I'm sorry, and I apologize for my vulgarity, but it's really that simple. And it's terribly, terribly, sad. Because the opportunity was right there. We were tight from get-go and simply could not make open shots. This loss will sting for quite some time. That said, we will be back but I am just astounded by our performance with all of our experience and what we have seen the last two games.
We did. Completely choked.

Felt like 2003 FF game against Kansas.
Very disappointing because if we shoot anywhere close to normal, we win by at least 20.
Probably one of the disappointing teams in a long time. Really good season that ended with ass whoppings and a final choke job. It's sad to say but that's how this team will be remembered

for as great of a career as oso has as well........I'm not sure you can just gloss over how bad it ended in the tournament. dude was abysmal. what happened?
Where were the freshmen? Why not give them a chance at one of those open looks.
Really think we could play that game 100 times and we'd win >85 of them
Oso is my biggest ?? ok Kam and Joplin shot like crap and played bad but Oso it was like he had no care or something...had multiple times guys would go right over him for rebound because he didnt box out...he couldn't catch a cold...missed a wide open dunk..numerous other things..guys played so tense
We need some guards that can hit 3s with consistency other then Kam...Stevie is an awful shooter..Kolek has never been consistent and is obviously gone...then you got Norman and Lowery Sean Jones and forwards coming into recruiting class...Joplin has work to do on everything

Much more succinct, and accurate.
12.9 percent from the 3pt line. The B team could've shot over 20.
Another epic, embarrassing MU collapse/choke in the tournament.
2003 FF lose by 30+
2013 E8 score 39 points as a 3 seed
2017 20 pt loss in the first round
2018 19 pt loss as a 5 seed in the first round
2022 32 pt loss in the first round
2023 can't get past the first weekend as a 2 seed
2024 get manhandled by an 11 seed in the S16, led for 2 minutes

It just sucks. And you can say "we had a bad shooting game," which is certainly true, but personally, I think it goes well beyond that.
What I did not understand was why we looked so tight and really could never string together consecutive buckets like we have all year. It was reminiscent of the Butler game. You have to attack inside more when the ball isn't falling. Beyond that, you could see the frustration on our guys' faces essentially all game. There was never a moment (at least one I can remember) where I saw that fire to find a way to overcome the missed shots early. I am absolutely devastated and feel awful for the entire team, Shaka, and the tremendous MU fans.

The tightness and the poor shooting seemed one in the same to me. Who knows what happens in this game if Kam and Jop hit their first jump shots.
This will probably be a controversial take here, but I think the area for improvement moving forward is gameday psychology. Shaka actually talks about it very eloquently, generally through the framework of approach goals vs. avoidance goals. But talking is different than feeling. Gotta find a way to feel the nerves as excitement and energy instead of anxiety and fear. In that way MU has reminded me of recent Boston Celtics teams. So skilled, so connected, but struggle to maintain a psychological edge in the biggest moments.

If you look at those two plays to close the 2nd half, this is where I sorta get what you're saying. A missed dunk and then three missed FT's. The impact of that is enormous. Very sad.
Everyone copes in their own way. Some of this stuff is crazy but I'll just ignore it.
But these guys aren't robots. crap happens in college sports because it's played by 18-22 year old kids. To lose because of an all-time cold shooting night sucks. No two ways about it.
I'm bummed I won't get to watch them go after a Final Four, but this doesn't take anything away from these past two years in my mind.
They won 70% of their games. Won a regular season and league title. Packed out Fiserv. Ranked in the top 10 damn near all of this season. It's been a fun-ass ride. I've been there for every game of it and I'm grateful for it, even though tonight hurts.

I didn't like:
1. Choosing to double team Burns like he was Shaq. Why not force him to beat us by scoring 40. Not sure he had stamina to do it.
2. Lack of ball pressure and loose approach to D for most of game
3. Oso disappearing. We missed his toughness and leadership as vet on the team, he disappeared at end of year
4. Believing our guards were better than their guards. Kolek played well, hard but all other perimeter players failed
5. Shaka not recruiting someone who could consistently knock down a 3

It will be interested in how Shaka progresses in his roster construction. He has gone all in on culture, and we need the right culture/talent mix. Jop is the best high schooler he has recruited to MU thus far. If he's not going to use the portal, he's going to have to do better than that. (And he actually recruited Jop to Texas.)

We have 3 point shooters who can pad their stats against weaker teams. What we need is consistent 3 point shooters. Consistent 3 point shooters are hard to find. In this NIL environment they can command top dollar

I didn't even think NC State was anything great tonight, but they were very active on the defensive end. They made MU work to get anything in the paint, with the exception being Kolek who was quite dominant in taking it to the hole in the beginning of the game.
It definitely was a true team loss as other than Kolek, pretty much everyone had a shaky or bad game. As others have said, it was weird to watch how tentative OSO has been lately, not just tonight. I felt bad for Jop, when he missed those 3 FTs to end the half, it was obvious he was the equivalent of a golfer with the yips, or a pitcher who could no longer throw a strike. The biggest problem with Jop, he kept thinking the next shot would go in and he'd get back on track, but it never happened.
I did think MU did play pretty good defense in the 2nd half that gave them a fighting chance. Unfortunately their offense was just so awful it didn't make any difference.
I said before the tournament that Marquette is definitely a streak shooting team, and sometimes those streaks are bad. Unfortunately, this bad streak lasted the entire game. You can't even say that NC State was right in their faces contesting, many of these were wide open not particularly difficult 3s. The midrange game is a lost art in college basketball these days, but tonight it would have been nice if anybody on MU had that sort of game to make up for the crappy long distance shooting.
Well, for the most part, it's been a fun year to watch this team. It just sucked at how badly it ended. Tonights game was like a slow torturous death and while losing sucks, losing in a humiliating fashion REALLY sucks.
This was a tough loss. The team was tight and not ready to play from the start. The defensive strategy in the first half was terrible and got Marquette in a double digit hole. We settled for jacking up 3's early in the shot clock instead of continuing to drive to the basket. Expected some halftime adjustments but there didn't seem to be any. Not sure about not playing the freshmen the last two games and barely using Gold. Big switch from the regular season and signaled no confidence in those players. And why did we end the game with two unused time outs? Shaka had a deer in the headlights look too often on the sidelines in the 2nd half,
MU has now gotten bounced by an 11 and 10 seed in back-to-back years as a 2 seed. Hate to say it but MU has really under-performed in the post season. Regular seasons have been fun, but post season has been dreadful based on expectations and seeding.

can't disagree. legacies are made in march..........this team was extremely underwhelming in march 2 years in a row
Most disappointed with how OSO finished the season. I can't remember a player disappearing like that. I hope it isn't a personal matter
I'm going to predict Oso comes back.

I can't imagine that's a possibility but he was definitely not himself.

The Other Team Had Better Players. We didn't have the talent to compete at this stage of the tournament .
I love our guys and they were very fun to watch over the of the last two years .
NCST played better but they are not the better team. MU missed soooo many open looks. This stings. Stings bad. No blame, just a no show from MU. Shizzz.😞
To beat the dead horse:
Marquette went 4-of-31 on three-pointers tonight (12.9%), the 1,331st instance of a team attempting 30+ threes in a game this season in Division-I
Only one of those teams shot a lower percentage than Marquette (Furman, shot 12.1% vs Chattanooga Jan 6).

Highly doubt that happens. He went through senior ceremony and my guess is he keeps to plans of moving on.
Oso announced before the season that this was his last college season. Kolek, nut that he is, might have an outside shot of returning (especially if a giant NIL bag is procured?). But even if he wants to I think Shaka would do right by him and tell him it's time to move on.

I've begun to wonder if this is the case—he has not seemed like himself in a few weeks and I just wonder if there was something non-basketball related that has impacted him. I hope he is ok.

Why? Because of all the NCAAt success he's had?
He's been great but Shaka and Marquette were his vessel for that greatness.
What can he improve on in college?
Winning big games and becoming a star in the big stage, like the Villanova comps folks around here have had for him.

No chance. He is gone.
Tyler .. should get drafted. He's done enough, finished well. No reason to stay in college besides pride/bad ending (that frankly, could repeat.)
Oso .. hurt himself a ton in the past 30 days, it's sad. If his goal is the NBA, he's got two choices .. play overseas/G-League and hope to get noticed .. or stay in college another year where the competition isn't as fierce.
I'm not an NBA scout, but I've stayed at a Holiday Inn Express before, so I know.

As much as I respect Shaka for not divulging what is going on with Oso, everyone knows something has happened, injury, sickness, personal, etc. If he doesn't get right for NBA combines, he won't be drafted.

Oso has a lot of skills when he is on his game, and it's an unusually weak draft. That said, I don't think he's elite at anything when you're talking the NBA level.
how bad do you think oso hurt his draft stock? i'm not going to pretend to know anything about the nba draft.
can't remember a star player ending his career at MU so poorly. every single game in the NCAA he was terrible

LOL. MU basketball message board tough guy, huh? "Bitching on the internet," unheard of for fans to bitch after their team's latest choke in a long history of chokes, right?
Again, sounds like you're fine with a S16 appearance. That's cute. Some expect more and don't want to settle.
You bought a Sweet 16 tshirt, didn't you?
I didn't buy a sweet 16 shirt but I had us losing to Houston in the next round. Guess that makes me a bad fan who "settles" or something. Or, it makes me a realistic person who doesn't rely on 19-21 year old kids playing a game for my sense of self worth.
But you have higher expectations which is great! Get yourself all worked up and pissed off about it. Who cares?

Whatever happened, it started the last two(?) games of the regular season, not just the Tourney.
If the NBA finds out there was a legit mitigating and temporary circumstance that caused the poor play (i.e. injury), then he'll be drafted. That is my hope. As Muggsy pointed out, he isn't elite at anything so he doesn't have the luxury of having a bad month.
Anyway, the NBA will figure it out.

. He cost himself a lot of money by playing so soft and almost as though he was afraid of the physical side of the game.
