoon wears on. #pray

-----
Current leagues:
Tuesdays 3.6-4.5 men's ladder league
Wednesdays - mixed ladder league, outdoors

Upcoming tourneys committed to (many more to come):
Today, Men's round robin tourney
Sunday, May 18 - Mixed doubles at Minnesota Majors Event #2
Friday, August 15 - Mixed doubles at Pints & Paddle's Summer Slam and Jam - huge event with 1k+ participants expected

-------------
Last Saturday I entered my first men's singles tournament. Lost the first three games, but learned a ton - my strategy was lacking at first. Started figuring things out in bracket play and wound up taking home the bronze medal.  Absolutely a different game, and quite wearing on the body. Lots of short, sharp bursts and insane amounts of grunting.

-----------
Currently demo'ing three paddles. Today, I'm not 100% decided on which paddle(s) I'm going to use at the tourney. Dangerous situation. I like the Six Zero Double Black Diamond 14mm, but am not super confident in my drops or net play with it.. I may go between that and the Six Zero Ruby 16mm and/or Six Zero DBD 16mm, depending on the opponents.

Indeed .. Pickleballers have a tendency to want to tell you their story, how they started, how often they go, how they got their childhood friend to start playing, how they stubbed their toe and how awful it was for them not to play for 12 days, how their second cousin Sally from Nebraska plays, and of course, how PB got it's name from a boat and NOT the dog named Pickle because that was after.

For a beginner what is a decent,  not  real expensive, package to buy with paddles, balls, net?  Prefer an Erasy net and net structure set up without a bunch of instructions needed.

I don't want to end up with junk that's broken and in the garbage after a few uses, but also haven't really played much so don't want or need to go in for expensive stuff either that might not get used a lot.

I was surprised to find out most courts don't have nets set up already. Would also like to be able to set it up anywhere there is pavement if the courts are full.

Thanks for any input.

We had to make a rule on our tennis team that you can't play pickleball the same day before a match because guys were hitting volleys into the bottom of the net and not covering the court.

Don't have a net system to recommend. I bought one early on for my sport court, but rarely used it -- there are many outdoor parks and indoor clubs -- I would go there and not set up your own net / court. Not sure there are great options at a reasonable price that is easy to takedown/store/put up.

Ball - Something like the Franklin X-40 outdoor ball is a good bet... or seeing more of the Vulcan XPRO flights.. (outdoor balls are usually used on indoor pickleball services... I'd say the only times I see indoor balls are on gym floors.. but can also use outdoor balls there).

Paddle - So many options, and with major deep pockets it ain't no thang to spend big $$$. That said, if I was looking for something cheap.. I might consider a couple of paths, I suppose...

1) Six Zero Quartz. I think it just comes in 15mm; $90. Might be a solid beginner paddle..

2) Get crazy and try Temu. There's one group I play with .. and now like 5 of the guys are using freakin Temu paddles... I've tried a couple and they're OK. I think dudes are paying like $40 for them and swear they are great knockoffs... these are intermediate/high-intermediate players... think 3.7-4.0 guys. If you're just playing a tiny bit... might be worth a try.

If you really want to dive in.. a lot of people going with the latest version of the Joola Perseus... $280. So fricken poppy... I may try it again, but just not for me at this time.

I'm currently using a Six Zero 14mm Double Black Diamond ($180)... but also adding a Six Zero 14mm Ruby ($200) to the arsenal (in transit now).

If you want to look at the data behind different paddles, https://www.johnkewpickleball.com/ is a good resource.. might be a little bit difficult to follow the information if you're new to pickleball, but it's a handy data resource.

EDIT: 30% off Six Zero Sapphire through June 1; normally $140, now ~$100

Cheapskate!

Many paddle companies have sent out communications to customers that "we may need to price jack you because of tariffs".

It'll be interesting to see how pricing changes over the next couple of years as WE continue to GROW our sport... not only with equipment, but clubs in how they program and price in different markets. This summer has seen most places fall in line and offer 'all you can play open play' deals for the summer.. I love the amount of options we have to play different places in the Twin Cities... not to mention having a new 18-court outdoor spot nearby.. which is drawing some pretty good players.

If you're playing once a week and want to be the best version of yourself, I think spending $100 on a paddle is very reasonable.

If you're playing 3-4 times a week and in uber competive groups, every edge matters so I could see a $250+ paddle.  Think of it like golf. Most guys wouldn't blink at $1000 for a set of clubs.

IMO, if you want to make the biggest upgrade...get court shoes.  If you're out there playin with running shoes on you're not doing yourself any favors.

Definitely need good shoes. I found some that work well for me (Wilson Rush Pro Ace) and I buy a few pairs each time they go on sale. I'm playing ~6 days a week, and after 2 months they are pretty worn.. 3 months I've gotta switch 'em out. [Only significant issue has been right toe, which has grown in width by like 9 times].

Paddles, shoes, overgrip, tape/weights, paddle cleaners, bags, etc. add up.. not to mention gear (have resisted eye wear but may go that route at some point.. have had some close calls) and medical stuff (knee braces, elbow brace, biofreeze, leg massagers, etc).. oh well, it's been worth it.

The amount of Marquette conversations is incredible... last week ran into a gal who lived on my floor in Campus Town junior year.. hadn't seen her ~30 years but we were at the same open play.. yesterday, was at a park and got into a game with an older gentleman (70ish?) who was a Xavier guy.. he was excited to see the MU gear... 'We are the Big East! Let's pretend our opponents are the Big Ten!'. We won 11-2.

Gotta get ready for my men's 3.6-4.5 league tonight... need a good outing after a miserable performance last Tuesday.

Sorry, I think the pickeball craze is a little annoying, but it is hard for me to claim that it isn't a sport. It's a physical activity that includes a method of scoring to determine winners and losers.

It's an eSport.  Elderly.

Not true. Sure, I know many 70 year olds that could beat up on you in pickleball, but a 4.0 50 year old beats a 4.0 70 year old consistently. The reality is that many tournaments break down divisions by age, often by 10-year groupings. It's a perfect example of your #FakeNews #Lies.

Could LeBron hang with Royce Parham, or no way?

LeBron is still in his early 40s.

I'm sure there are 70 year olds that could smoke me in pickleball.  I have better things to do than swing my arm while being stationary and cover an entire side of a court.

I had an old 4.0 get mad at me for moving him around the court. Take that for what it is worth.

I don't play Pickle bc I think it's the most taxing sport ever.  I swim for that workout. I play Pickle bc I do think it's a good test of athleticism (some speed, some coordination, some brains) and I think it's a good way to get together with friends and have a constructive hour or two. We (4 couples) played for 3.5 hours on Sunday --- a great way to spend the Holiday weekend. We also drank a few beers so we were probably net Zero on calories burned BUT imagine if we didn't play Pickle...we'd be in the red.

Yeah, wads doesn't know what ze are talking about.

Nonetheless, that sucks about the old grump. A VAST MAJORITY of folks seem pretty cool, but I definitely come across some whiny jagoffs here and there on the court.

Yesterday morning (park open play), I returned a serve between my legs -- I do this occasionally -- it's a terrible shot -- doesn't look cool or graceful and makes it more difficult to place the ball and put pace on it, but it's entertaining to myself and usually gets a chuckle out of other players... but,.. I think we were up like 8-2 when I first did it in this game.. and the guy is like.. 'I don't appreciate the showing off'... wasn't sure if he was just joking or really irked, but the next chance to volley he gets, tries to rip one right at me, but got eaten up by my answer. Screw him.

How in the world did you not return it between your legs on the very next serve?

100%. I will say the amount I pour sweat and the steps taken, heart rate, etc. is BIG TIME. At this point, it's also a big exercise in mental discipline for me. And I've met many great people from all walks of life and backgrounds. Saturday there's a group of us meeting in the AM to play, then having a BBQ at one of the player's houses in the afternoon. Probably will be a crew of 20 or so.

I also love that there are so many 'ways' to play.. can be elderly folks that wads envisions just slapping the ball around to 'stay active'.. that's cool.. or can be a friendly open play with randos where you need to adjust down as needed.. or DUPR recorded sessions where things get ticked up a bit.. DUPR leagues... DUPR tourneys.. DUPR tourneys with $$ and prizes on the line.. it can be so casual or extremely tense and competitive.

I didn't notice until today actually.. that there was a PPA Pickleball game for PlayStation released last year. Probably awful (at least compared to other sports games), but I'm tempted to just throw the $30 or whatever at it to give it a try.

Maybe I'll get the PS5 game and burn as many calories as going out and playing.

In a bit of a weird area now... sitting at 4.1 officially, but may be a tad better.. so many people I've play/played with are in the 3's.. but now I feel like I shouldn't do like 3.5-4.0 open plays with them.. all level open plays are hit and miss.. sometimes there will be a number of 'advanced' folks that tend to stick together and that works.. other times, just need to really slow it down and practice on certain things... it's still enjoyable, I just have a hard time reading individuals -- some like paying tougher competition, while others I think get a little irked. Oh well.

Today, doing a 4.0+ open play.. but there's over 30 people and it's not verified --- that said, if there's a bunch of folks not sniffing 4.0 (I think there will be), I'm inclined to not take it too easy since they signed up for 4.0+.

Next up:
Saturday 7am - Men's Doubles. Rough start time in a decent-sized weekend tourney that has ~400 participants, but I'll be ready. I rarely play men's doubles, but did a cash-prize one a week and a half ago (that got locked down because of the shootings in Champlin and Brooklyn Park, MN) and it went ok (first loss came in semis). Hoping for a good showing...

Sunday 2pm - Mixed Doubles. My partner is from Holland, but went to UC-Berkeley. Instead of matching uniforms, we have agreed to wear our respective school gear which are very similar. #JordanBrand   This will be an interesting one, as we know/are friends with several of the other teams... she plays Women's Doubles Saturday afternoon, so less rest time.. and I will probably throw back 19 beers (courts are connected to a taproom/restaurant) while watching matches of friends in the afternoon Saturday.. but the 2pm start time gives some space for 'recovery' before Sunday.

Time to get #LostInTheFight

PS - equipment updates

Switched from Six Zero DBD 16mm to the 14mm a while back... but then copped a Six Zero Ruby 14mm... which I struggled with, so went quickly back to the DBD 14mm... and it's working really well for me. Feel like I have way more power and pop with the Ruby, but don't really need it and not great controlling it.. my feel with the DBD 14mm is really good now, and have comfortably moved to a backhand twoey that feels great.

Tried some cheap overgrips from Amazon... some rando brand that was crazy cheap. They suck. Grips feel like mush quickly -- going back to nicer ones.

Other notes -

Still making some stupid decisions and have plenty of attainable path to getting markedly better. Sights set on 4.3-4.4. After that, will need to make some fairly big changes/improvements.

Knees (and one ankle) are shot. Can't imagine playing without knee braces on.

2.5 weeks ago won a 18-guy tourney.. two pools of 9.. from those games, went into a championship pool and consolation pool.. I went 6-1 in the champ pool to win the gold.. the association that put it on has social media posts it does... have had a number of people come up to my at open plays / parks / etc. and say congrats after they saw me on the Gram and FB. #HumbledAndBlessed

Shot 80 today.  Had to par the last 4 to do it.  6300 yard, slope 126.  Two way miss with the driver led to way too much punching out of the trees and wedging on.  Good speed with the putter.  Lipped out 3 times, alas, but made a 30 foot bomb with 5 feet of break on 17 to keep the dream alive.

Bro is wearing knee and ankle braces to cover a 20 by 22 foot area with a ball that moves like 35 mph in a non-contact sport.

Anyway, congrats!

We got our tennis teammate to promise to stop playing Pickleball within a week before a match vs a good team because it makes you actively lazy on the tennis court.

Haven't played volleyball in years and know nobody cares how my pickup or rec league basketball games go or what my schedule is or what I wore to play in.
