Kalkbrenner won DPOY. I am outraged.
Trash
It's a traveshamockery.
Not surprising, but still disappointing.
Complete Garbage.
Should have been Stevie or Carter.
Kalkbrenner is a joke.
Voters love shot blocking stats. Not surprising, even though disappointing.
Most overrated player in the Big East.
Let's remember who votes for these awards and the all-conference teams: coaches. They don't take deep analytical looks before checking the boxes.
Alexander not 1st-team All-BE, Kam not even honorable mention after being 2nd-team last season, picking an underserving Kalk again ... ugh.
Stevie was robbed of Defensive Player of the Year.
Kam was robbed of All Conference.
Oso should feel robbed of 1st Team All Conference with no Forwards listed.
Kolek should feel robbed of Player of the Year when he doesn't win it.
Gotta be honest...I LOVE where we are at. Get healthy. Play with a chip on the shoulder. Let's win a Natty.
It's gonna be a big chip now.

How do we know what the coaches look at before checking the boxes? You
may be right, but...
It will never happen, but I would love to see how the BE players rather than the coaches voted with the only rules that you could not vote for yourself (I know-obvious) or a teammate.
I mean if you want a big, I'd take Oso as a defender 10 times out of 10 over Kalk and not even think about it.
I would trust the coaches more since they are game planning for these guys. I would think they'd be some of the better ones at going beyond the stats.
Please enjoy these clips of Marquette guys scoring on Kalkbrenner:

I was just having some fun, since the coaches' voting seem to have triggered a lot of people. And I agree- it is really difficult to understand some of their votes.
So silly, just change the award to whoever blocked the most shots.
This isn't even a Stevie gripe for me, Carter was the DPoY in my opinion.

If there was an award for acting/drama, Carter wins hands down. Some of his attempts to sell a foul call to the refs were hilarious. I especially appreciated the shocked looks on his face when the refs basically said "nice try, but no cigar". ;D

Carter has a legit case. Kalk is tall.
If you guys read the game threads, Willie made it abundantly clear that Mitchell is not any good on defense and he's been watching Marquette basketball for 70 years

Yes......Clingon changed our shots and made us think twice about driving the lane and shooting over him.
Jop dunks on Kalkbrenner.
Softest big man in the BEast and it's not even close.
Pray we get to play Creighton again and watch the real DPOTY sit on his thighs preventing him from receiving the entry pass.
Certain to be an NBA 1st round bust but a nice freak show career in some Euro or Asian league where no one has actually seen a 7 footer.

Clingan is much more intimidating on D than Kalk. Though Clingan and Stevie both missed several big east games this year which worked against them I think. Injuries also take Tyler out of the race for POY.
Stevie > Oso > Clingan > Kalkbrenner
Put Devin Carter wherever you want between Stevie and Kalk.
I would have voted for Clingan.......but nobody got robbed.
Coaches are certainly more objective and watch a lot more film on these guys then anyone else.

So true. Excellent post.
Coaches must like robbing people three years in a row.. For those advanced stats nerds, what do the advanced stats say?
They say Kalkbrenner is a kitten.
I mean, from my eye test I consider Clingan to be the best defender in the Big East. But I hear all the minutes played talk and I'm sympathetic to that. I think the Best defensive year was had by stevie in the Big East, POTY should be Carter because I like fun stories and Carter's herculean 2024 effort deserves the award, even if I don't personally like him very much. But I ain't the coaches

Tough to use this stat when it says we're better with Stevie off the court. So much context that gets left out with on/off splits.
I struggle to recall a more overrated Big East player than Ryan Kalkbrenner.

I was so close to mentioning him as one contender in that same post ;D

Powell wasn't even the best player on his own team when he won his award. Was absolutely crazy.
I wonder what these discussions sound like in the other fan threads. Even UNCONN with their deserved acknowlegements probably have fan complaints. I know there's a board out there that even has Kolek being over-rated and inconsistent....and maybe should have been Team2 for their guy. Not saying that but I can hear it.
I know Mr. Mitchell needs some type of recognition. I'm sure there are other great students in the big east but maybe Student Athlete of the year.
Kam is the real deal we know. But lots of good guards and a case could be made for-and-against many of them. So it goes...

That would be scoop, particularly the game chat. The whole team is a disaster and will be even worse in the future, if that is to be believed.
Though I support a scoopers right to mourn victory in the way they see fit.
