Safety Update: MUPD reminds drivers not to leave valuables in unattended vehicles
In response to an uptick in vehicle break-ins across the City of Milwaukee, Marquette University Police Department is reminding drivers on campus to remove valuable items from their vehicles. Perpetrators are breaking car windows and grabbing visible/accessible items of value.
If you witness a car break-in, do not engage the perpetrators. In looking at recent trends, most of these crimes are committed by organized, larger groups of people.
Be a good witness:
Stay safe. Keep a safe distance and do not draw attention to your presence.
Call MUPD at (414) 288-1911. Share as much information as you can gather.
If you observe any suspicious behavior or fear for your safety at any time, contact MUPD at (414) 288-1911 or through the mobile Blue Light feature on the EagleEye app. To utilize the mobile Blue Light feature, enable location services on your phone.
Good advice.
I leave all my cash in the car. Store jewelry there, too.
Safest place I can think of.
I love the Herman didn't wait for a new safety alert, just reposted one from the old thread.
Safety Alert: Don't read Scoop! It's been shown to cause dead brain cells in white mice.
That's racist, hey?
Thanks for starting the thread, Herm.
I saw a dentist in a parking lot. Pretty sure they were eyeing valuables.
Did they have magnifying loupes on? May have been trying to find your jewels, aina?

The ones with the lesions?
In my day was perfectly safe to park on the street.
It's never been "perfectly safe" to park on the street.
Nobody broke into covered wagons.
Crime is a problem in and around the MU campus. It always has been. When we are honest with ourselves, we can all come up with crimes that happened to, near, around us during our time at MU.
So, I am glad they are reminding students, faculty, employees, and visitors to be prudent with what is left visible in parked cars. I am glad they caught the kid wanted for assault. I hope they catch the hooligans breaking into cars.

It is if your car is a piece of sh!t. Thieves may not always be geniuses, but they are smart enough to know that their chances are better with cars that, if they do not contain cash or jewelry, might actually be worth stealing.

According to the 1969 Milwaukee Police Annual Report 5036 cars were stolen. According to the 2023 milwaukee crime maps and statistics report, 6277 cars were stolen.
Now there were more people in the city of Milwaukee in 1969 then 2023, but the Milwaukee metro is now about 250000 people larger and suburbanites cars that are stolen in the city count to the citys stats.
You also have to take into account that the amount of cars per household has over doubled so there are a lot more cars on the street.
Conclusion, you are misremembering

Cars were easier to steal back then. Just use a coathanger to go through the window to pop the lock, screwdriver to get to the wires to hotwire. At least that's how the movies showed it.

Dental tools seem ideal for breaking into a car and hotwiring it.

The photo was taken in 1966 and back then the MU campus was not very car friendly. If cars were stolen or broken into, very few were on campus as parking spaces for faculty were far and few, and null for students. That is why you see so many cars parked along West Wisconsin in the photo.
OK, my comment was a little tongue in cheek.
