Oddball from Kelly's Heroes R.I.P.
Now I'm pondering the possibility of a tiny atom on my fingernail being an entire universe.

He had a lot of smarmy, sly and bombastic roles, but I think I'll remember him best for probably his quietest, most understated role - as the sympathetic dad in Ordinary People.
Mary Tyler Moore and Timothy Hutton got most of the pub (and deservedly so), and the movie also included Judd Hirsch and Elizabeth McGovern, but Sutherland was outstanding in that year's Best Picture winner.

Excellent performance in Ordinary People. That house is 5 houses down from my grandma in Highland Park, IL.
I agree he was excellent in Ordinary People.
On the other hand, while it wasn't his fault I guess, I absolutely hated everything about The Day of the Locust.
Kiefer looks so much like him.
Really good, incredibly versatile actor. RIP
Just watched him in Eye of the Needle and the Dirty Dozen on TCM. Great actor.
RIP. Backdraft is a personal favorite.

This movie is a favorite of mine too and I can't explain why.
Strangely the last time I was in Chicago I ended up watching as it was just starting as I channel surfed past HBO.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Or as President Snow in the Hunger Games series. A full and varied cinematic career. RIP.
The Professor in Animal House.
The father in Horrible Bosses.
A phenomenal character actor.

Give him a break. He only had 24 hours to perfect his look.
In a career full of incredible roles and performances, I think one of his most underrated/lesser known is in 1900.
Wild movie with a monster cast...and he was absolutely terrifying and chilling
