Title: Must Win In March
Post by: bradforster on March 01, 2024, 09:57:52 PM
Earlier today, The Field of 68 discussed teams with the most pressure to produce in this year's tournament.  Here's John Fanta's vote:

They do play like an NBA team. Time to win in March.

Fanta is correct.  It's been WAY too long since MU made the S16

They have as much pressure as any team other than ( maybe) Purdue

Who is putting this "pressure" on Marquette/Shaka?

Would even a first-round loss to this year's version of Vermont result in any serious calls that Shaka be fired? Were there any legit calls for Painter's job after Purdue lost to Fairleigh Dickinson last year?

Now, pressure within the team to excel ... absolutely. They are competitors and they desperately want to win, so they almost surely will be putting some pressure on themselves even if they try to avoid doing so.

But usually, the "pressure" Fanta seems to be talking about is a blogosphere fabrication.

...considering the majority opinion is we have two future nba draft picks in the starting five (possibly 3 w/Kam) and a future nba baller in BG off the bench, yes, it's definitely win time.

If we lose in the first round this year it will have been the most disappointing end to a Marquette season in a long long time.

No one is getting fired, but he didn't suggest that.

When you have a team that is ranked in the top 10 all year, anything less than a s16 game is a let down.

I agree a first round loss would be extremely tough for me. Probably have to go to 1978 to have a worse ending. That said, I'm all in and do not anticipate a first weekend loss, with or without TK.

This was the most anticipated season for me in over 40 years and it is time to win. The last two months were great, but it was the preseason for me. Once they delivered in the NC, it was one goal and that was not winning the BE.

Sorry Goose. 1978 was a disaster!

Unless we have a loss that puts us in a 45 year tailspin, nothing will be as distressing as the Miami of Ohio loss.

13 years was Shaka Smart, which has nothing to do with Wojo.
Marquette has not been there for 11 years, which is on Wojo.

This isn't a one shot deal. As long as Shaka is here, we will be in contention for runs in March. So if not this year, then next year is the correct answer.

Good one. Total burn.  Those longhorn fans were full of optimism after running Barnes out of town.  Whatever happened to that bum anyway?

That "pressure" all comes from people who don't matter.

Again, who is under pressure and from whom is the pressure coming?

I guess I could accept the pressure from within. Putting pressure on themselves. But that's not what Fanta was saying. His take was dopey.

There is pressure on this team to win in Match this season. The buildup for the tournament has been going on for months and for obvious reasons. I think Shaka knows how big getting to the second weekend would be for him, the team and the program.

Now, this is simply pressure for getting a goal accomplished and nothing more. While I wouod be disappointed with an early loss, I would remain firmly on the Shaka bandwagon.
