With virtually every team having played 4 or 5 games, I'm wondering who might be in consideration for PoY in the conference. Though Kolek was the pre-season PoY, I doubt he would win it as of now (I don't mean to say that he can't or won't once the full season is played). But who? Clingan is out for a chunk of time and Hopkins is out for the season. Baylor Scheierman? Kadary Richardson? Devin Carter? Joel Soriano?
I really don't see any one player standing out in the crowd.
What say you all?
Conf only prob trey
For now, Joel Soriano.

Feels like a best player on the best team kinda year.
Right now Soriano and Richmond have the edge because they are unexpectedly at the top.
If Marquette steps up and wins the league probably Kolek.
If UConn steps up and wins the league maybe Newton.
If Villanova wins the league, Eric Dixon.
If Creighton wins the league, Baylor Scheierman.
If Providence wins the league, Devin Carter.
I would be pretty surprised if it was someone outside of those 7 names.

Pomeroy agrees.
Which caused me to notice that George Mason had a hella team in the making with Xavier Johnson (Mullins will be a hot coach), Oduro, Jordan Miller and Tyler.

If they can get ONE Big East win I'll be mildly surprised. Vs Georgetown is their best bet. Vs SHU is the only other game in which they are single digit dogs, but that upset would really surprise me.
Has a BE team ever gone winless in league? 0.200 in 15 games is certainly something for a major conference team.
Edit: yes 2022 Georgetown. But at least they won 6 games that year. Edit 2: Also 2009 DePaul. But again, won 9 games that year.

I heard they would get rid of Awards within the Conference for the 2023-24 season in this scenario.

Bump.
Devin Carter has certainly stepped up, and Newton should be in the running. But, I think Tyler is absolutely in the running. Are there any big men that are in the running?
Oso is playing the best.

His play has been amazing. It might get him drafted. But I don't think it will get him BEast POY; he's not flashy enough. Even if he might deserve it.
I should have said 'Oso is playing the best among the bigs' in answer to your question. I do not thing he is BEPOY.

Uconn as a team deserves every accolade right now as the clear team to beat
But its hilarious how many BE only or AA as a whole ballots I see that have Newton over Kolek.
I guess if you want a guy who shoots worse from all over the floor with a much worse A/TO ratio hes your guy.
I remember when Jae was chosen. There were other "names" being thrown around. But his choice was just so right! He excelled across the board.
Just watched the Tyler post-game press conference...re POY "I'm going after it again. That's all I've got to say."
Bring it on.

Yea literally the only thing he does better than Kolek, statistically, is rebound. His far less efficient, he's far less of a distributor, and I'd argue that he's not even the best offensive player on his team, he just shoots the most.

Oh hes definitely not. Karaban and Spencer are both excellent offensively and while not as athletic they are far from just catch and shoot.
And Newton isnt some defensive savant like Carter to give him an edge either.

Thanks for the clarification, and I agree. I think that folks thought that Clingan, Soriano or Kalkbrenner would be the best big in the conference, and possibly compete for POY. They are still all beasts, but Oso bests those beasts as the best big in the BEast.
I'm now wondering if Saturday's game, with Kolek and Newton playing each (not necessarily matching up, just on opposing teams) might play out similarly to 2012, when MU played WVU near the end of the regular session. Jae Crowder totally outplayed Kevin Jones and went on to win BEast POY.
Do it, Tyler, do it!

IIRC DJO was also in consideration.
Kolek or Newton. If PC finishes in the Wednesday bracket it will be difficult to elevate Carter as a result.
Newton winning would be a travesty
Kolek should repeat for what he means to the team and what he has done for the team. But in todays age where everybody gets a trophy, they will likely give it to somebody else.

Objectively I'd saw Newton in a 51-49 type decision over TK right now. Hope to have a different answer 54 hours from now.

How is that objective??
He's been closer to objectively poor in BE play than POY.
Dude might not even finish the year with a 40% FG
Listened to the Dauster/TO/Fanta podcast and noted UConn fan Rob Dauster said right now it's Kolek and it's not particularly close. He said that he trolls Marquette fans by posting pics of Newton whenever the best PG conversation comes up, but that Kolek is just on another level. I tend to agree with him.

Newton was very good in November/December. He's been fine in January/February. It's Big East PoY.
In a normal world this isn't even a conversation. But MU has already had a back-to-back stolen. History repeats.
Didn't stop Powell from winning it a few years back.
TK deserves it, but Kolek fatigue among voters could give it to Newton.
Honestly, I would put Spencer and Carter above Newton.

Just happened to see national defensive player of the year final 15 watch list.
Carter yes, Stevie no.
Kalkbrenner yes, Oso no.

Kalk is one of the most overrated players in a while.

Agree x2
One thing I'm certain of having seen both play a lot this season - including every second Oso has been on the court - is that Oso is a much better defender than Kalkbrenner.
Tough to overcome an overrated player's reputation.
Last year stuff like that would have annoyed me more. I hope Oso uses it as bulletin board material but I have a similar sentiment as some other posters here, it's all about the tourney run this year. Individual accolades are in the back seat. But Oso, if you're reading this, the 1st round 14th pick averages a 3/year 10MM rookie contract, worth quite a bit more than bragging rights over creighton.
So pumped for Saturday, even talked myself into being cautiously optimistic. But in reality, it's just awesome to be in this position in the home stretch of the regular season. Please stay healthy.

Kalk used to be a truly elite defender. He has not been the same since his illness last season. I've honestly wondered if there's something physically wrong still

Agreed.
After todays game, I guess Newton is frontrunner.
Kolek: 2 for 11, 1 for 4 from three, 2 assists, 3 rebounds, 4 turnovers, 7 points.
Newton: 5 for 10, 3 for 7 from three, 8 assists, 8 rebounds, 3 turnovers, 15 points.
Six games to go, maybe Kolek can start another five game super run.

I have no medical training whatsoever, but having had mono a year ago, I have read up on it via Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic sites after seeming to have a relapse. I learned that it is usually is a one time illness but sometimes it returns to some degree and sometimes (I believe rarely) it is chronic. My admittedly self-diagnosis is that I think it came back to visit once since I had it. The symptoms were similar but not as drastic. A blood test showing the presence of the Barr-Epstein virus is typically what is used for a proper diagnosis. I didn't bother getting retested by my doctor and it went away fairly quickly.
Kolek can't win if Marquette doesn't win the BE, and that's impossible now.
Hopefully he carries a chip, or hopefully he just realizes he played like dung for the world to see again, just like last NCAAt, and steps up when it mattas this year.
Let's hit up the mental strength coach until 3/21
